DTS issues

I know what you are saying...someone else with a DTS issue.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated

I have a Onkyo 797 reciever with a RCA dvd upscaler, both support DTS. The dvd player is hooked to my hd tv via hdmi, i used a digital coax from the dvd player to the reciever. I made sure the correct port on the reciever was set to pull from the dvd player and set it to auto and also tried dts format. I changed the menu on the dvd player to turn audio off from the hdmi output and pull audio from the digital coax output. However, when I select DTS from a dvd menu, still no sound. Can hdmi and digital coax be used in conjuction or do I need to use the digital coax in conjuction with component cables for video.

What would happen if I get rid of the digital coax and set the hdmi to do both video and audio (turn the hdmi audio back on in the dvd player settings) and use the digital optical out on the tv back to the reciever. Is this true DTS? Is the tv just acting like a passthough for audio in this case? Thanks for any help.

My guess is the with the hdmi connected there is no coax audio.

Easy to test, remove the hdmi and see if you have the dts stream.

HDMI and digital coax can be used together; right now I have my system set up exactly the same way, with an Onkyo 595 receiver and Oppo 981 DVD player. What kind of DVD player do you have? It might help to figure out what settings you probably need to change on the DVD player.

I don't think using the TV as a passthrough would work, because of the copy-protection built into HDMI.

Well, some TVs do allow passthrough of audio, so that is theoretically possible.

Are there separate Dolby and DTS settings in the player? It may just be turned off.

I went and bought a sony upscaler and took the rca back, worked first time. I forgot how good DTS sounds. Anyway, thanks for the replies.
