I'll be checking into this thread to see how things go. My roommate is re-doing the living room and got the 46" Sammy LN-T4665F LCD and the Oppo 980H. The Oppo is already here, via Amazon also, and the TV arrives today.

Yes, excitement abounds.

Sorry about that! It looks gorgeous, but I've been too busy between work, house guests, and just enjoying it. I'll get some pix and a review up this weekend.

What does an Oppo have that a HD DVD player doesn't? It seems like they are floating around the same price now and HD DVD has what I've heard as being great upconverting.

Don't the Oppo's play DVDs from different regions, and do PAL-2-NTSC conversion? These are 2 things that neither HD DVD or Blu-ray players will do.

'zackly Patman. I have a number of DVDs from other regions, as well as a few DIVX discs. My trusty old Philips DVP-642/37 played them all, and now the Oppo 980H does too. I will be picking up an HD player sometime next year, though.

I just bought the Samsung 6187S from Best Buy. They price matched Circuit City's special this week internet price of $1999.99. A little more than on Amazon and I have to pay sales tax and delivery but I feel a lot better getting it locally. But it's made up for because I get Reward Zone points and 18 months no interest (yes, it will definitely be paid off before the deadline). I also got 12% off a very nice 63" wide stand that should hold all my components. I'm just a little concerned about where I'm going to put the center speaker.

First pix!

These were taken with my antique Fujifilm FinePix 4800Z digital camera, so please excuse the PQ.

SD picture - G4TV SD - Comcast HD STB upconverting 480i to 1080i - component cables

HD picture - OnDemand HD - Comcast HD STB upconverting 720p to 1080i - component cables

I'll get more samples and a review up soon.

Very cool. I'm in the middle of convincing myself to buy the HLT5687SAX right now ($1674.99 at Amazon). This thread is helping me out. I do need a new DVD player as well. Are the Oppos the best? I don't really have any international or PAL discs, but I have a crap load of concerts on DVD-R and DVD-DL that I would like to know if it will play them.

How far away should the couch be from a 56" tv?

I just got my Samsung 6187S LED DLP TV delivered yesterday evening (it was supposed to have been delivered last week but there were "complications"). It was cold from being on the truck all day and I was advised to not turn it on for a few hours because of possible condensation going from the cold to being warm. So I waited until today to set it up.

I got all the connections made and I am very impressed. I love this thing. And I don't even have HD cable or satellite and I don't have an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player or an HD TiVo. Everything's just standard. But even that is impressive.

So I'm thinking of getting Charter HD. I know people will recommend I get satellite but I've got a Charter package with cable, high-speed internet and phone that's been very reliable since an internet problem was solved about six months ago that's a pretty good deal and I don't want to give it up.

I first thought I would get the 56" too but finally decided on the 61". I'm glad I did. It's not that much more expensive and I can easily sit back a few more feet if I have to. I know if I had gotten the 56" I'd have been sorry.

AGuyNamedMike,,

Great set!

You're making me regret my 50" already!

The furniture we have in our living room will barely accommodate the 56", so that's going to be enough. Plus, we can't push our couch back any further.

This is also kind of an in-betweener for me until I buy a house.
