Subwoofer in the basement?

I am getting a new DLP Tv this week, and the corner space behind my old RPTV/Component stand is going to be reduced.

I don't really have another great spot in the room for my sub, so I was thinking about putting it in the basement under the seating area. It would be adjacent to a concrete wall, with a normal interior wall forming the other side of the corner.

I know I would have to turn the level up, but is this doable?

Subwoofers get their "kick" primarily by moving air. In order for the sub to be effective you would need to cut a vent or somehow allow the sound waves/air to move in the upstairs space. An alternative that may help augment the lower frequencies would be a Buttkicker LFE, they work by attaching to chairs/sofas and providing a tactile response that simulates low frequecies punch.

I would say no, this will not work. LFE is both heard and felt. Can you move it to another corner?

The thing is, there is a doorway on each side of the corner where the TV is located.
I will try to come up with another option, but I was just wondering about the basement, since LFE is omni-directional.

I could pull out the stand a bit and still put it behind the system, but with my old set-up there were occasional tones that would resonante with the back of the TV, causing a buzzing noise.

What are the dimensions you are talking about? Sub size and space size.

The sub is a Sony SAWM40, which I believe is a 12" powered sub.

The room is proabably 15'X20'.

Seating is at the back (call it West) under the windows. The West wall as a span of windows in the center.
The North wall has a fire place in the center.
The East wall has a wide opening into another room in the center.
The South wall has a wide opening near the SE corner.

I plan of putting the TV/stand in the SE corner. The old sub position was beind the set in the SE corner, and there is less room available new.

EDIT: Here is the old picture from when I got my last TV. (I believe it is to scale.

Which was from this thread:

I put it in the corner between A&B. The difference now is before I had a component rack next to the TV, now the components will be under the TV, so the whole thing sits further into the corner (which I like)

I was just thinking that a round sub might fit better if you are putting it behind the TV in a corner. Hsu Research and SVS make subs like that.

Hell, hanging it from the ceiling would be better than sticking it in the basement.

I will just shove it in some corner of the room.
I just figured that directly below the seating area would suffice.
I don't want to by a new sub, since this one is doing quite well for $100.
I was just trying to be lazy and not run coax around a doorway.
I wish the living room was set up better, but I know what to look for in my next house.

Shove the wire under the floor, not the sub.

There was alread a hole in the corner, I just didn't want to drill another large hole in the floor to fit an RCA plug through.

I am going to angle it behind the set-up and see how it works. Otherwise I may move it to the other side of the wall, or in spot 'A', although it is in plain view and not in a corner.
