Crossover setting without a sub?

I'm running the Fluance SX-HTB powered by an Onkyo SR502 - for now I don't have a sub.

What crossover setting should i be using?

I guess the best answer is whichever sounds best, but the results are a bit different from different sources and the speakers are still breaking in a bit (about 15hrs old) so i'm undecided which sounds best in general.

Right now I have it at 120 (default is 100.) The range is 60-150.

According to Fluance, the speaker specs are as follows...

Center channel speaker 2-way 80 - 20000 Hz 8 Ohm
Right/left channel speaker 2-way 49 - 20000 Hz 8 Ohm
Right/left rear channel speaker 2-way 80 - 20000 Hz 8 Ohm

Just going by these numbers, I would probably set it somewhere in the 80-100 range to being. Then, as you said, play with it from there to see what sounds best.

I'm confused. If you set the receiver for "subwoofer=no," the crossover setting should be irrelevant.

If you set it for "subwoofer=yes" then all the LFE information will be filtered out.

Crossover settings determine what bass information from the 5 main channels should be sent to the sub. If you don't have a sub, there should be no crossover setting.

Rich, when you have no sub you can set the fronts to Large and the other channels are crossed over and sent to the fronts, which can theoretically handle the bass better. Obviously depends on your speakers, though.

I would guess 100 would be the best with those speaker specs. Maybe even 80. I always like just above the low rating of the speaker to make sure there isn't a dip in any frequency. Before I took everything apart at my house, my fronts were crossed over at 50Hz and they are rated down to 38. It was perfect with the sub.

Way off topic

Interesting photos you have there. This one made me laugh. Did you just come up with that or did you plan it out?

With the SR502 if you set the subwoofer to no the fronts default to large anyway, and you can still change the crossover frequency. I'm still a bit unclear on the crossover setting effect if i have no sub though? Although it clearly does something as i can tell a difference in base as i change it. I'll try switching between 80-120 while looping some music.

Spiky, as for the pic, it wasn't planed out, just happened to see it that way and took the shot

It moves the bass from any speakers set to Small to the front speakers. If those specs are the correct ones, your fronts can do 50Hz reasonably, while all your other speakers taper off after 80Hz. So if you want the bass from those channels from 50-80Hz, the front speakers will have to handle it. It should also be sending the LFE channel to your front speakers with the sub turned Off.
