Hooking up 2 DVD players to reciever unit help??

Ok..i have a Sony HT-1700 which is a DVD player and reciever and stuff. i have the sony dvd player hooked to the reciever via digital coaxial from player to reciever and then component from player to Sony TV. Thus I have to switch TV to input 4 (DVD) and turn reciever to DVD/LD option.
Now, I want to hook up another Philips DVD player to the reciever. The reciever's DVD/LD vid in and aud in composite are free on any hook ups. Can I simply hook up the 2nd player to the reciever's connection here and still use the DVD/LD option? But then I think what will the TV input be on, there will be no connection from the 2nd player to the TV will there? This is so confusing. Can anyone help?? I would so appreciate. Thanks in advance.

You do not need to make another connection from the receiver to the TV.

The signal would still be on input 4 under your scenario. You would use the receiver to switch between sources. This is not uncommon with multiple sources.

Good luck.

I'm confused by your post, so correct me if I'm wrong.

You have your Sony DVD player's video signal running straight to the TV, without using your surround receiver's video switching capabilities. You have the Sony DVD player's audio connection running to the receiver. The receiver itself is not connected to the TV set in any way.

You want to connect the Philips DVD player's video and audio outputs to the surround sound receiver.

You're right, the Philips DVD player's video signal would not be getting to the TV, unless you connect the receiver's composite video output jack to the TV. If you do it that way, you will have to change the TV to whichever input you connect that video signal to.

Somewhere along the line you are making this way more complicated than it has to be.

OK, looking over specs on your receiver, I see it does not have component video inputs, so you won't be using it for video switching. It also only has one digital audio input on the back panel (there is an optical input on the front which you should use with the Philips if you don't mind having a cable running to the front of the receiver).

Here is my recommendation for connecting your components:

Sony DVD player: Coaxial digital audio to receiver, component video directly to TV.

Philips DVD player: Optical digital audio cable to front receiver input (or if you don't want to do that, stereo analog audio cables to back of receiver), S-video cable directly to TV.
