External DTS Decoder

Do they make these things anymore? Is it possible to get one cheaply?

Is it even possible? I have a DD 5.1 decoder receiver, but no DTS. So is there a gizmo I can hookup to it to allow it to read and blast out DTS?

I don't know if these are still available or not, but if I remember correctly outboard decoders were fairly expensive for what you got. You'd probably be better off buying a new DVD player that had a built-in DTS decoder.

My DVD player has DTS decoding (Panasonic RV31), but my receiver (RCA RT2350) does not.

Does your receiver have 5.1 inputs?

According to the manual for the RV31, it doesn't have either a DD or DTS decoder.

As Nike wrote, your player is capabable of outputting a DTS data stream, not decoding it. You'll have to find a player that actually decodes, then outputs the decoded signal through six RCA-type cables to the 5.1 analog inputs on your receiver.

Again, this is likely cheaper than buying a stand-alone decoder.

Ahhh, I see. I wasn't aware that outputting a stream and decoding it were separate things.

Sounds like the best option would be to upgrade my receiver at some point? If I had a receiver with DD and DTS decoding, my DVD's decoding ability would be a moot point?

You are correct. Only either the receiver or the dvd player needs to have a decoder but need to have the appropriate inputs/outputs.

Most people prefer to have the decoding done by the receiver.
