That's the same player I have. Haven't had a problem with it yet. Plays MP3 cds great, DVDs great, VCDs great, doesn't support SVCD though.

Doesn't bother me, so maybe it won't bother you either.

Sounds like a nice player. Price is a bit steep. If you dont have an HDTV then you dont need all these features, especially progressive.

I also dont like the big bulky remote.

But if you have a Television capable of progressive scan 480P, then go for it.

the question for me would be, does it read errors better than other players in that price-line? with dvd quality goin' to the doghouse, a player that reads errors better than most would be essential to me. I'd happily pay 600 or higher if one like this existed. I have to admit though, this does look like a decent player. get the extended warrenty and enjoy! if it does it's job...I dont think the price is that steep at all.

there is a MORE expensive Panasonic DVD player

it also has progressive scan. But can PROGRESSIVE SCAN be better?

I mean like how can it get better?

The price isn't bad. the main question was Is the DVD player better than AVERAGE dvd players out there? (like the ones ya get at wal mart and such)

Progressive scanning is a lot better than Interlaced scanning. Progressive is used with the high end DTV, so if you dont have one... then you cant use Progressive. Progressive makes a huge difference in quality if the originating format is film transfered to dvd.

All video is composed of lines of resolution.

Interlaced Scanning: scans every other horizontal line to make up a field. 2 fields per frame.

Progressive Scanning: progressive scans all horizontal lines from top to bottom. It scans twice as fast as interlaced, so there are no fields because progressive can draw a frame in the time interlaced draws one field.

It is very complex to understand so check this link out of more info and examples:

But to answer your main question... yes it is better than cheap garbage players from Walmart. I think any NAME brand is better than a walmart dvd player.

But there are some really nice players from Toshiba and Pioneer that you can get for $150 - $200.

man, I just found out my older sony player(from 99), has 2,597 hours played. I only have 92 hours music played. I adjusted my optical tracking by remote and all is improved. this is what sony charges 100 bucks to do? amazing.

This player is $129.99 right now at Best Buy

http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=...at=32&scat=244

just add it into your cart to have it drop from $179 to $129

It is a great player which I happen to own.

it's one of the best deinterlacers available (esp for video-based material)

This is good, but I do not believe that this player has this. You should look at the RP-82 (if you can find one), or the much easier to find CP-72. The 72 goes for about $230 plus has a $30 rebate. The PQ and chipset are the same as the much praised RP-82, which is considered to be one of the best players under $500, plus you get DVD-A and 5-disc changing.
