If I'm playing a Dolby 2.0 Surround track, what audio setting should I use on my receiver?
On my Onkyo SR-600 receiver I have the following options:
- Dolby D Mode
- Dolby Pro Logic II Mode
- Direct Mode (this is the the left and right front speakers though, and no sub, according to my manual)
- Stereo Mode (uses ledt and right fronts, and the sub)
- All Channel Stereo

By definition, wouldn't you use the Direct Mode, since 2.0 is 2 speakers, no sub?

My receiver just reads whatever signal is coming in and plays it accordingly. Since DD 2.0 is still a surround sound soundtrack, I would say Pro Logic is the way to go. It sounds as though Direct Mode may not use the surrounds.

Personally, I usually switch over to stereo for DD 2.0 movies.

The question specifies Dolby Digital 2.0 surround. That is not "two speakers" or "stereo". That format uses all 5 speakers. I suggest Dolby Pro-Logic 2 mode. That's what you got it for. Regular pro-logic (which is what DD 2.0 Surround is) has left and right channels and matrixes in a center channel and a reduced bandwidth mono surround channel for your 2 rear speakers. DPL2 transforms it into full bandwidth stereo surround channels. Bass management brings in the sub so now your DD 2.0 Surround track(and even plain old 2 channel stereo) is now 5.1. Why on earth would someone with DPL2 play a DD surround track on only 2 speakers? I seriously hope you guys aren't reading the back of the DVD package and switching to 2 speakers because it says 2.0.
If you don't like the regular 2 channel stuff (like CDs or LPs) extrapolated to all 5.1 speakers you can listen to them in stereo (like audiophiles do) but Surround is intended to be listened to with rear speakers, so why not use DPL2?
