*Beginner's Question*: Component Connections
I recently purchased a new DVD player from Cruthfield.com and with my order I receieved a free a/v hook up guide that shows all the different connections and setups. I'm interested in learning how to hook up my DVD player to a reciever and then to my t.v. with a component video connection. All three of these units have component/DVD hookup capabilities. I was looking at how to hook them up in the guide and was confused about something. There is a Y, PB, and PR three wire connection from the DVD player to the reciever and then a digital in and out connection from the DVD player to the receiver. From the receiever there is only a three wire Component Video Y, PB, and PR connection to the T.V. My understanding was that the sound traveled through the digital in/out connection. How is it that sound travels from the reciever to the T.V.? Does it travel through the component Video connections? So I guess my question is does the sound signal travel from the receiver to the t.v. through the component video 3 wire connection? Any help would be appreciated.

the component video cable (3 cables: Y, Pb, and Pr) carry only a video signal. Unless you specifically hook up analog audio outputs from your DVD player to your TV (which really isn't necessary), you won't have any audio signal from the DVD to the TV. Instead, all of your audio is getting processed by your receiver to play through your home theater speakers.
The digital in/out is the audio connection between your DVD deck and your receiver.
Hopefully that helps.

The problem is that I don't have any speakers yet and was wanting to use my television speakers for the time being and wanted to use a component video connection for the best picture possible. Any suggestions?

Use the analog red and white audio connections between the player and the tv.
Make sure that you check your dvd player's setup menu to enable the analog (PCM) audio outputs, in case they aren't enabled by default.
I'd be surprised if the Crutchfield guide didn't address this.
