The Onkyo TX-DS797 has everything anyone could want. Available as low as $799.
Component (three cables for video, not to be confused with composite) is the best connection. The Onkyo 797 will do component switching. S-Video is also quite good. Check what your TV will accept and use the best possible connection.

i agree with skar on the Onkyo recommendation.
You might also want to look at the Marantz SR-8000 (you may well still be able to find one on closeout...it was originally $1200)
Failing that, check out the Marantz SR-7002 or -8002.
also, some of the Denon models are nice.
For DVD hookup, I'm a fan of component video.

DENON 3802---you cannot go wrong here
7 amplified channels, 6.1 processing, and boy does it have some raw power.
I got mine for $800 shipped from www.6ave.com
you have to call and talk to a salesman to get the deal. If you order from the webpage its $1200.
good luck
