Stand-alone dts decoder help
Anyone here have a philips dvd825at dvd player?
I am wondering if there are any cheap dts/dd5.1 decoders out there to supplement a receiver I have. I don't want to waste money just to get a dts/dd5.1 receiver. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do?

The cheapest/best solution would be the Technics SH-AC500D dolby digital/DTS surround processor. I own one and for the most part am happy with it. My one gripe is the DTS seems to be an after thought on the unit.
Dolby sources are automatically switched between Pro-logic or Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, but Dts must be manually selected via remote/front panel. Another thing to note is that there is no bass management for Dts.
There really aren't any cost effective alternatives out there. Consdering you can buy a new receiver with boy DD and Dts for around $200, I doubt you'll find another decoder on the market that's worth considering.
I've seen it sold new for about $200 at several online stores, and it can be had for about $100 on ebay.

also, i think there are Sony ES, Onkyo, and Denon models. finding them could be tough, though.
Chances are, though, that the Technics will be the most wallet friendly.

Check out the Millenium DTS decoder. An older unit but it should do everything you are looking for.

This link gives you details on the unit at $399. This unit has gotten good marks when it first came out a few years ago, but is overpriced compared to the prices of today's receivers.
Go to this link, the order form, and you can purchase the 400 dollar unit described above for only 200 dollars, except it is silver in color, not black.

Unless you have a really nice 5.1 ready receiver, it probably makes sense to buy a new receiver if you plan on plunking down 200 bucks or more. Good luck in your search.
