Wega: Loud noise when turn it on

I just got my Wega 36 and when I turn it on, there is a momentary loud noise from the unit (not from the speakers). Is this usual? Has anyone else experienced this?

It is the degauss cycle. Nothing to worry about

Yup most SONY TVs do this I think. The first wega i bought had a really loud noise, though, so I returned it back and got another one. This one doesn't quite make as loud a sound. The first one was so loud it would wake some people up in my house, in another room.

My son loves turning on the 20" one we have in the bedroom so he can here it go "BONK".

What exactly does degauss do anyway?

The degauss cycle removes any stray magnetism from the tube.
