I'm having a problem with my new bedroom television, which is a Samsung 20" TXK2067.

When I play a DVD, I notice a flickering at various times throughout the movie. It's very noticeable watching a widescreen movie because you see the black areas at the top and bottom go light, dark, light, dark. It's of course very annoying.

I've tried hooking up a different DVD player that I know has no problem and it still happens. I tried different cables and used all the various inputs and outputs. I tried plugging the television into a different outlet. So I'm fairly certain it's the television. I don't really notice it when watching cable, although that might be because it's full screen and it's much more obvious in the black areas on a widescreen movie.

Has anybody ever had this problem or does anyone have any ideas about the cause?

Let me guess: you routed the DVD player through a VCR.

to add ...if you did this, you are encountering macrovision, which is made to prevent you from running a DVD thru a VCR to keep from recording. Try puttin the DVD player right to your TV ,and see what happens

Thanks for your comments but that's not what I'm doing. I have it directly hooked up to the television via a good quality composite video cable. Yeah, I know, composite sucks, but a television that size only has that type of input.

Still, maybe the TV is prone to Macrovision. Is there maybe a setting like auto-brightness or something? Even try turning auto-color off. It sounds a lot like Macrovision -- maybe you should find a video that doesn't have Macrovision on it and see if you get the same problem.

Can you recommend a video that doesn't have Macrovision? I've also been searching the Net for a way to disable the Macrovision on this particular DVD player (Konka 1800U1) but it seems like nobody has found out how to do it yet. The previous model (1800U) apparently had a hack to disable the Macrovision.

I also thought about buying an S-Video to RCA adapter so that I could use an S-Video cable out of the DVD player but still connect it to the television's composite input. I could always return it to Radio Shack if it doesn't work.

I believe When We Were Kings, the Muhammed Ali documentary, doesn't have Macrovision. Also, Video Essentials shouldn't have Macrovision. I imagine you can rent either of these at the local video store.
