Picture quality of local stations on Direct T.V.?

I have a 56" Toshiba hdtv and recently added direct tv with an RCA DTC100 hdtv receiver. I have noticed that the picture quality on my local stations is very soft when I compare to my regular cable. I have tried to adjust the contrast on the t.v with minimal results. Is this the best picture I am going to get or is it something with the box or their signal?
