Re: NYC: new B&M DVD bargain store

I got the name wrong...that's a chain of New York and New England stores that just announced they're going out of business.

The one I was referring to was Entertainment Outlet, which has stores on W 40th and 14th St near 6th Av. Worth a look...a lot of 2 for $10 deals, but a lot of their stock was produced in Canada and has multi-language packaging if you're a stickler on that kind of stuff.

Hah. Yeah, I know Entertainment Outlet. Used to live in that joint when it was across the street. Some stuff in the used bins is $1.99. And I've never gotten anything remotely scratched.
Thanks for the correction--I was almost on my way over there.

Regarding Drew's. He is closing but he was on a month to month lease anyway as I understand it. The owner may be taking the building down. It and the entire corner parcel (the parking lot) were moving toward demolition/construction of a luxury condo project a few years back during the real estate boom. Then it stalled. Maybe the developer thinks its time to move ahead. Just what New York needs now - another luxury condo. Not.

According to the sign in the closed 8th Avenue store window, Drew's moved to 100 west 37th Street at Sixth Avenue at the beginning of March.

Anyone check this out, know it to be so?

I stopped by the Broadway (12th St.) location and saw a few new titles that some of you may be interested in picking up.
King Kong Animated Series- for reference, I think this is the boxset here. $5.99 or 2 (any $5.99 titles) for $10.
How The West Was Won: Ultimate Collector's Edition $9.99

Re: NYC: new B&M DVD bargain store

Update on titles seen at 12th St. and B'way (with examples from Amazon for full details):
The Kong Complete Animated series is indeed the one linked above but the price is $3.99/ 3 for $10.
Wacky Races, the complete series is $6.99
Batfink: The Complete Series is $5.99
Swamp Thing: The Series is $6.99
They've gotten in more BluRays at fair prices, but this one in particular caught my Hot Deal eye:
Woodstock: The Ultimate Edition was $7.99. Now, this price was for unsealed cases with 2 discs, without any extra printed materials, so I'm not sure if they may have opened the boxsets to sell the DVDs. The cover art did look like the link and not the earlier issue.

Walked by over the weekend and the store that was on Sixth Avenue between 20th and 21st is gone though the one at 12th and Broadway remains.

Re: NYC: new B&M DVD bargain store

Forgot to mention that they've opened a new location on Broadway (east side) near Waverly Place, or just south of Astor Place.

I hadn't been to the Union Square store in a couple of months before today, so I don't know how recent these are, but there's definitely some new stuff. They have all four volumes of VideoAsia's Spaghetti Western Bible for $5.99 each. Each set has 10 movies on 3 discs, and while the A/V quality supposedly varies a lot (according to Amazon reviews), it still seems like a good deal if you want these movies. I bought volumes 2 and 4. Link to the four sets at Amazon (they're the first four entries in the list):

Nice Grab on those SW Bibles. The Sartana set is awesome. And the a/v quality definitely varies a lot but every movie I've watched from the sets is certainly watchable.

Do you recommend volumes 1 and 3 as well? I wanted to buy two of them and chose 2 and 4 largely because they came with slipcovers and were factory-sealed, as opposed to 1 and 3, which came without slipcovers and looked re-sealed.

For others in the area - there are tons more of each volume left.

Also for $5.99, this 60's Sherlock Holmes set starring Peter Cushing and released (and restored?) by A&E:

And, for $6.99, Batfink: The Complete Series:

^ I wonder if they've changed the price of Batfink ^
My post earlier this week has this priced at $5.99. As stated previously they sometimes (rarely) have different price stickers on the same title in locations throughout the store.

I find that Entertainment Outlet also has some very good deals. Would any NYer here like to start a new thread devoted to hot deals at that store?
The other day I bought Invasion- The Complete Series and The Inner Sanctum Complete Movie Collection for $10 for the two, or $5.99 for one. Factory sealed, brand new.

Purchased the very same titles for the same price two months ago, plus used, sealed copies of 'The Tie That Binds' (1994,5?) and 'Roll Bounce' for .99 each. 'Invasion' is good stuff. Missed out on 'She Wolf of London' complete series set for $5.99, however, and when I went back a week ago, that sumbutch was $16.99. Oy!

1. I might be misremembering the price on Batfink.

2. You'll enjoy Invasion. My girlfriend and I just finished watching it recently. I also bought it at Entertainment Outlet, about 6 months ago. Be careful though - when I opened my copy, the cardboard case was badly mangled in a number of places. If you haven't opened your copy yet, you should, to make sure it's okay.

3. I no longer shop at Entertainment Outlet after an incident a few months ago where all of their copies of the Marlon Brando Franchise Collection were labeled $5.99 and the manager refused to sell it to me at that price, saying they were mislabeled. He just calmly started removing the labels from every copy and told me he wouldn't sell it to me. So, I don't shop there anymore.

Re: NYC: new B&M DVD bargain store

I bought that Brando Franchise Collection there as well as the Bing Crosby collection at 2/$10. I guess you got unlucky - I believe the 14th street location still has the Brando set listed as $5.99, or 2 for $10.

The Entertainment Outlet closed at the end of 2011.

Now the two $5.99 shops at Union Square , Broadway near 12th St.
and Broadway south of 8th St. both have signs that they are going out of business. Prices are not any lower. Signs say the prices marked are the final prices. Sorry to see them go. Perhaps they will pop up somewhere else in NYC.

I just stopped in the B'Way/12th St location a few days ago. They said they were moving across the street (by end of March?) and the Astor Place location a couple of blocks away appears to be staying open. None of this info is guaranteed tho!

Actually, only the Entertainment Outlet location on West 40th Street went out of business late last year. The location on 14th between 6th and 7th remains open (at least as of a couple of weeks back).

So are these locations going out of business or no? Anyone know?

The Union Square store did in fact move across the street and is now open for business in the new location.

Re: NYC: new B&M DVD bargain store

For NYC folks. Now the other shoe has dropped for Entertainment Outlet. The 40th Street location closed last winter. Went by the 14th Street store on Sunday and they have a big sign up - closing - last 10 days. The dvds that used to be 2 for 10 or 5.99 each are now 30% off the 5.99 or 4.19 each. The new dvds are 10 or 20% off the regular price so nothing special there. Used DVDs are 50% off the marked price. So no more Entertainment Outlet. The remaining $5.99 DVD shop on Broadway near the Strand Book Store would seem to have the NYC B&M discount DVD market to itself.

Re: NYC: new B&M DVD bargain store

It's been a while since there were any updates, so as a "tourist" who will be going to NY soon, are any of these places still open and have any new bargain DVD/BluRay stores opened up recently?

Mosskeeto 12-08-12 03:17 AM

Re: NYC: new B&M DVD bargain store

Their sole current location is at 814 Broadway, between 11th and 12th Streets. The location on B'way near Astor Place was the subject of an eviction order; they don't spend much on upgrading their stores prior to opening, so I'm not surprised that they disappear when the urge arises.
There is a shill (usually) out in front of their store handing out a business size card that announces their "Holiday Movie Sale!" With it you can buy any two $5.99 DVDs for $10.
The Entertainment Outlet on 14th St. has been shuttered for a while but another DVD store has opened nearby. It's on the south side of 14th St. between 6th and 7th Ave, however it's much closer to 6th Ave. <s>I haven't been inside so I can't discuss their selection or pricing</s>.
Checked out their prices the other day and they barely qualify as a discount store.

Re: NYC: new B&M DVD bargain store

Was at the Strand Bookstore on Tuesday and so for the first time in about six months checked out the remaining discount DVD store at 814 Bway and was disappointed with stock and prices. For example they had a number of the WB signature collection boxes that J&R recently was selling for $14.99 for the holidays but here at $24.99 each or more. On the other hand the Universal Bing Crosby set that's been around at discount for a while (along with similar sets for Marlon Brando and Rock Hudson) was $6.99. (But I picked the Crosby set at Entertainment Outlet at 2 for $10 about two years ago.) For a while about a year or so ago they had some used rental stock from a Canadian video chain (usually in good condition at 2 for $10 and with some interesting documentary and foreign titles mixed in if you looked carefully) Now the remaining titles seem to largely have been pushed to $9.99 each. So, I walked out without purchasing anything. YMMV.
