Looks like the universal monthly codes will be a thing of the past... Guess I'll have to pay the 10 cent charge for a text message on my cell phone now...(unless they are just trying to scare us into forking over our cell phone number and will still distribute a universal code?)

Here is the text from the email:

As a loyal redbox customer, we want to make sure you know about an upcoming change to our Monthly Movie Monday program. Beginning Monday, December 7, the Monthly Movie Monday promo code will be distributed exclusively via text message to customers signed up to the redbox SMS Network.

All codes will be unique and can only be redeemed once. If you get your code from a friend, online or in an email, the code will NOT work. The only way to guarantee your code is valid is to join the SMS Network at redbox.com.

For those with Stop & Shop locations (and/or other affiliated stores?)

Looks like this offer ends tomorrow 12/3/09, I just found it today. It's in this weeks S&S ad.
5 Free Redbox rentals when you buy $20 in participating Proctor & Gamble products at Stop & Shop.

I bought 2 packs of Bounty paper towels on sale for $9.99 and some fabric softener, and got a coupon printed out at checkout. It has 5 one-time use promo codes printed on it. The codes expire on 01/03/10.

While on the road during the holiday weekend, I stopped at a McDonald's for a quick bite. There were several advertisements for a free Redbox code with the purchase of a large value meal. I ordered one and discovered it's a code on the pull-off tab affixed to the large drink cups (similar to how codes were distributed some time back). I'm assuming this is a national promotion.

Non-sharable text code just received for the monthly Redbox Monday freebie. Will update if they change their mind and put out a redbox or twitter freebie, but they sounded pretty firm in that those are over.

I'm not sure if i can get text messages on my phone,I'm one of those people that is technology (ahh whats that word)...

Anyways some studios are really screwing with Redbox,still.Read the latest at the insider.

I couldn't get the first one to work earlier this evening. The 2nd one was good! And it can be used multiple times using different credit/debit cards.

Does Redbox carry Blu-Ray? If so, how do you find out if your local one does?

Redbox does carry Blu-rays, but currently only as trials at CA and FL. So unless you live in one of those two states you'll only be able to rent regular DVDs.

Their website does not mention the carrying of BDs at all, so if you live in CA or FL you would need to see what each machine carries...

ACME25 worked for me 12/30 and 12/31.
I always check Redboxinsiders at least twice a week.

Went to 5 different machines to try to return my 'free' rental last night and all said they were full and not accepting returns. I'm done w/ Redbox and the monthly free rental. Just like everyone else I had no way of contacting them last night to complain. This will be the last $1 they get from me.

I had the same problem at a Redbox at an HEB. Put the DVD back in the car, went into the store and bought some things. By the time I came out someone had rented a DVD and it accepted my return. First time this has happened.

Random, but why bother returning it to the car? I just carry the DVD around with me in the store, in my pocket or in the cart.

if i ever get that problem where the machine wont take returns, i will probably bite the bullet and rent one hopefully the machine will accept the return afterwards. just a thought.

That's an interesting idea. If you're gonna be paying an extra buck anyway, why not rent a different movie rather than pay twice for the same one? And if by taking a movie out of the machine you free up some space so you can return the first one, even better.

I agree with felcher's suggestion, but find it hard to believe that a machine could be COMPLETELY full. That must be some hecka low-traffic location where you're their only customer.
