Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Last day here was Sunday. TV seasons were $3, movies were $2, and movies sans cover art were $1. The clerk explained that corporate did request that certain titles (both new and old, with The Big Lebowski named) not be sold below a certain price point, which explains the selection to a degree. Any other stores have a ridiculous number of copies of The Kill Point (shrinkwrapped used copies from other stores like most of the TV seasons left were) for sale among the TV seasons?

Picked up:

Drink Drank Drunk
Blades of Glory
Jericho Season 1
Jericho Season 2

(Plus a CD of Def Leppard's first album for $2.40).

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Finally got over to the one near my store today. All movies were $5.99 and tv sets were $15.99. Supposedly, they're closing on the 15th but given how picked over they are, I'd suspect they won't make it through this week. Here's what I grabbed...

Cassandra's Dream
Elsewhere
Good Time Max
Henry II: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Small Town Folk

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Any updates on these?

There is one closing here in Plano, TX on Jupiter and 14th Avenue. They still had a lot of Blu Ray left. They are in categories of $6.99, $9.99, $12.99 and $16.99. As of right now, they are doing 15% off that price.

Still a lot of great titles. I picked up Ratatouille for $15.

Any other closings in the DFW area?

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Visited the store near me today (first BB I've visited that's part of this current round of closings) and didn't find much. DVD's were down to $7.99. BR discs were mostly $12.99 plus 15% off. They still had a few $3.99 sale movies, so I got "Giant" 2-disc and "The Fall" on Blu-Ray, which was priced at $6.99 plus 15% off.

After cleaning out the three closing Hollywood Videos near me of their OOP titles and Criterions, visiting a Blockbuster that's closing just reveals the disparity in stock quality between the chains.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Popped into a closing Blockbuster in a rather upscale neighborhood to check out their sales. They had been having their clearance sale for at least a week, if not more. All DVD's (new releases and catalog titles) were $5.99. Blu-Ray were all around $12.99 with an extra 15% off.

I picked up "Trick r' Treat," "The Duchess of Langeais" and "Big Fan" (an excellent film from the writer of "The Wrestler" and featuring an astonishing dramatic performance from comedian Patton Oswalt -- highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet). Doubt I'll stop back in as the rest of the stock was kind of meh.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

The Blockbuster in Sacramento under the freeway that's been there for a long time (before that it was one of the short-lived Flash Entertainment stores, which were REALLY cool) is finally giving it up. Went in for the first time in over a decade and got the South Park DVD trivia game for 5 bucks, and 2 used caseless HD-DVDs I didn't already have for $1.99 each. The only Blu-Rays they had were used, and since that's not a dead format I passed on them.

Standard new DVDs were 10% off, but prices will probably drop on those in the coming weeks. They had a ton of the Simpsons SceneIt games for $7.99, but I'll wait til those go down to $5. Looks like the sell-off is being done by Great American Group, the same fine folks who bought Tower Records just to kill it, and did most of the Circus City liquidation too.

We're almost nothing but freeways here. Which Blockbuster is this?

Are there any more closing you've seen? I haven't seen one close around here.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

The Niskayuna, NY store (located in the Mohawk Commons shopping center) is closing. As of Friday, the prices weren't so good... Everything was 61% off of $9.99 (~$4 each) except new releases which were $6 (unknown percentage). Their sales were more confusing than the Hollywood Video liquidation process, so I'm sure they are using a different liquidation company.

Now there is no place for locals to rent from besides Redbox, Netflix, and Blockbuster Online. The cashier at this particular store said she was tempted to buy up the entire inventory and start her own business, but I'm pretty sure she wasn't serious.

Near Alhambra Blvd, in the failed Sutter Square Galleria which literally is under the freeway. It opened in 1987 as a mall, the space where Blockbuster is being Flash Entertainment which was a neat store but didn't stay in business too long. Most of the other stores folded too so the place is now mostly offices. Wonder what the rent will be for Blockbuster's space when they leave?

The one near us in STL is open for another week or so and still only has their Blu Ray's for 15% off. The other previously viewed DVD's are 70%-80% off though.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

The Financial Times reports today that Blockbuster has made a deal with Fox, Sony & Warners to keep the DVD supply coming--by putting up their 450 Canadian stores as collateral. Universal and Paramount will continue supplying DVDs in the normal way. Hopefully this will help stabilize Blockbuster's financial situation. I would certainly miss them--for their used DVD sales--if they went under.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Just checked the one closing in York, PA, Blu-rays are STILL only 15% off, that hasn't changed since they started the going-out-of-business sale! One of the employees said the last day is going to be next Sunday, so I'll be there to check it out. Does anyone know what they'll do with the Blu-rays on the final day?

I just snagged Izo and The Spy Who Came In From the Cold for $8.

Sadly, I didn't realize the latter had a Criterion edition.

I believe 15% off is the final percentage off as I have never seen it change to anything else

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Prices were $3.90 for new releases ($14.99) and $2.60 for most catalog titles ($9.99), I only picked up 3 yesterday:
- Observe and Report (2009)
- The Crossing Guard (1995)
- Weekend at Bernie's II (1993)

The sign in the window said there was 6 days left, yet the cashier said Saturday was their last day. That said, I'll probably go back on Saturday since I have other errands to run in that area anyway.

There was stacks upon stacks of titles like Management and a few other recent releases. Not a single copy of The Hangover in the entire store from when they started going out of business til now, I'm disappointed since that was one title I was hoping to pick up during this liquidation sale. The nearest Blockbuster is now about 10 miles / 15 minutes away, which I'm sure no one from the area will travel just to rent a movie. That said, a Redbox kiosk also got taken out from the grocery store in the same shopping plaza due to vandalism.
