The Stranger and Kansas City Confidential are from MGM (which explains the higher price). Are there any bonus features on Kansas City? Looks like just a short featurette on The Stranger....very disappointing when compared to the Fox Film Noir releases.

Edit: Indeed, the MGM series seems to be very light on extras. In fact, "Kansas City Confidential" does not have any special features at all. Here's a comparison of that edition with the other versions that are available.

Taps is really good, definitely underrated. Great debut for Sean Penn and good work from Hutton and Scott, and Tom Cruise is surprisingly well cast here.

To contribute something to the thread, I think that the film The Return (dir. Andrei Zvyagintsev) is excellent. Definitely worth a rental, if not a purchase. The $15 that DD has it for right now is the best price I have seen for awhile, maybe ever. DVD Talk review is here.

If you're going to double dip on this one, I'd definitely recommend the R2 MoC version. Along with the Jean Vigo set, it's what convinced me to finally go region-free.

Thanks for the quick reply on the Film Noirs! I have all the Fox releases, but have only had a chance to watch a few...since I consider these part of my permanent collection they actually have low priority in viewing.

I have Kansas City Confidential on one of the public domain sets I bought awhile back - great film...but price is too high for me to double-dip right now. I'll just wait and hope to find it used sometime. Peter

Damn! Forgot the first two there. 52 Pick-Up is a BADASS movie, Roy Scheider was the man in this. John Glover is a great villain too...right up with Jackie Brown and Out of Sight for the best Elmore Leonard adaptation.

And At Close Range...how can you go wrong with Penn and Walken? Plus Crispin Glover is in it.

Both collections are awfully tempting to buy at $25 does anyone know if the prints of the films are high quality?

Drak, could you let us know the quality of the Robin Hood in the Fairbanks Collection? I believe it is the new 35-mm remastered print. I am considering upgradiing from my earlier Kino edition.

Criterion announced that Silent Years collection nearly ten years ago, and they haven't said a thing about it for a long, long time. So I think it's safe to say that it's not coming out, especially since KINO is releasing the restorations of the three films you mention.

They aren't Criterion quality, but they aren't bad.

Nopes, the old one and that's the sorry state of affairs.

I already own a lot of Kino stuff (German Horror Box, Fritz Lang Box, DW Griffith Box, It (with Clara Bow), Metropolis (outside of the copy that comes in the Box), and probably some I'm forgetting... but damn this sale is awesome. I am very, very poor but I'm seriously considering:
