I don't think the dump bin hurts dvd any worse than the price drop for newer releases. Movies that came out 4 months ago can be had for less than $10 now. I know it's preventing me from buying some new releases. At least with the dump bin, they're usually less popular movies. Someone's got to sell them so it might as well be wal-mart.
BTW, Wal-mart wants to maximize profits too.

And yes, we know Wal-Mart wants to maximize profits, but Wal-Mart sells DVD at very low margins which is what devalues dvds. Wal-Mart wants the traffic that dvds bring in to buy the high margin China junk they sell.
I am not saying I want the bins to go, I am just playing Devils advocate as to why most retailers are glad to see them go.

Now, I’ve long held these dump bins are bad for the business, as they devalue DVD in the consumer’s mind. These dump bins are ubiquitous, stationed like big fat sentries around the entrance to the electronics department, home of more sensibly priced DVDs.
I, for one, am not sorry to see them go
Who is this guy? A mouthpiece for some corporation who says DVD prices need to be more "sensible"?
Go ahead and make'em disappear. This just gives me an absolute reason not to drop by a local Wal-Mart. This dumbass forgets you don't just buy the DVD, but normally buy a lot of other products in the store on your way out. The bins are rarely used by avid DVD collectors. Most of them are created for impulsive shoppers, and adding another $5 to the total shopping receipt, isn't too bad.
These Doom And Gloom / Must Sell DVD Media More Expensive In Order For World To Survive retards are just spewing out bullshit speech to justify their new ideas of making DVD titles more expensive.
Devaluing DVD doesn't make sense. Less prices, more product, more profit. Wal-Mart has been successful at doing this for years.
And holy crap, we better pull those Twizzler bins as well. We don't wanna DEVALUE LICORICE!
Again, this guy is full of DVD Sensormatic tabs up to his skull.

But they'll soon come to find their overall sales from other departments will decrease as well. And then we'll see those $5 DVD bins come back.

The $5 bin has lost some of its allure. I only bought one disc from Wally in the last year. Still, I would hate to see it go as it's the only thing that will get me to go with my wife to Walmart.

On the first day of any high school economics class they tell you about "opportunity cost" and how the higher the price is, the lower the demand will be, and the trick was to find the sweet spot between these factors. If this insipid editorial is to be believed, the studios are reacting to the slowing of growth in the same manner that the music industry coped with losses of revenue because people finished replacing their vinyl with CDs and having the same suicidal thought: "We need to raise prices!!!"
After they succeeded in kill HD DVD, they now want to choke off the low end of the standard DVD market in the lunatic dream of stampeding consumers into shifting to Blu-ray discs at $30-$40 a pop. With the news full of non-stop hysteria about a recession - mostly to stampede voters into voting for socialist candidates - the idea that people are champing at the bit to spend double on software and quadruple on hardware is insane.
Who's going to be laughing all the way to the bank? NetFlix.

The dump bins suck. At least when Best Buy has some bargain DVD's for 3.99 to 6.99 etc, it's all nicely organized near the front of the DVD section.
I think the mindset is the dump bin is all crap and most of the time it is.
I really don't have the time and patience to sift through thousands of scattered DVD's to get the Foolscreen copy of Coach Carter or Sky Captain.

The guy who wrote it knows his target audience. Greedy stores that want more revenue. Thats why their so slap happy about blu-ray. We get to re-buy all of our titles again and at a higher cost. There was even an ad in this issue that proudly stated how the average blu ray "basket" was $172 compared to the $67 "basket" of the dvd shopper.

There's no way Wal Mart is going to get rid of these bins, they just get too much traffic. The guy who wrote this article is a joke. I'm not about to start replacing my DVD's with blu-ray, too big a library, and for me, DVD is just fine.

I'm a little surprised. There's more activity at the dump bin than anywhere else in my local Wal Marts. To replace them with BR discs that I don't think sell very well with the Wal Mart crowd can't be good business for them, regardless of how they make DVD look. I would think their first priority would be to make money.

My nearest WalMart had done away with it's dump bin years ago. They replaced it with a 4 sided display that made it much easier to browse for DVDs. When I'm in other WMs that still have a dump bin I may glance at whatever is on top, but I don't waste my time digging through them.

I still shop there, though. I'm still in an economic phase in my life where price is king.

If stores seriously think Blu-ray is going to make them any money, they are going to have a rather interesting awakening.
If prices increase...downloading will increase as well. I've always been a proponent of cheap DVD prices because it removes piracy rather effectively. But raise prices and try to gouge the consumer? They'll start downloading more than ever.

And I guarantee you there will be replacement bins with candy or some other shit. This argument doesn't get off the ground. Retailers want them to go because the studios are telling them they won't be doing these bargains anymore and the prices are now going up. The retailers don't give a shit. They'll replace and endcap with something else and sell DVDs at the newer prices.

This magazine is distributed to DVD distributors, retailers and video stores. Many of which dont want lower dvd prices. He is preaching to the choir in front of him.
I dont want them to go away, but you have to put the article in the perspective it was aimed at, retailers, not bargain dvd hunters.
If prices increase...downloading will increase as well.
It would seem rather stupid of them, when they are issuing PR crap about how they are the savior of the consumer in lean economic times.
