I'm a fan of historical period pieces, especially stuff with swords involved, and I've never seen this. Always meant to. Will check out my local Dollar Generals. Thanks OP.

Thanks OP!

Both copies I found had cuts on the spine. Is that the way all the Gladiator's are? At least it's not a bad one in the UPC code like all the other DVDs in that box.

All 3 I found were in perfect shape.

I cant believe that when people get a $30 movie on a closeout for only $5 that they are concerned about cut-outs! unless they are only buying it to try and make money off it, and I thought this was a forum for film collectors.

C_Fletch 04-03-08 02:15 PM

Some people hold their collections in high regard. Me on the other hand could give a rat's a$$ about what they look like, as long as they play. I figured I'd buy a resurfacer some day.

As far as where these came from I would bet to guess some company went out of business and liquidated their stock to Big Lots.

iacon45 04-03-08 03:07 PM

The one I found had some little bangs and dents and one of the plastic trays was half way off of the inner package but nothing serious. The discs themselves were scratch free.

Anyone successful in checking the same store twice and finding it the second time around? Or perhaps discovered more than one copy at a single location?

GreenMonkey 04-04-08 02:11 PM

No luck on my 2 local ones. A few more sorta on my way to school that I might be able to check.

I did see the Criterion of "The Life Aquatic" for $6 though. Not sure if it was the 1-disc or the 2-disc.

Man I checked 6 Dollar Generals stores today, and nada.

It was a fun treasure hunt, but I always feel dirty going into Dollar General store and searching through a crap load of VHS tapes and lousy dvds.

In my hunt, I found about 20 copies of World Poker Tour Season 2, plenty of Unauthorized American Idol. Too bad I couldn't find one copy of Gladiator. :(

Fred Meyer (northwest grocery chain) has this in their ad for $12.99 this week. Not as cheap as $5, but it's still less than Amazon's price of $24.99.

kstublen 04-06-08 11:44 PM

I went to like four Dollar Generals and didn't find a damn thing. I found one copy of Gladiator...on VHS...

Just an FYI - the Freddy's I checked had the regular edition on the shelf for $ 12.99 sale, even though the ad did have the pic of the extended edition. I am thinking this was a mistake in the ad - if anyone actualy finds the extended edition for $ 12.99 at Fred Meyer, please let me know . . .

Add me as a third...

red5bv06 04-08-08 01:36 AM

Fourth.
I've checked every store on this side of Chattanooga, including the one C_Fletch visited. No luck. I'll be driving through Hixson tomorrow, so I'll check two more stores out that way.

You could always price match somewhere else.

I've checked a couple of DG stores and no Gladiator, but I was able to find a copy of Easy Rider 35th Anniversary for $10.

In case you weren't aware - some have found it for $3 at Big Lots.

boc4ever 04-10-08 08:59 PM

No luck at the Newark, DE store for Gladiator.

Aren't the $10 Easy Rider's Previously viewed?

Had no idea, but also didn't see it at my local Big Lots.

I presume Dollar General is different from Family Dollar? Because tonight when I made the rounds to where the local Dollar General stores used to be, they were either gone, or were now Family Dollar. I didn't bother to get out of the car.

bigjim25 04-10-08 10:39 PM

JiM T, you are correct. Family Dollar is high on alot of stuff also.
You did the right thing staying in your car. :D

moklerman 04-11-08 01:14 AM

Does anyone know if Dollar General is the same thing as Albertsons? We don't have Dollar General stores here in central California. Anyone score an extra copy of Gladiator they'd like to sell?

At this one forum I used to read, the crybabies overfilled their diapers when studios started putting the UPC cutouts in the redundant cardboard sleeves. When someone hypothesized that it was to prevent people from slipping more expensive titles, like Criterions, inside bargain titles, these twits sneered that the cashiers should be imposed upon to slide the cases out of the sleeves during checkout rather than their precious sleeves be sullied. When I pointed out that they don't even see the cutouts when it's shelved and it had no effect on the quality of the movie, they really went crazy and flamed mercilessly. Of course, these same nimrods were the type to babble on about how An Inconvenient ManBearPig was the most important movie they'd ever seen and how it changed their empty lives but didn't see the irony of their having a cow over a wasteful paper product.

I don 't know about ownership, but Albertson's is the equivalent to ACME, which is a supermarket chain on the East Coast. Dollar General is really a family dollar where some items are more than $1.
