Thanks mifuneral, my order was at dvdplanet. I did receive my first order in 3 days with the standard shipping which was awsome.

hows the transfer on Seventh Seal????

i have a feeling they might re-release it later on, since its one of their early titles.

mifuneral 03-07-07 07:17 AM

I didn't have a problem with the transfer, but then again my tv is kinda old so that might be a factor. I agree that there's a chance of a re-release but nothing's been even hinted at for Bergman stuff unfortunately. I'd say if you're a huge fan and can get it for a good price, get it now and double dip if you have to. If you're just a casual fan of Bergman and want the film simply as an item that was recommended to you, rent it for now and wait to see if it gets re-released in the future. It's not like there won't be other Criterion sales later on, afterall.

I feel as though the transfer is pretty good. Included in the supplements is one of Criterion's restoration demonstrations. To see the work that was already done to fix the film makes the transfer even more impressive for me. I also hope that they rerelease this in the future, but I think it is already worth it for the current price. Then again, this is one of my favoritre films, so I am a bit biased.

Krelyan 03-07-07 05:46 PM

I'm still new with dealing with Criterions. It seems they rerelease a lot of the their titles. Is it usually just a repackaging? I was wondering if any of these titles were going to receive the rerelease treatment soon since they seem to be a few years old: Rashomon, Hidden Fortress and Life of Brian.

Anyways, I ordered Yojimbo/Sanjuro, Brazil and Ran.

No, it's never just a repackaging as they're geared towards the collector, librarian, etc. The differences are usually an improved transfer/remastering and additional special features.

mifuneral 03-07-07 07:00 PM

I wouldn't say they're *never* just a repackaging as I think that's what 400 Blows was. However, it's almost always more than a repackaging.

ElCambio 03-07-07 07:59 PM

The 400 Blows got a new anamorphic transfer and new extras including newsreel footage, audition footage, and some television interviews with Truffaut. You're right, though, that there are very rare exceptions of Criterion re-releases that don't offer anything new. The only two I can think of at the moment were M. Hulot's Holiday and Mon Oncle, and this was because they regained the rights to them, the transfers couldn't have been significantly improved upon, and they didn't have any new features at hand to add to them.

FangsFirst 03-07-07 09:18 PM

Traffic was re-released. but it wasn't repackaged.
So I guess that doesn't count either, eh?
Nevermind.

What I believe this refers to is the tendency of Criterion to reissue a title in a new "edition". In those cases it seems there are always improvements of one sort or another over the original CC edition. Seven Samurai, Amarcord, M, The Wages Of Fear, Playtime and the new The Third Man are the examples I can think of.

(Beauty and the Beast, The 400 Blows, Yojimbo, and Sanjuro were all given the full upgrade treatment;Charade and Brazil were all given anamorphic enhanced updates with no other changes. That's all I can remember beyond what you've posted)

That's what he means to refer to I think; I don't really see how anybody can complain about those titles though. I mean, they're reissuing some of the first dvds they ever released, what company hasn't done that? But instead of just minimally upgrading the transfer or throwing on a pointless title to try and sell it, they completely recreate the entire package to give it a substantially increased value. I mean, look at how extensive the Seven Samurai reissue alone is. Not only is the transfer lightyears better, but every single aspect of the bonus material is unequaled in it's attention to detail.

I doubt they'll reissue The Seventh Seal, but seeing as it's one of my favorites, I'm praying they do. I can only dream of how great that would be.

Anyway, back on topic...

I used the GC bonus to grab Rififi and Beauty and the Beast for around $31. I'm thinking I'll do one more order, probably grab the Monsters and Madmen set, that seems like a lot of fun. But I don't know, Fires on the Plain and Mouchette are tempting as well.

Thanks OP. I got my shipment today. Normally I order from DDD but the coupons made me try DVDplanet for the first time. It went smoothly.

bgmat58 03-09-07 01:09 PM

got my 7 samurai yesterday but the battle of algiers is backordered so ill just have to wait. when is this sale over?

JackBurton 03-09-07 01:19 PM

Picked up Gimme Shelter as a blind buy at dvdplanet w/ gco. Been wanting to check it out for a while.

areacode212 03-09-07 08:21 PM

Cool, ordered Seven Samurai, Dazed & Confused, and the Passion of Joan of Arc from DVDPlanet. I got free shipping, but I'm not really in a hurry.

Hal2000 03-09-07 09:23 PM

Will the 20% off sale be better?

I don't need any of these titles immediately, so I was wondering if anyone knew if the typical 20% off sale at DD will be better than the current sale prices offered by either DD or DVDPlanet? I think DD sometimes fiddles with prices during the 20% off sale, but those prices might still be better with that coupon. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

g 03-09-07 09:29 PM

The 20 percent sale is off dd regular price. This dvdplanet sale is better if you use coupon.

DVDPlanet also ran a 20% off sale last year. I wonder if they will repeat that promotion.

Problem with that is, I don't remember them having ever done that before. I'm betting you can't count on DVDPlanet 20% off.

I still don't know if DD is better now or better at the 20% off sale.

tofferman 03-10-07 06:12 PM

Ordered via dvdplanet:

Yojimbo/Sanjuro (1962) Criterion Collection ($41.97) and also included "All in the Family" - The Complete Sixth Season ($20.96), for a total of $45.94 after applying a $5 coupon and a credit of $12. Thanks to the OP!

MikeShaynePI 03-10-07 07:51 PM

Damn why's it have to end on the 16th. I want to get Naked City, but it comes out on the 20th.

mifuneral 03-10-07 09:08 PM

Ah, but there will always be a dvd just out of range of the sale no matter how far they extend it. ;)

Take heart in the knowledge that this sale *will* happen again.

dx23 03-11-07 12:47 PM

Almost 2 weeks in the sale and there is no sign of the Third Man. I believe they are going to list it as soon as the sale is over.

Edit: well damn! it is now listed at dvdplanet, but only at 35% off. Damn!

Preorders were only included at DVD Planet early on due to, I believe, a mistake. They wouldn't normally be covered by these sales at Deep Discount, either.
