Yet another $4.88 batch at Wal-Mart
#26
Could someone please help with me the details of "Someone Like You"? It appears there were separate widescreen and "full screen" releases which included some deleted scenes. The DVD Walmart has contains both the widescreen and "full screen" versions with no mention of the deleted scenes.
On this 3rd release did Sony throw away the extras (and possibly reduce the bitrate) so they could cram both versions onto 1 DVD-9? I hope not.

Abintra, thanks for the help. I've never heard of that allmovie site before. Assuming the info on "Someone Like You" is correct (though I've never found a site that was error-free), it appears all of the extras except the commentary were dropped so that they could squeeze the unnecessary "full screen" version on the disc.
This means I'll have to pass on the Walmart dual-format $4.50 one and buy the old Widescreen only edition when it's cheap enough ($6 or less).
I wish Sony/Columbia would stop doing this type of stuff (i.e. re-releasing inferior DVDs). Many old Sony titles were DVD-10, and I've seen many in Walmart's dump bin where they dropped the Widescreen side and left only the DVD-5 "full screen" side. I wouldn't buy those at any price.

BIN there done that
Perused the Wal-Mart DVD bargain bin at the Ceres CA store, thankfully the spanish titles now have a bin of their own. Still, the selection is a mix of multiple past studio sales, wrestling titles, dollar DVDs as well as the regular $5.50 offerings.
I can see why the old $5.50 thread is no longer maintained, as one can find titles from DVD sales of 2 years ago, and then search in vain for any recent rumored sale titles. The bin is such a stew of material that it's much less predictable to guess that might be found there. It's also funny to think that the bins empty more slowly because $5.50 is no longer considered a bargain.
Picked out two and they rang up as:
The Seven-Ups $4.50
Sunset Boulevard $4.44

Good point. A freind of mine was telling me that he talked to the electronics manager at the W.M he visits and asked about any good deals on dvds. The manager said that their store will be bundling together any 2 of the 5.50 movies and selling them for $6. So, a 2/$6 sale. This should eliminate those titles that have been at the bottom of the bin for years!! Anyway I'm not sure if this can be said for all Wal-Marts, but according to my freind that's the plan at that particular one.
I think that would be a great idea to invoke for all dump bins. W.M. has a 4.88 or less sale going on every 3-4 months. Honestly, I usually see a better selection of movies for 4.88 than I do for 5.50. Maybe $5.50 movies should take a pricecut to $2.25, that will clear some backstock!!

The $5.50 bins I've noticed have been real shit piles.
Now they're mostly filled with old $4.88 titles; I guess they rolled the prices back up.
I also notice that budget titles -- like packs of z-string John Wayne movies, budget WWII documentaries, two-discs sets of PD kung fu movies, and children's DVDs -- seem to be taking over the bin.

Saw a new display of 4.88 "Romantic" movies today, quite a few titles.
Some I remember:
Sliding Doors
An Officer and a Gentleman
Serving Sara
Ghost
Runaway Bride
Forces of Nature
Election
There were probably 15 different titles. My memory fails me now, some were older movies. Hopefully someone else can fill in some gaps.

I hate when titles I pick up for $7.50-$10 end up in the $4.88-$5.50 bin in less than six months (Election, Muppets Take Manhatten, etc.).
Picked up Evolution, The Edge, Sunset Boulevard, Joy Ride, and The Seven-Ups (blind buy - thanks for the recommendation, folks) @ $5.50 apiece. Almost picked up To Catch a Thief in the "romantic" section, but want to hold off for a week until we learn more details about the upcoming special edition. The $4.88 special would have been nice, but no dice in my neck of the woods. Wal-Mart made it up to me by having Guitar Hero II hooked up for demo and no one waiting to play. Jammed out some Alice In Chains, Nirvana, and Stone Temple Pilots. Apparently, I need to buy a Playstation...
