Something kept bothering me about this. Misprices at the cash register are one thing. You can always point out the discrepancy to the clerk/manager and let them decide whether or not the price should be honered. We have done this many times...sometimes we get the "sale" price, sometimes we don't. A few times we have been astonished to find that the "unbelievable" price was really the correct price. But this was different. Nobody...I mean nobody...gives away product for free, unless it's for charity or as a "loss leader" (as in B1G1). And Amazon has been a super online merchant as far as shipping, secure packaging, customer service, etc. We have gotten lots of great deals from them over the years...not that it should matter. If they were the worst & had taken adantage of us, that still didn't mean that it was "right" to do the same to them.
I couldn't bring myself to order more. We went to the flea market & sold/traded some DVDs with the reigning DVD merchant there & came home to discover that the "deal" was still running hot & heavy (with more titles available) & that the titles were shipping. Instead of wanting to order more (I estimate that we could have made about $600-$1000 depending upon what we picked...these would have been for resale), I felt discouraged & a little ashamed. So I made a decision. If the titles do arrive and indeed are "free", I'm emailing Amazon about the misprice so they can charge the correct prices. If they decide not to, I can live with that. Either way, I'll feel better (I never expected this thing to actually go through in the first place).
I admit to being awfully tempted for a brief time to jump in & go hogwild with this...and in a strange way, I'm glad that I had to deal with this. It made me realize that I've been becoming too involved with the $ of the "hobby" and too heavily influenced by the prospect of making money. It was sort of a slap-in-the-head wakeup call...how many of my ideals was I willing to sacrifice for the sake of a few dollars?
Also, I know that some look at this as Amazon's "Christmas gift". Here on Christmas Eve, I don't want to think about taking advantage of an honest merchant as having anything to do with Christmas. I could try to rationalize the "deal" by saying that it was their mistake and they should have caught it, therefore I'm should feel completely guilt-free. Would I feel the same way if the computer error had been in their favor and they charged me twice the amount? No, I would write to them & expect them to refund the money that they owed me. And the fact that Amazon is a giant retailer shouldn't affect my decision, either. As has been pointed out, someone always pays for these mistakes, whether through higher prices & insurance rates, less discounts on sales, etc. But that still isn't the real issue. The bottom line is whether I should take something that doesn't really belong to me. If the clerk mistakenly gives me $5 extra in change, do I keep it or give it back? To me the answer is obvious. That's what I have been taught by church & parents, and that's how I expect others to treat me. I doubt that even those without a written code of ethics expect to be treated differently.
I'm not pointing fingers at others, either...each person has to decide what to do in cases like this...but I'm also not apologetic for feeling this way. Over the past 5 years I've seen people get flamed, ridiculed, etc. for posting comments such as this, but I wanted those who felt "dumb" about not placing multiple orders or those who felt that this was more of a "steal" than a "deal" to know that you are not alone. Sleep well tonight on Christmas Eve & let's celebrate the birth of Christ tomorrow.
Merry Christmas to all DVDTalkers out there!!!!!!

**Update to earlier post**
I didn't wait until I got my shipments. I emailed Customer Support & explained that I had been incorrectly billed (not charged), supplied the order #'s and details, and requested that they correct the charges.
Within an hour, they responded with a very nice email saying that the available promotional funds covered the charges & that I would only be charged the $2.46 shipping for 1 of the shipments.
And, no...I still don't wish I had ordered more.
Kudos to Amazon.
Once again...Merry Christmas!

3 of my 5 orders have entered the "completed orders" phase complete with a tracking number and shipping confirmation via USPS. It's still saying that the carrier has been notified but that doesn't concern me since I opted for the free shipping and with it been the season and all, I really don't expect these to be picked up and shipped until after Christmas. On 2 of the orders I have estimated delivery between December 30th and January 2nd and on the other one its estimated delivery time is 2nd January and 4th January.
As for the other 2 orders I placed they are both still intact but are in the "open orders" status with an estimated delivery time of January 3rd to 5th, however the prices are still the same ($2 and $1.50 respectively). So since these are estimated to arrive later than the others I'm hoping I'll get the shipping notices today.
I'll be happy and relieved when I can check the status and judge when they are due to arrive and even happier when they get delivered.

The funny thing is that I was waiting for Christmas to buy Seinfeld waiting for some specials and went to amazon yesterday and saw the 2 for 1 sale, so I decided to buy seasons 1-2,3 first, and when I check out I saw the USD3.97 price.
I bougth all the seasons instead, feeling a little guilty.
Later I came here to see if someone noticed the error and YES you noticed.

[rant] Unfortunately, I did not get in on this deal
But to all those who hem and haw about ethics and morality I have this to say; save your belly-aching for those people who actually go and steal, rob, and con people. Give them your grief. But when a legitimate company offers an item at a price everyone knows is incorrect, that is THEIR fault, and their QC methods should be called into question. If I walk out of a store with a receipt in my hand, I have fulfilled my obligation to that company for payment. Period. The amount on that receipt is irrelevant, because in the eyes of that establishment and the general law at large all requirements for purchase have been met. This is no different. Some IT guy had one too many coffees and hit one too many keys. Period. Oops on thier part. But they are still selling it. [/rant]

I know I shoudn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but I'm a bit discouraged that it looks like I'm "only" getting the deal on one order, while others who really abused this deal are getting them all honored.

I guess congrats to everyone who got in. My one order that went through at the "right" price included the two sets I'd probably not buy at regular price and the ones I wanted most didn't go through. I talked to a CSR and he basically told me there wasn't anything he could do to change that. I guess I should have been greedier and then maybe I would've had more orders go through.

PS: 4 orders, and 1 went through. No regrets. And, as it turns out my moral compass is still working.

Hello!
My highest regards to you, for your ethical point of view, not many people think that way.
I myself placed 3 orders for 6 items, all but 1 (which was about to ship a few days later,
so I didn't expect it to go through anyway) got through.
I placed the orders for items I really wanted to have,
for e.g. Rescue Me S1&S2 / Blue Thunder&TJ Hooker / Hart to Hart S1&S2 (Season 2 got cancelled).
I thought about getting the complete "married with children" box sets, but I could really not get myself to place those, normally
$185 orders, as it wasn't really a must-have to me, more a "would be nice to have".
So I couldn't get myself to make those orders and I didn't wanted to be greedy.
Guess....to me there is a difference between taking advantage on a few items and greed/fraud, whatever you may call it.
Saw some people here placing more than 50 orders, I take my fair share of the guilt for my orders, but something like placing 20/30/50 is just sick to me.
Not to be understood as fingerpointing, but just my point of view.
regards
Warrior

Here is the way I look at this. Amazon in the past has screwed me over. I placed an order for a game & guncon combo. Every email, notice, and everything else told me it was getting ready to ship, and that the order wasn't going to get messed up. So I then order 3 other games from Amazon Marketplace that use the guncons...games I wouldn't even THINK about getting without the guns. So I get my 3 games, but I still never got my first order. Amazon then cancles it, saying it isn't in stock anymore. I tell them about these games I bought, and how I have no use for them now. Amazon says it's sorry, while I say it's not fair that due to their mistake I pretty much just got burned the price of 3 games. They do nothing after a few emails.
This is the bottom line for me. I'm sure most, if not all of you have gotten in on *SOME* price mistake or deal that wasn't supposed to be. Sure, back then it might have only saved a buck or two. But the way you guys are talking about it, that would be just as wrong. Was it theft when DDD had the Apes box at $1.80 or something? I don't remember anyone complaining about people ordering those. And to me, DDD has been way better than Amazon, giving us great sales almost all of the time. So at what point does it go from an "amazing deal" to "stealing"?
And to the guy that emailed Amazon about the order, why would you do that? Why not wait until everyone else got their stuff. The one rule for stuff like this is to not contact the company. If you feel guitly about this, then that's your thing. But possibly ruining it for others isn't right.
We're all here to get the best deals on dvds, and when the motherload hits, you attempt to ruin it for all of us.

I await the day that someone here makes a mistake at their job, which is then greedily exploited by hordes of people. When your boss comes around asking who messed up, the fingers will be pointing at you. I'm not claiming to be high and mighty, but that's just ridiculous to claim that Amazon has screwed people over in the past, so you deserve to screw them over. I don't get it.
We all know this isn't some *gift* from Amazon, there's no excuse for claiming hundreds of dollars in DVD's that don't belong to any of you.

The truth of the matter is you can not make people feel guilty when they think they have done nothing wrong. Forget the livilyhood of the people that work for Amazon, oh yeah they are a big enough company and can soak up the loss. Nobody thinks big picture. People just think about bulging up their shelves. If Amazon loses money there will always be another online retailer to take advantage of.
I applaud the person who e-mailed Amazon. Good for you.

Get it now?
