It does look like some titles are still trickling in. I picked up Advertising Rules!, The Debut, and The Red Dwarf today, and I had never seen any of them at any local stores before.
|
Ken Cline, I wasn't really meaning anything by the comments I thought I was just commenting with you about the lackluster selection there. I guess it didn't seem that way.
My Big Lots has still not restocked. |
Mine restocked some time between Wednesday and today - They had mostly the $4.99 ones already mentioned, and about 5 $2 titles, though nothing I was interested in. Surprisingly they had about a dozen that were $4.00, a price I hadn't seen before. Nothing noteworthy and I can't seem to remember any titles except the recent made-for-TV movie with Brad Garrett as Jackie Gleason. They also had a plethora of 1.50 cardboard-sleeve DVDs, the usual Public Domain stuff. Taxes tapped me out temporarily, so I didn't buy anything.
|
I strolled in this morning (St. Louis Park BL) just as they were putting out a couple of boxes of $2 titles. It looked like three copies of each movie were being racked and I had them all already. One new title to be "emboldened" on Ken's master list: "Cyborg 009: Unedited and Uncut". This is a two-disc anime title, featuring the first eight episodes. Includes "exclusive character booklet."
|
My BL restocked with a bunch of $1.20 VHS tapes. All the $2 DVDs that were there last week were sold.

I went to the St Cloud, MN store again and they had a couple dozen more $2 DVDs, I only picked up Returner this time, I noticed a copy of Tube which I already had and they had a bunch of copies of the Cyborg 009 DVD docdoowop mentioned.

Greetings!
A friend turned me on to this forum last week. I made my first Big Lots run yesterday and I'm totally hooked. I live in L.A. (Burbank) and even though I got a late afternoon start, I did a sweep of six locations in the SF Valley. I hit three more on the way home from work tonight. Some places had next to nothing and at others I managed to walk away with some nifty finds. I've wound up with about three dozen titles for the two days, which is pretty good considering I'm late to the party... Cool thread! Dave |
Welcome Dave. I'm jealous; I'd have to drive a couple of hundred miles to hit six stores here. Don't forget the BL swap thread:
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=496298 And in case you haven't discovered it, Ken Cline's master Sony/Columbia-TriStar OOP list: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=135 |

Just for reference: single discs http://images2.dvdempire.com/gen/movies/575823.jpg http://images2.dvdempire.com/gen/movies/575822.jpg and the 2 disc http://images2.dvdempire.com/gen/movies/575824.jpg I'm not a huge anime fan (I like Miyazaki stuff), but, my son likes it, so... I may have to find this. Thanks for the heads-up docdoowop! |
Another thanks to docdoowop. Knollwood was finally worth the trip.
|
You're welcome, MrE. Glad to see another forum member visits my local store.
|
I hit the Lebanon, OH, store after a photo/video shoot for a client, and...wow. Either they just got an enormous shipment, or Lebanon residents have no taste and let these discs sit this entire time, or both. ;)
I finally found Tube locally, but didn't need it because Ken Cline was good enough to send it to me a couple of weeks ago. They had almost everything else I have seen or picked up, as well as a couple of new surprises like Goodbye Lenin! and the 2-disc uncut Cyborg 009 mentioned above. I guess it's a good thing I've been picking up a few discs at a time at other stores over the past couple of months, as I could have easily spent over $100 at this store alone if I didn't own most of them already. There were several "new" $4.00 garbage titles featuring the likes of Brian Dennehy and Louis Gossett Jr., too. |
Also...Ken, I spotted Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story at the above location, if you want to bold it on your list.

New titles! These were just racked at my local (St. Louis Park) store, all $3.00:
The Blackout Fire Down Below Looking Glass War No Contest See No Evil Solid Gold Cadillac Time Code Wrong Is Right Young Adam They also had a re-stock of many previous titles now stickered at $3 (instead of $2). I managed to resist the 75-80 copies of Charlton Heston's Bible Stories. |

List updated! I know that one used to be $2. Still a bargain, though. I'll have to hit BigLots again tonight. |

Hey, Ken Cline. What kind of software are you using for your collection statistics that you have a few screenshots of?

Cool stuff, Ken!
|
God, I don't think I could stomach typing all of that in o.O
|
Really cool indeed, Ken. Too bad I'm not that savy about MS Access. Otherwise, it's a great way of keeping inventory of a huge DVD collection, or anything for that matter.

Wow. That's an Access database? That is seriously impressive. I've been using Access for my collection too, but I've only got a fraction of that. I wish I had the patience and skills to do what you've done there. That's awesome.

Another title I don't see on the list but found today is Motorama. It was priced at 4.99. Other than that and Good Bye Lenin mentioned above, there was not much of anything new at my local Big Lots, but I may have missed some as I had not been there in awhile. Also there was 1 copy of The Bear which is a Sony title I think that is also not on the list.

I'm in Florida now and found a whole bunch of "new" titles...
Some I now own: Another Day In Paradise Governess The Last Days Of Frankie The Fly The Lost In Yonkers My Life There were many other titles but forgot them now... |
I picked up four more for $2 each yesterday:
-The Code -Innocence -Once A Thief -Zhou Yu's Train |
Picked up the following this weekend:
Looking Glass War - $3 Blackout - $3 Sin - $2 New Best Friend - $2 3-Way - $2 Cyborg 009 (2 disc) - $2 Young Adam - $3 A funny thing happened when the girl at the cash register was scanning the DVDs. The security tag beeper was going off at the register (you know the one that they have to demagnetize so it won't go off when you leave the store). Well, she kept passing the discs that were beeping, in the confusion she forgot to ring up one of them, so I got 7 DVDs for the price of 6 :) I saw 2 copies of Timecode ($2), but it was listed as 1.33:1. So I passed on them. When I got home I did a little research. The film was shot open matte with the theatrical release cropped to 1.85:1. Here's what I found:

The open matte allows the windows to be as open as possible, which I think is always a welcome touch. I am always in favor of widescreen when possible, but Timecode is an exception to that rule. The transfer looks terrific, but since this was shot on digital cameras, it lacks the realness of film. But that doesn't hinder the film in the least, so I won't knock the score here either. The colors seem bright, contrast is more than solid, and flesh tones look natural as well. A few small issues arise because of the use of digital cameras, but that is not the fault of this transfer. This is an excellent overall transfer that allows the unique visuals to shine through, kudos to Columbia/Tristar.
I still may pick this up due to the abundance of extras including 2 version of the film, rated and unrated. |
I saw multiple copies of the following titles, which aren't bolded on the list:

A TON of new, non-Columbia titles have poured in to my BL. All priced at $2 and $3 from "Blue Laser Films" and "Echo Bridge Home Entertainment". Most of the stuff is action-oriented, with the usual cast of 2d tier actors. I *did* spring for these:
Greetings (DeNiro's 1st, DePalma dir. 1968) Once A Thief (John Woo) Orphans and Angels (New Zealand director Harold Brodie's first) They Shoot Divas, Don't They (Wes Craven-produced TV feature) Spirit Hunter (Indie horror. Won Key West & Telluride Film Fests There were far too many to look through and I was rushed. No new Columbia-Tri Star titles. |
I've seen a ton of the Blue Laser titles, too. Every one I have seen has been full-frame and has only the Canadian rating on the back (but no bilingual packaging). A few of the titles in doc's list ring a bell, and I also remember seeing Venus On The Half Shell, mainly because the woman on the cover is quite attractive.
