Didn't get The Alarmist.

It's been my experience that Sony almost always does anamorphic - except for maybe their full frame discs :( In fact, most of their discs that I've gotten lately state on the packaging that they have been remastered in HD - for future re-releases I presume.

I verified these with DVDDecrypter and IfoEdit. You can find more info about how to check anamorphic discs here http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1640712

Thank you both very much. :)

Watch out guys. Sony regularly releases DVDs with fool-frame on one side and wide-screen on the other, and then somewhere down the line they go and drop one side of the disc without changing the UPC and if they still have FF/WS slipcovers in the warehouse they use those until the run out. So, just because the case says WS or a UPC-based database says they are WS does not mean they are. You can only be sure by actually checking the physical disc - if you are lucky it will be labeled, otherwise you gotta play it to know for sure.

Since these are remaindered discs, they were probably the last off the production line, so they are probably most likely to have been reduced to FF only.

abintra 01-24-07 01:35 AM

In case it helps anyone, the following are most of the wide/full releases from Ken Cline's list of found titles (might have missed a couple but otherwise it should be most of them from that list).

The Big Picture
Cold Steel
Earth Vs. The Spider
The Evil That Men Do
Fat City
The Front
Gloria
The Governess
Hanky Panky
I Capture the Castle
Jackpot
Just Looking
Loser
The Man Who Loved Women
Me You Them
There's a Girl in My Soup
They Came to Cordura
Trixie

Alan Smithee 01-24-07 07:30 PM

My copy of "Just Looking" says only Widescreen on the cover, but the disc inside is 2-sided with a "bonus" foolscreen version- first time I've seen that happen!

Anamorphic Verification

Here's a list of DVDs I verified anamorphic. I also noted what the packaging states and if it's a flipper. Maybe you will find it useful. I'll add to this list as I go throught my discs.

I am uncertain about this widescreen and fullscreen situation but I can say that my copies obtained from Big Lots of Trixie and Desert Blue are in widescreen.

Tomboymama 01-26-07 02:14 PM

I stopped by my Big Lots this morning and finally got a bunch of titles mentioned previously. I was in a hurry so just picked up titles I recognized from being mentioned here, although I am pretty sure there were some out not previously mentioned as being seen. One I remember is Once A Thief. I will try to go back tomorrow to check. They evidently are still putting these titles out, although seemingly 1 at a time.

I was able to get:

Mr. Sardonicus
The Mystic Masseur
Son of the Bride
Mission Kashmir
Dark Blue World
Haiku Tunnel
The Luzhin Defence
Desert Bloom
Eat a Bowl of Tea
Desert Blue
Vanya on 42nd Street.

Don't forget to visit the Big Lots "Buzz Club" coupon thread for a 20% off coupon. Good through February 3d.

This is to let everybody know that the coupon worked for me instore at a Big Lots I visited on Saturday (and fortunately it was a store which had restocked with a lot of different titles since I had first visited it a couple of weeks ago).

Initially when the clerk saw I had a coupon, she quickly said "We don't take coupons."

But when I pointed out that it was one of their own coupons, she said "OH. The Buzz Club," so she was familiar with the program.

She called the manager over for instructions on how to enter the coupon and gave me a 20% discount off the total. She was told to hit "employee discount" and then scan the coupon.

The coupon wouldn't scan (probably due to my crappy printer) so she entered in the number sequence from the coupon and - Voila! - I got $10.00 off the $49.99 worth of DVDs I was buying (23 titles) for a total of $39.99 + tax.

Thanks to docdoowop for the heads up on the coupon and to clappj for the link on the other thread to the club signup page!!

The Experiment
Facing Windows
Ignition
Innocence

About $1.60 each after using the 20% off coupon.

printerati 02-02-07 07:12 PM

The store closest to my house restocked, but not with anything I hadn't seen elsewhere. It's the only area store (including two in Kentucky) that has restocked, as far as I can tell.

Ken Cline 02-03-07 10:24 AM

I noticed at several stores they are putting out a bunch of new Echo Bridge titles. Some of these seem to be TV and "B" movies. The reviews on Echo Bridge's quality don't seem very good though.

Lokimok 02-10-07 07:59 PM

Went to my nearest store yesterday & saw that they had restocked since the 3rd. Nothing that hasn't been reported before, but a few that I hadn't seen at any of the 3 stores I've been checking (Trixie, Me Myself I, a Jerry Lewis movie, a Jim Brown...) They'd also gotten a case of $4.99 Canadian discs such as Broken Flowers, Sin City, & The Constant Gardener. Ended up buying nothing, but regret not picking up Broken Flowers. Went to a 2nd Big Lots today & found nothing of interest.

Also stopped at a Dollar General & found Last Orders for $3. This was the only OOP Columbia-TriStar title I saw (& one I never found at Big Lots). It's got an OCT. 2006 sticker over the bar code.

Just picked up:

The White Raven
London Suite - Neil Simon
Jackpot

Watched "The White Raven" and thought it was a very good movie...

Autolycus 03-07-07 11:52 AM

Just when I thought the Big Lots Sony/Columbia-Tristar deal was finally played out, I happened to go by the nearest Big Lots last night and found that they had added a batch of $2.00 titles.

Most of them were titles which had previously been seen at Big Lots elsewhere (but had for some reason never shown up at the stores in my area). Of those titles I picked up Mr. Sardonicus, Bon Voyage, The Code, The Mystic Masseur, Broken Wings, Tiptoes, Subway, and Secret Ballot.

Two titles I picked up which I had not previously seen as being at Big Lots were:

Passionada (2004)

The Matinee Idol/Frank Capra's American Dream (a 1928 silent film by Capra with a documentary about him).

Obviously, YMMV. These were the first additions to the DVD section at this particular Big Lots store in weeks.

Note to Ken Cline: These two titles should be emboldened on the master list and Trixie needs to be added.

kenbenobi 03-07-07 01:13 PM

Nice store, Autolycus. I went on Sunday during the 20% off sale, but mine didn't have much. I got the Canadian Brothers Grimm and My Big Fat Independent Movie for 3.99 each after the discount...

docdoowop 03-07-07 01:16 PM

That 20% off deal on Sunday was limited to the evening hours, which sucked.

chard31 03-07-07 03:32 PM

Oh, I picked up the Canadian release of "Broken Flowers" and the Anchor Bay release of "Dawn Of The Dead" at the local BL...

I can't seem to edit that post anymore, it comes up as an error.

Last week I picked up A very Long Engagement (Warner, 2 disc) for $4.99.

That is what the coupon said, but my store had flyers all over advertising 20% off ALL DAY 9am-9am on Sunday...

Just back from my BL circuit (Coon Rapids, Brooklyn Center, St. Louis Park stores), and *nothing* is new.

Autolycus 03-08-07 03:20 PM

I've also seen a smattering of Sony/Columbia TriStar titles in a DVD assortment which has shown up in the last few days at a couple of Dollar Generals in my area.

Dollar General has them priced at 2 for $6.00 (i.e. $3.00 each). Each had a round sticker on the back marked "Feb. 2007."

I picked up Sunshine State and Reptilian, both of which I'd never been able to get at Big Lots.

Other titles I remember: Joe and Max, Brother John, Big Shot's Funeral, The Best Of Charlie's Angels, Charlie's Angels: Undercover, I'm With Lucy, Ike: Countdown To D-Day (this one had never been at Big Lots), and Passionada (hadn't been at Big Lots until recently).

Unfortunately as seems true with all Dollar Generals, each store had the exact same titles in the assortment they had received, no variation.

So if even here in the boondocks of North Carolina I'm seeing a few new Sony titles here and there, there's hope that more of the previously unseen out of print/discontimued Sony titles from Ken Cline's master list may show up yet at Big Lots or Dollar General.

I have checked the 5 BLs in the whole of the Raleigh/Durham/Cary area a zillion times. Sadly, no Spider.

A shame indeed as it was already on my wishlist...now I'll have to pay for OOP prices. Madness.

While I was in Florida, I found "Spider" in the $5.99 bin at one of the GameStops...

BTW: I tried to watch it and it's a very slow and hard to watch movie...
Turned it off after 30 mins...

Are you a Cronenberg fan, Fiennes fan or just curious?
(just to see which elicits such a reaction!)

Jah-Wren Ryel 03-09-07 12:51 PM

FWIW, Spider is not much like The Fly - no sci-fi experiments gone wrong, no human-eating spiders. But it did feel a lot like A History of Violence. They are both about unlocking and freeing a man from a hidden past that still defines them.

Bill Geiger 03-09-07 09:38 PM

Saw Dawn of The Dead at one of the Big Lots I was just at. I picked up Desert Blue for $3.00. Might be an interesting movie. If I don't like it, hey, was on 3 bucks!

Not sure what the OOP prices are, but the Candian version is in print and can be had for about $15 US shipped. Not as good as $2 or $6, but it is an alternative.

Hmm, cheers. I do have to get the CA eXistenZ some day anyway. And possibly their Dead Ringers eventually, but I own it already (and I've already seen eXistenZ, I just want to own it...with actual features)

Modesto, CA

The two Modesto, CA stores are really drying up for most of the great titles discussed in this thread.

But....

Now they have a fresh supply of some of those Mill Creek Entertainment box sets for $6. I had previously purchased their "SciFi Classics 50 Movie MegaPack" and the "Black Action 10 Movie Pack" and was pleased with the video quality.

So today I picked up:

Burnt Rubber 20 Movie Pack (Hot Rod and Racing films)
Vampires & More! 20 Movie Pack

I left behind:

Mean Guns 20 Movie Pack (Italian & other 70's Westerns)
Hot Pursuit - The First Season (Court TV series)
Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Series (1954-1955)
150 Cartoon Classics (public domain toons)

docdoowop 03-13-07 08:14 AM

I'll be looking for these. I have the 50 movie packs "War Classics", "Dark Crimes" and "Mystery Classics"...and also the Sherlock Holmes box. Quality mirrors price, but these are great buys.

Are these the ones that have a logo or bug that pops up in the lower right corner every 5 minutes or so?

docdoowop 03-13-07 11:12 AM

Not on the early sets. I bought the recent "Ultimate TV Westerns" and "Very Best of One Step Beyond" boxes, and *they* do. However it's not intrusive and the frequency is maybe every 25-30 minutes.

docdoowop 03-13-07 01:50 PM

Just back from checking the St. Louis Park store for the above-mentioned Mill Creek boxes and no joy. *However*, a slew of $2.00 Columbia/Tri-Star titles were added. I bought most of them, all widescreen unless indicated:

"Baadasssss!" SE
"Borderline"
"Circus"
"Crush"
"The Governess" (FS)
"Home Room"
"Ike: Countdown To D-Day"
"Joe And Max"
"Just Looking"
"The Lady And The Duke"
"Le Dernier Combat"
"Me, You, Them"
"Murder In Greenwich" (FS)
"My Wife Is An Actress"
"Peep Show" (no indication, but since it's a short I expect FS)
"Returner"
"The Sea Is Watching"
"The Secret Lives Of Dentists" SE
"Sin"
"Sunshine State"
"Time And Tide"
"True Blue"
"Tube"
"Virtual Sexuality"

Arrrrghhh! I bought some of those used for $6 and up over the last few months. I guess I'll be stopping at BigLots on the way home.
