Forgot to mention. While browsing the Columbia/Tri-Star selection at the Coon Rapids BL this morning I had a choice: A $4 "previously enjoyed" copy of "Squid and the Whale" or a brand new one for $3.

lolitazz 11-22-07 07:19 PM

Also, there is a $10 off $50 purchase before 11:00am, Friday, Saturday & Sunday Interesting...

hilts 11-22-07 09:43 PM

Stopped at Big Lots just before closing today and saw a few of the Mill Creek 50-packs I had not seen before, priced at 13.00 - Horror, Science Fiction, Nightmare Worlds, Mystery Classics. Nothing else new today.

jpdude 11-22-07 09:54 PM

All i can ever find at our local Big Lots is a bunch of crap movies that nobody has ever heard of, and most all of what they have is used stuff that's obviously rewrapped.

Sixty mile round trip for nothing, except I picked up the two disc, 16 episode set of Richard Boone in "Medic" for $4.

Don't feel too badly, Doc...you weren't the only one. The wife & I made a trip (about 8 miles there) & discovered the save thing. We had a good laugh about it & then went across the street to Walgreens & bought 10 bags of M&M's for my Sunday School class of middle-schoolers (will add other goodies such as popcorn tins & a good book for their Christmas gift).

Will try again today (there are 3 Big Lots within a 50-mile radius where we live but don't know if it's worth the gas to visit all of them...unless we also stop at the other Target, Best Buy, CC, etc.). Anyway, thanks to this forum, I've already ordered online quite a few of the deals offered by the other stores.

docdoowop 11-23-07 09:49 AM

TexasDVDer 11-23-07 10:06 AM

I saw the Steve McQueen double feature. Among others I picked up the 1943 2-disc Batman serial. I got eight total. First time I've found any decent DVDs at my local Big Lots

The Valeyard 11-23-07 10:34 AM

Just got back from my nearest Big Lots. Picked up:

An Evening With Kevin Smith: Evening Harder
Blue Thunder: Special Edition
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - Special Edition
Closer
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

All were 2 bucks. They had a bunch of Lifetime Movies I thought about getting but decided to see how the rest of my day went first.

chris_sc77 11-23-07 10:56 AM

still no Batman today...
However i did finally find Steamboy and Crimson Rivers 2 for $2 a piece. Also I found The People Vs. Larry Flynt : Special Edition for only $2. I about shit when i saw that title there. I have never seen a good bargain for this one.

docdoowop 11-23-07 11:06 AM

OK guys....I've got extras of Batman, White Nights, Steamboy and a few others. Looking to trade for the McQueen 2fer.

TLeeTx2012 11-23-07 11:38 AM

Finally scored one of the Evening with Kevin Smith 2s this morning on my way into work. Grabbed it and a Blue Lagoon 2fer for a xmas gift. Still have one more Big Lots to check out on my lunch break which is coming up in 5 min.

JediJones 11-23-07 01:32 PM

My search was about 90% successful...

I hit 2 Big Lots in eastern PA yesterday and 4 more today. The only ones I couldn't find that I wanted were An Evening with Kevin Smith 2 and Casualties of War Extended Cut. Here's a list from the titles mentioned in this thread of what I found. Looks like I saw practically every title mentioned except for maybe 10 titles, unfortunately including 2 I wanted. I did pick up at least a dozen I wanted so this really turned out to be a sleeper that was the best Black Friday DVD deal of the year. I saw a XXX: Director's Cut (2 Disc) today as well as a regular XXX and the sequel.

Proglodite 11-23-07 07:21 PM

Either the Big Lots in Ashboro, NC was totally creamed this morning, or they were never given much inventory. I showed up around 11am and there were only a few discs left on a display that didn't look like it could hold very many in the first place. Angels Over Broadway (Rita Hayworth) would have been a good one if I didn't already have it. Only disc I wound up getting was The Squid and the Whale for $2...who knows when/if I'll get around to watching it. --Peter

JiM T 11-23-07 09:56 PM

Good grief, most of this was surprise to me. I haven't been paying very close attention to the BF deals this year because of my work, but I did manage to make it into a few stores. I agree that Big Lots was the best. I didn't even know the DVDs were $2. I about freaked when I saw "The Passenger" marked $3. "Squid and the Whale" was a nice surprise as well. It was another nice surprise when they all rang out a buck cheaper. Very cool. I'd love to find "Kevin Smith" and "Casualties of War" - maybe I'll try another location tomorrow. Even if it's not $2 anymore, it's still a good deal.

djskyler 11-24-07 01:30 AM

Modesto, CA

Couldn't get to my local Big Lots until evening, but I found it didn't matter. I had hoped some new titles would show up for BF, but no new DVD stock had been added since I last visited on Tuesday. :grumble:

Doc Moonlight 11-24-07 09:06 AM

I went to Big Lots on Thanksgiving thinking the $2 DVDs might be out. I asked and was told they would be out in the morning. I got there Friday morning at 6:30. There was no seperate table, but they did have some new stock in the racks. I was able to get the BATMAN Serial, the STEVE MCQUEEN SET, BEING JULIA and ROXANNE (which is going back, because it's full-screen).

lolitazz 11-24-07 09:49 AM

BL marketing ads were a success. People were going there just to see those DVDs. They were announcing those DVDs in the store. (I felt like telling them to shut up, at least until I finished my search)

I think BL should have brought more merchandise in my area. Only one store out of 8 around my area had enough titles in my opinion (not the best though)

Titles that I had not seen before in my area:
I'll do Anything
Connors War
Castle Keep
Crimson Rivers
Into thin Air
Mixed Nuts

basaro 11-24-07 02:25 PM

I was able to find 2 more copies of the Batman serials set, so if anyone if still out of luck, get in touch.

Today I picked up for myself:
The Prisoner
She Hate Me

^beware of Castle Keep, it is fullscreen.

Rumor has it that these titles are part of their Black Friday sale, so I'm wondering if these titles were even supposed to be put out yet. Clearly, a number of stores don't seem to care, but I did find it odd that an entire display (which was separate from their normal DVD display) just vanished. Rumor also has it that they will be priced at $2, as Autolycus discovered. I guess we'll find out next week.

My Black Friday Big Lots experience was pretty disappointing.

After seeing the Black Friday Big Lots ad and printerati's post (see above) about seeing boxes of new Sony titles, I had hoped to see a bunch of new stock at Big Lots on Black Friday.

No such luck.

The two local Big Lots I went to just pretty much had the same stock I'd seen before, discounted to $2.00.

After going by Circuit City at 5:45 AM and seeing that people were still standing outside in the cold in a very long line (when the store had opened at 5:00), I went on to the nearby Big Lots which was opening at 6:00 AM.

When I got there, there were about 25 people in line (all of whom seemed to be there just for the $79.99 DVD/VHS Dual Recorder).

I was the first to the DVD table in the front of the store but was disappointed to see that it was just the remnants of the selection I had seen there a couple of weeks ago with only a very few additional titles (only about 30-40 DVDs in all with price stickers of $2.00, $3.00, and even $4.00!). There were no Sony titles on the usual 4-sided media rack.

There was a big area cleared out in the corner of the table and I hoped that they just hadn't put out everything yet but my brother asked the store manager and he said that was all they had.

For $2.00, I got:

The Passenger

Savior (1998 - Dennis Quad)

Hollow Man 2

Battle Of The Brave (which I hadn't seen previously in our area)

Death Tunnel (a blind buy I'll probably regret - I see it has a score of 2.7 of 10 and scathing reviews on Internet Movie Database)

Pursued (2004 - Christian Slater)

The $3.00 titles automatically rang up as $2.00 at the register but the two $4.00 Sony titles I had still rang up as $4.00 [D.E.B.S.: Special Edition and The Confessor (aka "The Good Shepherd" 2004].

The clerk didn't seem willing to adjust the price without an argument. I had to get on back to Circuit City and didn't have time to argue about it so I put them back.

After leaving Circuit City, I went on to the nearby Big Lots at Monroe, NC which I hadn't checked in a while.

There I picked up:

D.E.B.S.: Special Edition (marked at $2.00 instead of $4.00 as it had been at the Charlotte store)

Nine Lives (2005)

Joyeux Noel

Dean Martin Double Feature

The Beautiful Country

Capote/In Cold Blood Double Feature

Castle Keep [Full Screen - Note that there is also an anamorphic widescreen DVD of this film which was released by Sony a few months after this full screen abomination, following complaints from customers, critics, and big-name film-makers like Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorcese who admire the film - one of the few instances I can recall where Sony has ever listened to complaints about their full-screen releases and actually done something about it (I guess it helps to have complaints from big shots like Scorcese and Spielberg).

It's conceivable that this widescreen DVD may also show up at Big Lots at some point.

The cover art is identical in every respect for both the WS and FS releases of Castle Keep so you'll have to look at the back of the box to see which version it is.

For $2.00, I went ahead and picked up the FS DVD as a "place-holder" in the collection until I find a WS copy at a decent price (plus I haven't seen the movie in years and just wanted to see it again).]

P.S.:
printerati, did your store put out the new display bin and boxes of Sony titles on Black Friday?

basaro 11-29-07 07:43 AM

I found some still left over stock of BF titles at the Amherst store last night, most notably 3 copies of Steamboy for $2 each. Also a couple copies of She Hate Me, Squid/Whale and some other stuff that has been mentioned.

Also a new restock of some anime, which I'm not into so I don't remember much other than Panda Z Vol.5 and Mobile Suit Gundam (Char's Counterattack) I think it was.

lolitazz 11-29-07 09:56 AM

There's nothing new lately. Only saw more copies of the $1 titles that have like 2 or 3 movies in them. (Frank Sinatra, cartoon DVDs)

If you spot s-CRY-ed Anime Legends Vol. 1 or Mars Daybreak Vols. 4 and 6, be sure to let me know! :)

There are still plenty of leftover BF titles around here, too. No one seems interested in The Squid And The Whale, because multiple copies are in every store I've visited. I have also noticed that some of the titles are priced at $2 instead of $3 now, and I even saw two copies of Being Julia at different prices.

Yeah, it was back on Friday morning. They filled the bin and left the rest of the boxes sitting open underneath the display. I went through all of them and didn't find anything new or of note. They have since removed the bin and thrown all of the BF titles on the rack with all of the other DVDs/software.

No s-CRY-ed, I still have that on my list to look for you. I think there were some MD titles, but I'll have to go back and see what they have. Probably won't be until Tuesday though, but I will probably stop at a different store before then and see what they have.

Autolycus 11-29-07 12:22 PM

Add "Nero" (2004, aka "Imperium: Nero," a 3-hour+ mini-series by the producers of "Augustus") to the list of $2.00 Sony titles seen at Big Lots.

jlynn33 11-29-07 11:45 PM

Can someone please pick me up the Blue Thunder & Body Double Special Editions? The big lots we have has less than nothing. I would appreciate it.

JiM T 11-30-07 12:27 AM

I think I've now officially hit every Big Lots in town, and most are just wiped out in terms of these (or any!) DVDs. Strangely, one out-of-the-way store still had DVDs practically falling off the shelves, with a few good ones peppered in. This was yesterday - I found a copy of "Steamboy" in that pile. Unfortunately, I cannot find "Body Double", "Casualties of War", or "Evening with Kevin Smith 2". :(

printerati 11-30-07 09:21 AM

I have an extra Kevin Smith 2 that I would trade for the 1943 Batman or The Three Burials of Meliques Estrada, which are scarce around here. I only saw them once, and passed on them like an idiot. I would also trade it for any of the anime titles I listed in post #584.

basaro, thanks for keeping an eye out for those. According to the anime bargains thread, Mars Daybreak 2, 3, and 5 are the only ones found in stores so far. I had to pick up 1 on Amazon Marketplace, and the prices on 4 and 6 are a bit more than I'm willing to pay at the moment.

Manzana 11-30-07 10:25 AM

I went twice to my FYE this week and saw the same couple Kevin Smith 2 DVDs sitting in the same $4.88 boxes each time. I guess it depends on one's location and who's looking. I chose to pass on Kevin Smith 2 because I don't care for gratuitous profanity. I never saw any copies of Casualties of War, Body Double, Caine Mutiny, or Bridge over the River Kwai during this sale.

basaro 11-30-07 11:16 AM

I have not seen Body Double or Blue Thunder since before BF.

I still have extras of:
Batman (The Complete 1943 Movie Serial Collection)
Capote/In Cold Blood (Double Feature)
Dean Martin Double Feature (Who Was That Lady? & How To Save A Marriage (And Ruin Your Life) )
A River Runs Through It (Deluxe Edition)
Steamboy (Director's Cut)
The Steve McQueen Boxset (Baby, The Rain Must Fall & The War Lover)

Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything BL I would trade for at the moment, but it can't hurt to ask. Please check out my exchange thread, and make offers if anyone wants these.
Otherwise, they are getting returned to the store in the next week or two.

printerati 11-30-07 04:57 PM

Several new titles showed up today, at a new price point: $4.90. This is a good price for some of these titles, and not much of a deal for others. I didn't have anything to write with, so this list is from memory. I am forgetting more than a few. Most are Paramount "widescreen collection" titles, with a couple from PBS Home Video:

- The Tuxedo
- Paycheck
- The Perfect Score
- War of the Worlds: Special Collector's Edition (1953)
- I Married a Monster from Outer Space
- Match Point
- Enduring Love
- Flesh and Bone
- Fathers and Sons
- Foul Play
- Best Defense
- The Gambler
- Dare to Repair: A Do-It-Herself Guide to Home Improvement (PBS)
- The American (PBS)

They also had several copies of the Yu-Gi-Oh: The Complete First Season 6-disc set for $13, if you or your children are into that sort of thing. This is apparently out of print, and used copies start at over $45 on Amazon Marketplace (although a number of sellers mention a tin packaging, which this does not have).

iamthepaco 12-01-07 03:26 PM

titles with no security stickers

I wanted to let you all know that the dvd's from sony with no security stickers or those that apear to be used are in fact new.

These have been "re-worked"

What this means is some of the cases break inside during transport or the discs come loose, so this product is repaired checked for damage and repackaged so you dont get a bunk disc or broken packaging

thx thepaco

basaro 12-04-07 01:58 PM

As mentioned by printerati, a new price point:

$4.90 (mostly Paramount titles)
Collateral
Another 48 Hrs.
Rosemary's Baby
Paycheck
Flesh And Bone
Perfect Score
Match Point
New Years Day
Bad News Bears Go To Japan
The Rainmaker (1956)
Man In The vault
North Dallas Forty
Fathers and Sons
Keep The Faith Baby
Head Of State
Best Defense
Ace High
Walk The Talk
Win A Date With Tad Hamilton

Also $4.90, I Picked up:
Enduring Love
Black Rain (Special Collector's Edition)

Also saw used/repack copies for $4 of:
T3(fullscreen)
Enron: Smartest guys in the room (looks like it's repackaged in a blockbuster style case with security bar removed - yuk!)
A Very Long Engagement (ditto package as above)

Anime was a bust, Mars Daybreak were all copies of volumes previously found, no copies of 4 or 6 found yet. All the copies of Steamboy are now gone too.

moklerman 12-08-07 04:15 AM

Did anyone find any copies of Cowboy Bebop other than volume 3?

basaro 12-08-07 07:54 AM

Haven't seen any Bebops in a while.
Yesterday I stopped at the Derry store, and the only new restock was a bunch of triple features for $1. One of these had BMX Bandits (w/ Nicole Kidman) on it! I passed on everything though, didn't seem to be anything worth watching, even though I've always wanted to see Bandits. Nothing beats Rad! though ;)

bigjim25 12-08-07 11:25 PM

Add The Brady Bunch in the White House & Growing Up Brady, which I picked up, to the Paramount titles.

Crud. I bought AVLE last week, and totally missed the blockbuster style case with no proper security stickers. I guess it's going back. I almost didn't buy it, since $4 is expensive for Big Lots. I'm definitely not buying used crap...

gfoots 12-09-07 12:05 AM

Stopped into Big Lots today and found the below priced at $4.00

East of Eden - 2 disc
Strangers on a Train - 2 disc
Rebel Without a Cause - 2 disc
The Producers
Exorcism of Emily Rose

I remember seeing North By Northwest, Rosemary's Baby, Doom and a Carter Family PBS thing.

They also had a lot of "Previously Enjoyed" discs in Blockbuster style cases marked $4.00 and $4.90.

taperdude 12-09-07 12:12 AM

CB Vol 6 also available

Vol 6 was available a couple o' months back, although BF shoppers probably snagged any that might have been left.

The BEST SESSIONS 5.1 audio remix collection was also available back then, but I assume you were talking about the original single disc DVD's.

GOOD LUCK!!!
