I have Peep Show. Its kinda steep for something so short, but I really enjoyed it.

coville 01-05-07 02:00 PM

Didn't see Salvages listed yet. Found it yesterday for $4. Bought and watched Peep Show. It was enjoyable but it's hard to say if it was $2 worth of enjoyment. :)

Actually, I saw that one as well for $2, but passed on it because I didn't recognize the studio that released it (Maverick?). Also, the artwork makes it look like a public domain title.

I found a real gem there today for $2, a dvd I had been looking for for awhile. "Guilty as Charged" its a real campy cult classic, stars Rod Steiger as a vigilante who sets up his own electric chair to give violent criminals who have slipped through the system on a technicality the death sentence he feels they should have recieved. Isaac Hayes plays a great supporting part as Steiger's assistant. Also stars Lauren Hutton and Heather Graham.

Brent L 01-05-07 08:28 PM

Cool, that sounds a lot like the very first episode of of Tales From the Crypt, "The Man Who Was Death".

If I saw it in Big Lots, I'd pick it up for sure.

printerati 01-05-07 11:58 PM

Picked up a few more at the Tri-County area Big Lots for $2 each:

- Happy Times
- I Capture The Castle
- Pauline and Paulette
- Son of the Bride
- Twin Falls Idaho

This location also had Startup.com and one of the Harry Potter films for $3.99 each.

docdoowop 01-06-07 09:44 AM

After coming up nearly dry at my closest location, I did a 60 mile loop of two other Twin City stores. I bought these, ALL $2 titles. Thanks for keeping this thread going...I have a feeling some areas of the country may be seeing these arrive at different times. And a salute to Lokimok for posting the OOP title list, upthread!

Band of the Hand
Bon Voyage

Commandos Strike at Dawn

Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round

Which stores did you find them at. My local big lots never has anything good.

docdoowop 01-06-07 11:11 AM

I found them at the Coon Rapids and Brooklyn Center stores....about 10 miles apart but a long way from Minnetonka. My usual St. Louis Park store is always a dry hole for DVDs.

Logic 7 01-06-07 12:11 PM

Dark Blue World is a great movie

I guess I should go check it out again. They had nothing there the last time I went.

Harold Chasen 01-06-07 04:10 PM

A note to the unsuccessful searchers- I went to a Big Lots a couple days ago and checked the usual stash - nothing interesting, same old stuff. But before I left I happened by a different area and found a stash that included many of the titles people have been listing here. So it might be worth checking around the rest of the store if yours is looking sparse.

Quatermass 01-06-07 05:45 PM

I went by my nearby (less than a mile away) BigLots again and found a couple more, but I think it's more likely that I overlooked them last time rather than a restocking, because most of the stuff was in the exact same spot as before. I got "Dead Heat on a Merry Go Round" and "Happy Times". I guess I'm going to have to check back there every couple of days. I'm tempted to drive to other stores in the city like docdoowop.

Harold Chasen 01-06-07 08:34 PM

I just went by a different store and found a nice pile. The most expensive stuff seems to be 4.99, but most were either $2 or $3. BTW, for those picking up Subway, it's a great film, but I believe the edition at Big Lots is the ultra-crappy release, at least the one I saw. There's a much better one out - it has a different cover. Anyway, here's my list:

Dick
Sin City
The Big Picture
Happy Times
World Traveler
I'm With Lucy
The Front
Desert Bloom
Nina Takes A Lover
A Man Called Sledge
The Secret Life of Dentists
Me Without You
Le Dernier Combat
The Sea Is Watching
Dragon Inn
Kicked in the Head

Thanks to everyone for the heads up!

zombeaner 01-06-07 10:12 PM

Mine never have anything that good, I'll check again tomorrow. I'd like to have Dragon Inn and Ms. Sardonicus.

printerati 01-07-07 12:00 PM

Finally found Le Dernier Combat and Das Experiment at the store across the river in Newport, KY. I also grabbed Mr. Sardonicus.

I don't expect to find Tube or Monsieur Ibrahim at this point, as I never made a habit of going to Big Lots before this sale, and don't expect to start now unless there's an influx of new titles that aren't on any of the lists in this thread. I never did find At Last The 1948 Show, either. :(

Picked this one up today based on your recommendation! (I better like this or you owe me 2.00! :D I was going to pass on it)

Also got:

7.99
Gun
Cracker
(saw Mike Hammer too, but already bought it)

3.00
Hellcats of the Navy

2.00
Peep Show (what the heck -you have to admire the guts of releasing a 9-minute film by itself)
Happy Birthday To Me
The Experiment
World Traveler

All blind buys except Happy Birthday. Pretty slim pickings for traveling to four Big Lots. Two more south that I'll try after work tomorrow when I'm in the area. I'm in Austin, TX.

sataniko 01-07-07 04:40 PM

Went to another Big Lots and picked up:

El Lado Oscuro Del Corazon 2 $4
Last Orders $3
Naked Lies $3
Nina Take A Lover $3
Salvajes $4
Twin Falls Idaho $2

moklerman 01-07-07 05:42 PM

I'm still looking for Lip Service if anyone wants to help me out. In the meantime, I picked up:

$2.00
Jackie Chan: Snake in the Eagle's Shadow(WS)
The Pact of Silence
Subway(the WS Columbia release to replace the FS copy I purchased earlier)
CD Andy's (Griffith) greatest laughs
$3.00
A Man Called Sledge
Divorce American Style
Angels Over Broadway
Music in My Heart

$4.99
Sin City (WS w/Marv slipcover)

I mentioned this in an earlier post. If you want Subway they do have it at BL, they have both releases. Get the Sony $2 one like this:

Not the crappy $1 one:

I had the first one on my hands and didn't buy it...

Grrr...

The BL that had it is too far away to goto for one dvd...

This is the only version I have seen at the stores around here. I thought for sure this was the crappy version, based on the artwork. Still undecided on picking it up, though.

FangsFirst 01-09-07 01:35 PM

I believe these films remain unmentioned:

Tully ($4.99)
Three Businessmen (Alex Cox directed -- $3.29...don't ask me!)

still no sodding Spider by Cronenberg...

EarlB 01-09-07 05:48 PM

I am so envious of you guys. My sole Big Lots has none of the titles listed here - in fact, it doesn't have any DVDs at all.

Guess I'll have to pony up full retail $ for At Last the 1948 Show and Do Not Adjust Your Set.

creekdipper 01-09-07 09:17 PM

Just a thought about the $2 movies if you're undecided about some of them (and there are many great titles offered)...you can always trade them in at Blockbuster & get at least $2 credit in most cases. If you have a franchise store nearby, you can probably get $4-$5 for them. Last summer/fall I cleaned out a bunch of cheap DVDs that were slightly imperfect (light scratches, etc.) plus some cheaper movies from pawn shops, garage sales, etc. I got a bunch of credit from the franchise stores & ended up spending all of it during the latest 4 for $20 sale. I was very pleased with the results...got lots of harder-to-obtain foreign & indie films plus some newer bestsellers for minimal cash layout (for instance, I was able to get four $5 titles using $20 credit obtained from titles that probably cost me around $10...making the "actual" price of the movies around $2.50 each + tax). So it's hard to go wrong with these $2 titles.

That's good to know - how can you tell if a store is a franchise store?

Brent L 01-10-07 04:41 PM

$2.00

printerati 01-10-07 05:25 PM

If anyone finds Tube or Monsieur Ibrahim, let me know...I'd be willing to work out a trade if there are any Big Lots titles you can't find locally.

Good question (& I don't have a good answer). None of the 7 Blockbusters near us are franchise stores; however, about 100 miles away in Knoxville are 3 franchise stores (out of a total of about 7-8 Blockbusters). They usually have large banners advertising "Get at least $4 for Trade-Ins"). They also sometimes have different sales; ironically, I find it better to trade in used DVDs at the franchise stores & then use the credit at the corporate stores. Sorry...know this doesn't help much (when all else fails, just ask the clerk what type of store).

Incidentally, I've found several good stores that not only have their used DVDs in better condition but also have really friendly staff who understand the importance of checking condition, etc. & have been most helpful & pleasant. Then there are the couple of stores with employees who seem to regard waiting on customers to be an intrusion on their discussions of their relationship problems, makeup disasters, etc. You know the type...the ones who roll their eyes, sigh heavily, and say "You know that these have a 30-day guarantee" whenever you ask to check the condition before buying. I assume they don't mind driving 10 or more miles to return items that don't work, even if they have to repeat the process when the 2nd item is even worse. Makes you want to say, "If only you were getting paid to do this job" when they act so put out for helping (even though you go at an extremely slow time when there are no other customers in the store & the clerk is just standing at the counter chatting).

My Big Lots always seems to have a terrible selection of DVDs when I go to look. Yesterday, the only movie I even recognized was "Volunteers" for $5. I had to laugh at that price, since I got it at the DDD sale for .59¢ in November, lol.

Has anyone found that they (Big Lots) have restocked any stores that you previously found some titles at? Within the last week and including any new titles that weren't there before or is this likely a one time thing?
