Cello was in the same place as justbarelymovin described at my local Walmart. I picked up R-Point and The Heirloom. I might go back for Abnormal Beauty and Phone since SBJ vouched for them. Out of this crop, I've seen Marebito and Koma. Both are decent. I don't really have a desire to see either one again, but I think Marebito is the better of the two. I really wish Spider Forest was part of this sale. I've been wanting that one for a while now, but I've always wanted to pay less than $18.xx. At my Wal-Mart they had Oldboy for $13.xx in the regular DVD section. Might be a good deal for someone that doesn't want to take the plunge on the 3-disc set coming up soon.Originally Posted by justbarelymovin

R-Point is probably my favorite of the lot (I own the R3 release, though, so I don't really need to pick it up).
From what I've heard Memento Mori is supposed to be really good. Of the others, they're probably mostly mediocre. I picked up all the Korean ones I didn't already have so I can watch them with my mom. I may go back and try to get some of the others sometime soon since I doubt I'll find them cheaper later.
I, too, wish Spider Forest would've been included, along with a few others... I noticed that some of the ones I already have weren't included, so I'm glad I have those.

If you're afraid of a blind buy, you can watch it this Sunday night at midnight(technically Monday morning) on the Sundance Channel. They've been showing these flicks every Sunday at midnight for a while now and Memento Mori is on this week.Originally Posted by justbarelymovin

Wow, really? That's awesome. Well, I did happen to purchase MM because it's a Korean flick (my mom likes to watch Korean movies since she doesn't get to hear a lot of Korean in the states). But thanks!Originally Posted by Sweet Baby James

Justbarely - some of the best movies of the last decade have come out of Korea. Tartan's been focusing on the action and horror genres, of which Tale of Two Sisters and Memento Mori are top-notch in their own unique ways, but there are at least one or two stand-outs in almost every genre. Often you can pick up the Hong Kong releases of the Korean movies from a place like YesAsia for about what these Tartan's are selling for, even including shipping.
One good place to get fairly educated reviews of korean film is http://www.koreanfilm.org/ - the site owner is a westerner who has been living there for a long time and has a pretty good sense of perspective, I think he may even have married a local girl.

I think I'm going back for Phone, Memento Mori, and possibly Cello today.

I would not recommend Spider Forest at all, a very lackluster film. Hell, I'll sell one of you my copy if you're desperate for it.
If I can find the display, I might pick up a few. I'd probably be interested in Doppelganger since I've been trying to see more of Kurosawa's films.

For anyone who hasn't been able to find these DVDs, my WM had them in the Halloween section instead of electronics with the other DVDs. You might want to check there. Picked up 10 titles from the list.

As far as Asian horror goes, I thought that they were both well made and fairly enjoyable(especially Ab-Normal Beauty). As I mentioned to JBM, the Sundance Channel has been airing these movies every Sunday at midnight(Memento Mori is on tap for this week). I know that they have aired Phone and Ab-Normal Beauty in the past. If you're afraid of a blind buy, you can always buy them and leave them sealed until you get the chance to watch them on the Sundance Channel.

No luck here in Venice FL. Hopefully they put out the display next week.
Is it a big cardboard display like they put out for the new big releases? Or just a small endcap thing? Just so i know what I'm looking for.

I went to another WM here in the Detroit, MI area and still haven't seen any of these, not even in the Halloween section. Although I did go back to the previous WM I had visited and saw the $4.88 DVD's in the Halloween section at that store, but no Tartans. Originally Posted by roachie17

Thanks! Actually, pretty much every time I type in "X korean review" into Google, koreanfilm.org pops up, so I use that site regularly as a reference as to whether or not I truly want to invest in an import DVD. I really enjoy the reviews over there and prefer them to most other sites (this doesn't include DVD Talk, of course). I've actually gotten some pretty good deals on import DVDs (NOT bootlegs - I'm very picky), but haven't in fact ordered from Yes Asia yet. The releases they get overseas are ridiculously cooler compared to ours, it seems.Originally Posted by Jah-Wren Ryel

I did actually look in one Halloween section, and didn't find Tartans there, but a good suggestion for others who might not have had luck elsewhere.

I'm still sitting on the fence for a few titles... May just give in this weekend when I make a trip out to BB. We'll see. Good luck to others!

I just found the display at the Wal-mart in Clarksville, IN this morning. My big question is can anyone recommend 1 or 2 as blind buys? I am a big horror fan. I have been wanting to sample some of these to see if I would like them. I almost bought Cello. Is it a good blind buy? Any of them? Thanks!

Well, here's my review of Cello. It's not bad. If you watch it coupled with the commentary (afterwards), then I think you get the optimum viewing experience. For $8.88, I think it's worth it, otherwise, I can only really recommend a rental.Originally Posted by NeilJ

My highest recommendation would be for R-Point. Many of these titles have been reviewed on DVD Talk as a reference. Memento Mori gets a particularly good rating for the R1 Tartan release.

If anyone is looking for the 2 Disc Unrated "A Tale Of Two Sisters" and can't find it at Circuit City, FYE.com has it on sale for $12.99. Linky. Get another 10% off using the Mastercard coupon MCJULY2006. Order $25+ to get free shipping.
Or, pick it up for $12.99 at FYE B&M after using this $3 off Visa coupon
Correction: Looks like the copy I picked up at FYE B&M was mis-labeled as the single disc for $15.99.

what does the display look like?
is it small endcap thing...or a big display like their big new releases come in?
and do they switch out their displays on Sundays or Tuesdays?

I picked up R-Point and Ab-Normal Beauty. I was hoping Tetsuo would be in there. I may pick up Cello and Phone. I also don't have Whispering Corridors or Wishing Stairs yet, though I did win a copy of Memento Mori a few months ago. Heirloom looks interesting too, and possibly Doppelganger.
*edit* Oh, and Acacia, too.

I think the price difference more than compensates for the lack of slipcover. While slipcovers are nice, they add no new information... I think it's worth the $4-12 price difference. You're still getting the DVD itself with all the same content - I don't see how that qualifies as sucking.Originally Posted by xage
They suck.. it doesnt come with a Slipper Case. No wonder why it was sold that cheap
As for the display - It's in a cardboard setup with four sides, much like the new releases are laid out. When I went back today (I decided I didn't REALLY need any more DVDs), it was in disarray. For some reason, they mucked it all up, and it's totally unorganized - really hard to find stuff. I could tell that they had much to do with it because they moved the Tartan stuff to the opposite side of the display, and there were little stickers noting the prices for specific ones... It was a poor decision because they were all just mixed up along with the $4.88 DVDs.

Slip covers are a waste - they are just an anti-theft device dressed up to look pretty.

Picked up Wishing Stairs and Whispering Cooridors to complete the trilogy since I already had Memento Mori. I also grabbed Marebito. I might get R-Point at a later date.

Just checked the Derby, CT location without luck. Walking the aisles of WM on a Sunday, swiveling your head from side to side in search of a display, is certainly not much fun. I think that I'll watch Memento Mori on Sundance tonight to see if it's worth owning(that's the title that I wanted the most).
