Okay.

Cinemaddiction 04-04-06 01:46 AM

"Videdrome" for me, after a couple hours of deliberation. I'm too used to pawn shop prices.

Picked up Louis Malle set, The Vanishing, and Walkabout.

Ron G 04-04-06 09:05 PM

After toying with the idea of spending close to $240, I settled for Wild Strawberries and the Andrzej Wajda boxset.

I think it's more brand loyalty than it is to do with actual spine numbers.

I also highly recommend Olmi's I Fidanzati if you don't already have it.

Not sure if I'll be buying anything, myself. I'm in the process of seriously thinning out my swollen DVD collection, since between Netflix, Nicheflix and loaner discs from friends, I don't really spend a lot of time rewatching stuff. There are some Bergman discs I'd like to pick up, though...

kenbuzz 04-05-06 07:43 PM

Dear DDD:

I hate you guys. I really, really hate you guys. Isn't it enough that I have close to 100 DVDs still in their shrink wrap, begging to be watched? No, you have to go and have a Criterion sale, testing my will power.

I resist, but you know I'm weak. You've got the stuff, I want, no, I need another hit. Please, Mr. DDD man, sell me another half dozen great movies at cheap prices so I have to start thinking of buying ANOTHER DVD rack to help support my habit.

So I come back to you, begging to let you sell me more titles. I follow the link at the top of this thread -- DENIED! No, I don't want to buy the Bob Newhart Show, where are the sweet, tasty Criterions?!? Oh no, did I miss the sale. I start to sweat. I begin to consider panic. I go to your homepage.... THERE! I see the tiny little ad, beckoning to me of sales of Criterions. My fix! I click, I go to the page. YES! There they are, the tiny, beautiful little icons, beckoning me to click, to add to my cart, to BUY!

You suck, you know that don't you. ;)

F FOR FAKE (CRITERION) $ 21.97 1 $ 21.97
VIDEODROME (CRITERION) $ 21.97 1 $ 21.97
THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (CRITERION) $ 23.97 1 $ 23.97

At least I had the willpower to delete A NIGHT TO REMEMBER (CRITERION) before I hit sale. At least I have a SHRED of my dignity still with me.

Now, when will the UPS man show up, I wonder.

By the way, the non-Newhart Criterion sale link is:

DDD has had these ridiculous sales for weeks now. First it was yet another MGM buy 2 get 1 free, then it was the MGM box sets, then the Sony 5.98s, the Criterions, and now the Buena Vistas...I feel unclean with all of these unopened discs.

AmonTwin 04-05-06 08:11 PM

Okay. I am torn between Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Young Mr. Lincoln and the two Olmi's - I Fidanzati and Il Posto. I need to limit it to two of these four. Which, in your humble opinion(s), do you recommend? Anybody....

My personal recommendations are Ali and Il Posto. Both were fantastic films, but also get high marks for presentation and special features. Il Posto has one of the best restorations I've seen from Criterion resulting in stunning black and white photography. Ali is just an excellent around package.

Ali is one of my absolute favorite films, ever. I highly recommend it.
