hmm, I tried to transfer credit from my value card to my blockbuster account so that I could do the $5 gift card deal but I was denied. the employee said that he couldn't get it from the value card to the store computer so I told him I'd like to just buy a $50 gift card but he said the free $5 gift card was for cash purchases only, he was rather persistant about this. anyone know the deal(official blockbuster stance?)? I'd hate to exploit blockbuster but I'd also hate to miss out on a legitimate deal. thanks in advance.

I hope this is true since Harry Potter is coming soon also. I hated paying them about $6 too much for Aladdin but did since I have to use my credit on something.

I had no problem using both a Value Card and store credit to purchase the $50 gift cards (the ones you can use online) and get the free $5 gift card both times. This is in NYC. Too bad you guys are getting resistance.
Of course, one of the two times, they charged me for the "free" $5 gift card, and lucky I looked at the receipt before I left the store and had it corrected.
Unfortunately, my BBV is selling Shrek 2 for $19.99, not $15.99. Maybe they'll get on board to the discounted new releases eventually.

and I intend to make all the telephone calls that need to be made to remedy this problem. If you don't like it, you know what you can do with your opinion.
I had no problems doing it in Chicago. (converting value for gift and getting the $5 bonus).

My BBV had Party Monster (new/sealed) for only $5.99, which I thought was a good deal... Unfortunately, I just converted my value card money to a $50 gift card the day before that deal started. That sucks!

Which store did you go to in Chicago? I went to the one on Western and Roscoe and they wouldn't do it.

Geez, I must have a great Blockbuster Manager because, not only did he have no problem getting my Value Cards onto the 6016 . . . he created the Giftcard right down to the penny (I had already purchased two DVDs in-store, thus there was 12.13 remaining on one of the Value Cards). That was the San Pablo, CA store, if anyone is curious. I'd uh . . . go there during the week, however. The weekend staff is clueless. And rude.
Gee, why does that remind me of Columbia House?

1. There are already BBV clerks and managers who have already seen this thread. Just go back and re-read this thread to confirm. So it's not like there is a big secret about anything as you seem to imply.
2. Also, what "loophole" are you talking about? Converting BBV value cards to the online gift cards is not necessarily a loophole. Have you seen a policy that prohibits the online gift cards? Most of the country is doing it. However, there are some BBVs that are resistant for whatever reason (lack of training, lack of imagination, too lazy, etc.). Accordingly, I am going to find out why some stores allow this and others don't.
3. By elevating my concerns, I am not "spoiling" it for the other members, such as yourself, from converting to online gift cards.
Plenty of time (and discussion) has already elapsed to make your conversions.
4. DVDTalk is not an "underground" website. You make it sound like I have "squealed" to management that this forum exists. Most of the online retailers advertise and have folks who look at this website, and actually participate in these discussions (among others that come to mind are Best Buy, Digital Eyes and Deep Discount). As stated previously, BBV clerks and managers have also contributed to this specific thread.
5. I am delighted to hear that you had no problems with this issue in Chicago. But that knowledge does not help me with converting my $1,200.00 in value cards where I live.

I've been on this board for 4 years, and I have never seen Blockbuster corporate be able to come down positively on behalf of somebody, especially if it is a franchise store. Corporate can do things like change pricing systems, etc. but they cannot force stores to change their policies. Calling up and down the chain ain't going to get you anywhere..
What corporate can and has done though is change promotions negatively (i.e. stop a promotion)

Found a couple good trade-ins at different stores:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Criterion)
Blues Brothers CE (OOP)
I am running out of recent releases I want to round out 2 for $20 deals, since I keep finding one really good DVD for $14.99 or so (or TV sets for much more). Have already picked up Bubba Ho-Tep, Hellboy, Butterfly Effect, Kill Bill V 2, City of God, and The Cooler.
Finally decided on:
50 First Dates
13 Going on 30
Hopefully, Eternal Sunshine will be on the PVD shelves soon, since I can't get that from Columbia House.

Used some of the trade-in credit today:
Picked up my special order of Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol. 2, which was pre-paid at $29.99
Also got them to price-match BestBuy prices for the new releases of Gone With the Wind box ($27.99) and the Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection ($42.99). I sold the four old OOP Marx Brothers discs last year for a lot more money, so I was happy to see this new set.
As far as the price-matching in this store, one manager won't do it, and another says it's still OK. Needless to say, I try to go in when the good one is there.

I asked about ordering through the store instead of online and they wanted $69.99 for the 6 disk Hammer box set (online they had it at $58, amz was $54, DDD wa s$48) the Space Ghost 1&2 and ATHF3 (SG2 and ATHF3 are out next week) were $29.99 ($22.99 on their site) so I guess I'll just order them from the website. I transfered my credit to gift cards already anyway (to get the $5 for $50 in GC purchase for an extra $20)

I've mostly been spending my credit on the 2 for $20 deal, too. Last night I got a pretty good haul (all used):
The Rock Criterion
For All Mankind Criterion
The Hidden Fortress Criterion
...And God Created Woman Criterion
A Night to Remember Criterion
I picked up Man on Fire to round it out, and also picked up a new Trainspotting SE.
I'm still wondering why someone would (unknowingly?) dump these movies for $8 a pop. Times must've been real tough.
