It is so cool to see so many people getting great deals on box set, but I have yet to find any :(. Did anybody in the Dallas area have any luck with box set?

dfinney 10-27-04 05:15 PM

I'm a believer! Picked up the Sopranos season 2 box (along with Scarface) in the 2 for $20 deal today. I'd been stopping at each Blockbuster I'd seen but haven't yet gone out of my way looking for them, figuring it would just be a waste of time. But now...

MJKTool 10-27-04 05:19 PM

I've gotten about $300 in trades so far. Plan to do some more weeding out of titles before this promotion expires. Only items I've picked up so far are the new Grand Theft Auto & Aladdin. I'm very selective on what I buy on dvd now, so I will definetly wait as there is nothing else out there I really want right now.

Hey Dabaomb was it embarressing walking into BlockBuster with Gigli?

JuryDuty 10-27-04 05:26 PM

Those box sets are impressive...I'm going to have to run to Blockbuster!

I don't understand why some of you are finding low cost season sets but not buying them because you're not interested. Why not buy them and sell them on ebay?

I just found a mint copy of Flash Gordon at my Blockbuster for $10, which I promptly sold for $50 on ebay. You can make good money on these if you're willing to do a little auctioning...

Blockbuster Q3 disappoints

10:36 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 27, 2004

By MARIA HALKIAS / The Dallas Morning News

Blockbuster Inc. swung to a third quarter loss that was far below what Wall Street was expecting as weakness in the movie rental business persists.

The Dallas-based company also said Wednesday that its president and chief operating officer Nigel Travis is resigning at the end of this year and chairman and chief executive officer John Antioco said he signed a new five-year agreement.

Blockbuster recorded a non-cash charge of $1.50 billion, or $7.84 per share after tax, to write down goodwill and other assets, resulting in a net loss of $1.42 billion, or $7.82 a share, in the third quarter ended Sept. 30.

Excluding the impact of the charges, adjusted net income was $3.4 million, or 2 cents per share, compared with net income of $63.7 million, or 35 cents, in the same quarter last year.

Analysts expected third quarter earnings of 12 cents a share, according to Thomson First Call survey of eight analysts.

Worldwide same-store rental sales fell 6.3 percent and U.S. same-store rentals fell 7.4 percent. Total revenue rose 1.8 percent to $1.41 billion.

Blockbuster chairman and CEO John Antioco said the company accelerated its spending to support its new online rental subscription business and other new ventures while the movie rental business continued to deteriorate.

This month Blockbuster was split off from media conglomerate Viacom Inc. The biggest movie rental chain has been trying to transform itself into a renter and retailer of movies and video games both new and used. At the same time, competition from cheaper DVDs sold by discounters Wal-Mart and Target and consumer electronics chains such as Best Buy continues to hurt the company.

Blockbuster warned that its profits in the fourth quarter and full year would decline significantly.

I was soooo ashamed :(

Seriously, it was no problem. I bought it for $7.99 which was basically a free rental. The movie wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It definitely had some terrible dialogue but J-Lo is hot so it wasn't all bad. When I took it back, the clerk was like please no, we have tons of these and we can't get rid of them. Got back $8 so I made a penny.

dollfins1 10-27-04 09:50 PM

tried a different blockbuster today.
made out pretty good.
using only credit from my trade-ins, found these gems in the pv 2 for $20 bin, all are in original cases w/ inserts, discs in nice condition:

magnolia (2 disc)
punch drunk love (2 disc)
dreamcatchers (yeah, i know its not a gem but i need it for my steven king collection and refuse to pay msrp for it)
and
all in the family the complete first season

most of their dvds were in those funky cases so i was pretty satisfied to find these.

Stangman68 10-27-04 10:57 PM

Looks like my local store broke street date on the new versions of Dazed and Confused (snatched up the only copy they had) and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Didn't see any of the 2-packs though. YMMV. :)

For me its just not worth the effort to go through the trouble of reselling things on ebay. I'm not into DVD collecting to make money :)

Sometimes, it's just nice to leave it for someone else, y'know? Unless it's an out-of-print disc that I'd be MAD to pass over, I don't need the extra bob THAT much.

Bruce_S 10-28-04 12:27 AM

There's a Game Rush store located in Wilsonville and it sells hardware. It's simaliar to Game Crazy of Hollywood Video. With the good news of the PSP pricing this week. I'm willing to wait for it now. I'm not planning to purchase any dvds anytime soon since Blu-Disc and HD-DVD are coming out w/the PS3 and Xbox 2 respectively. The specs of these machines are gonna to be by next summer. And rumors has it Xbox 2 is planning to its release for 2005 holiday rush.

Anybody else break $1,000? I wish they sold computer equipment there!

DJ_Longfellow 10-28-04 04:15 PM

I have $270 in credit. I think I have about 3 more movies to trade in. I got in on some pretty good GAMES trade in at GameRush....so I just kept adding my credit up.

I think I may buy some more games or save my credit and buy an XBOX 2 there eventually....we will see

MJKTool 10-28-04 05:09 PM

Anybody else getting strange looks from employees whenever you go in to trade?

LOL...that's hillarious, but I agree...I might sell all 804 DVDs if they did!

mean100000 10-28-04 07:07 PM

any member seen any boxsets at any houston stores? thanks.

elwood49 10-29-04 07:47 AM

Picked up: Casablanca SE, A Bug's Life SE, The Royal Tenenbaums Criterion, Eternal Sunshine, Singin' in the Rain SE, Memento LE, The Big Lebowski, Spirited Away, The Usual Suspects SE, and Gone with the Wind 4-disc (they broke the street date on this one) with my $216 credit from junk that I never watch.

Funny thing is I traded 27 single disc releases and got 10 titles that total 19 discs back! So as far as actual disc count and entertainment value, it's pretty close to an even trade. This is one of the best deals ever for DVD bargains (It makes me think of the "old days" of Reel.com freedvd and freedvd2 coupons and 800.com 3 for 1)!

RockStrongo 10-29-04 09:46 AM

I traded in about 33 titles and got $264.

I bought giftcards online and purchased the following....

Online -
MIB: Superbit
MIB2: Superbit
Starship Troopers: Superbit
The Patriot: Superbit
Gattaca: Superbit
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (cheaper than Best Buy)
The 6th Day: SE
Last Action Hero
61*
Monty Python and the Holy Grail: SE

In store (2 for $20) -
Scary Movie 3 PV
Mona Lisa Smile PV
Paycheck PV
Girl Next Door UR PV

All the superbits were $21.99 (cheaper than most online sites). I got LAH since it should be the ws/fs flipper. The only one that I can find in stores now is the fs version.

This was an excellent way to get rid of some old titles and get me some titles that Ive had on my list for some time! Thank you BBV!
