RIP Peter David (was: Peter David is in really poor health)

I just saw that Philip Hester posted a link to a go GoFundMe for him and his family to help with bills.
He was one of my favorite writers back in the early 90’s when I started getting into reading and collecting books.

He also had a weekly article in CBG which I subscribed to just to read his column.

Hi, everyone. I'm fundraising for author Peter David and his family.

He's had some compounded health problems, and the bills are piling up! On top of kidney failure, and the steep medical bills incurred from that, he just had another series of strokes AND a mild heart attack.
As we wish him a swift recovery, and send our love and support to his wife Kathleen and his family,
let's also pitch in and help with their medical bills and living expenses.
Please give what you can to relieve some of the immense stress that this family is going through right now.
On behalf of Peter, Kathleen, and the whole family, thank you!

Isn't he currently writing Captain Marvel...the Genis version? I saw it on the shelf this past week but with no ChrisCross art I didn't pick it up.

This is sad to hear.

From the GoFundMe updates, it sounds like they expect him to recover, which is good news.

I gotta say, this nation's health care via GoFundMe system is insane. Or the whole health care tied to full-time employment thing, which affects all the comic book creators, because they're all treated as independent contractors.

I've always thought Peter David had interesting takes on characters, he's one of the more reliable writers of his generation. Unless you are a supersuperstar, making comics as a pro barely pays the bills. It's sad how little money many recognizable creators seem to make over their careers.

Unfortunately this isn't his first trip down the GoFundMe circuit. Apparently his divorce wiped him out and then the IRS came calling. Throw in a bunch of unfortunate health setbacks, and the poor guy has really been put through the wringer.

I've been a fan for 35 years, since his runs on Hulk, Atlantis Chronicles, Aquaman, Young Justice, X-Factor, Supergirl, the list goes on and on. Amazing creator. I hope things turn around for him and his family.

That makes more sense now, cause he has had so much non comic work. I mean how many star trek novels has he written?

Looks like 5 years ago he was asking fans to help with the tax bill: https://www.peterdavid.net/2017/03/3...erate-trouble/

With all that said, his Professor Hulk run is one of my favorite comic runs

I doubt most of the Star Trek novels that get published are huge sellers, so the authors aren't likely to be paid very much for them.

I was in another corner of the internet where it was said that because Chris Claremont earned $X, therefore Peter David was a bad person who made bad choices.

Got to meet him at the smaller Washington State Summer Con last year. Seemed like a nice guy. Hope for a quick recovery.

Marvel's been pumping out a bunch of Omnibus editions collecting his work (I just bought his X-Factor vol 2 omni, which starts his "X-Factor Investigations" line) - I hope they're paying him a good chunk of change for those, and I hope it helps him!

What would be the reason for removing him from Medicaid?

Sorry, I don't click on Twitter.

Clicking on that go fund me it says, “But Medicaid, which had been taking care of his Long Term Disability, has just dropped him. As a result, medical care and living expenses are mounting beyond current control.”

RIP Peter David

What an absolute legend. Peter wrote so many of my favorite comics over the years.

Very solid comic book writer, had long runs at both Marvel and DC. They recently issued his Aquaman run in an omnibus.

This is perhaps the best one-page summation of a character ever.

Sad to lose a comics legend. Also sad to think his family might get crushed by medical bills.
