I'm late to this but I love the concept.
So far I have:
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Neil Gaiman
Miller's work up to and including Sin City is top freakin' notch.
Kirby is freakin' Kirby. Nuff said.
For Gaiman's Sandman alone... dayenu. But man I loved Black Orchid, Books of Magic, all the Sandman spin-offs, and even 1602 (which was one of the best Marvel books of that era).

My dad loves Carl Barks. Me? I never got into those Duck comics. He was great at it, no question, but it made almost no impact on me. So, no to Carl Barks.
And I've never heard of Paul Pope.

Most of the usuals have been mentioned, but back in the early 90’s when I was heavily into collecting I would purchase anything Peter David was involved with, especially his runs on Aquaman and The Hulk.

Those were legendary runs but his (multiple) runs on X-Factor are also incredible, as well as his DC runs on Supergirl and Young Justice. And of course The Death of Jean DeWolff.

I also read a lot of Grant Morrison's stuff in the 90's. Heavily into '90s Vertigo. Animal Man was my favorite book for a while.

I really, really like Paul Pope, but I don't think his body of work is extensive enough to elevate him to a Gaiman/Moore level.
A lot of of it also unavailable and difficult to find, and he's also kind of a slacker in that he hasn't really done much in the past two decades after being somewhat prolific in the 1990s. There was Battling Boy, which I didn't really care for, and a few smaller pieces here and there. I head that he was going to remaster THB, but I haven't heard any updates on that in years. I think he might have started moving into commercial illustration and fine art, and away from comics.
His most notable works are Heavy Liquid, 100%, The One-Trick Rip-Off, and (for you mainstream readers) Batman Year One Hundred.

I want to say Carl Barks but I've never really explored the Duck books beyond a few issues here and there. So no on both Barks and Pope.

Day Four Response and Wrap—Up
I don’t think I had any exposure to Disney comics as a kid. I grew up when comics were literally everywhere, but only remember ‘kid’ comics like Bugs Bunny and Richie Rich before I got into DC books. I was 20 when Gladstone started putting out Disney books and was expanding my horizons at the time. Instantly fell in love Bark’s Duck books. Imho, there are no finer adventure stories in the medium. He’s an easy yes for me.
Have very little exposure to Pope’s work, but like what I’ve seen and have accumulated a few of his books to read soon.

Frank Miller
Jack Kirby
Carl Barks

Day Five Choices
It’s Family Friday! Among the comic families we have John Buscema and Sal Buscema, Gilbert Hernandez and Jaime Hernandez, John Romita Sr and John Romita Jr, and the master lineage and teaching of Joe Kubert. Heck, include dark horse candidates like Mario Hernandez or a younger Kubert if you want!

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
I'm late to the game here but here we go:
Frank Miller: yes. I was buying his Daredevil comics from the newsstand by my grade school and that but him on my radar as one of my favorites. His later work with the experimental Ronin, the great work in Dark Knight, the even better work with Batman Year One, and later Sin City cemented that.
Jack Kirby: for sure! Kirby is THE BEST EVER comic creator as far as I'm concerned.
Neil Gaiman: no. Gaiman is great but he doesn't break my top ten.
Moebius & Tardi: no. Both great but not top 10 for me.
Barks & Pope: Again, both great but not top 10.
John Buscema: yes. His work on Conan is legendary but he also killed it on Avengers and Fantastic Four and more. I absolutely love him. His brother Sal gets an honorable mention but doesn't break the top ten.
Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez: yes. Love & Rockets is one of my favorite comics ever. These two are absolutely top 10 in the world of comics. Mario, not so much.
John Romita & Romita Jr.: no. I love these guys and they may be 11 and 12, but not top 10.
Joe Kubert: yes. One of the best ever and I'll love his Tarzan comics forever.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
Is the intent to put guys on our list and have them be replaced when we reach 10? I think I've been very selective because I know at least 6 that haven't come up that are probably locks, but if we can roll people off I think I would add a bunch from this list especially, the only hard "nos" being John Romita Jr. who, while prolific, wouldn't sniff my top 10, same with Andy and Adam and probably Sal and Mario. I have to think on Joe Kubert (which seems insane) and John Buscema but I think I have to put John Romita Sr. for now; my main dilemma is that 80s comics were when I grew up and there are a bunch of 80s creators coming up.

so far, so only 4 slots left. I get it because most of your choices are similar to mine, but man I have way more than 4 left in my head, and probably others I haven't even thought of yet.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
Lots of great talent in today's group, but I have to go with my heart. As much as I appreciate someone like John Romita (Jr. can take a hike though. Never been a fan.), those old Spider-Man stories just don't mean as much to me as some of the admitted nonsense I read in the 90's. I think Joe Kubert is the probably the best artist on that list, but again, his work just doesn't mean much to me personally. I do have some strong nostalgia for Andy Kubert, but he was never one of my favorite artists.
So that's going to be a no on all of them.

OK, now we're talking...
John Romita SR and John Buscema are both in my Top 5, so an emphatic YES to both. I love Jazzy Johnny "Ring-a-Ding" Romita and Big John Buscema. I've been buying some Thor collections just for Big John's art (the stories are pretty good, but the art is great).
Sal Buscema is probably just inside my Top 10, as is John Romita JR. We'll see the names as this goes on (there are writers that may push one or both of them out later, but for now they both get YES votes from me).
So, my list so far, with the possibility of amendments later on depending on who the candidates are...

John Romita Sr is in for me! I got into Marvel a bit later in my youth (15) and was blown away by Spider-Man, obsessively seeking out all the back issues with Romita and Ditko.

I respect all of those creators and love a few of them, but none of them are in my personal top 10. Sal John Buscema is closest though.

This is a really great thread. Nice work, Trevor.
I'm mostly a lurker (read at work but never log-in; rarely check this forum at home), but I hope to chime in soon.
There have been some great names mentioned so far, but none I can consider in my Top 10 (mid-'80s to mid-'00s reader-- and the cape comics are what hooked me), even if I haven't really considered my Top 10 yet. Looking forward to what I end up with

I like the Herndandezs, Kuberts, Buscemas (I own a few JB Conan pages) and Romitas, but I don’t know that any of them would make my list.

I never have the mental energy for these threads but wanted to pop in to give love to Kirby, Miller, and Sal Buscema (always loved his version of The Hulk). Jaime Hernandez is such a master of the comic art idiom it's not even funny.

And listen, Romita is undeniable legend, just not in my top 10 of comics creators.
