Yeah, Byrne should really be Byrne/Austen (at least when it comes to art). Same with someone like Alan Davis and Mark Farmer.
Kevin Nowlan is always someone I think of when I think of great inkers, though his own style sometimes overrides the penciller even (same with my other favorite on that list, Ordway).

Thanks Erik!
We’ll go until Thursday morning with this slate, since I was late today.
And if anyone else has ideas for a fun theme day of choices, or just wants a crack at this to make sure one of their top people gets presented, shoot me a PM and we’ll have more guest posters take this thing over for a day like B5Erik

I gave him some thought - when he spent time and put effort in, he could do a pretty good job. That wasn't usually the case, however. His work on the pre-Joe Sinnott FF was pretty horrible, but his work on Thor was pretty good (even if he did butcher a lot of Kirby's work). But he did rush a lot of jobs - as asked - and the results were pretty bad.

I want to include Jerry Ordway on my list. I love his work on Captain Marvel and the Shazam family. For the moment he's on.

For a licensed comic (which was no knock back in the day) they put some incredible pencillers on that book.

Micronauts had a lot of pencilers over its run. Some great, like Michael Golden, Butch Guice, Kelly Jones, and Pat Broderick. Some old veterans doing serviceable work like Steve Ditko, Gil Kane, Howard Chaykin, and Keith Giffen. Some maybe not so great.

There are a lot of great artists in that list, and some excellent artists known primarily for their inking in the industry. I’ll admit that I’ve never been an “art guy” and am especially bad at identifying inkers from their work.
I loved the Swanderson team, so Murphy Anderson is a favorite, along with Alfredo Alcala and Jerry Ordway.
But I stay at 90%.

I’m going back to cleanup names from a certain era of comics and ask you if Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, or Joe Hill are in your top 10.
And I’m gonna see if a couple of random wildcards are lurking and ask if you have R Crumb saved for a spot or if you have good taste and are a true 20th century boy and ride for Naoki Urusawa.

Crumb goes on my list. I've got so much of his work. I've even got a couple records from his collection with post it notes he wrote details about them on.
I love Fraction and Aaron, but they don't make my list.

On first pass, Urusawa makes my list: 20th/21st Century Boys, Monster, and Pluto are all amazing. I also had no idea until I looked it up that Viz is releasing Asadora. He will probably fall off though as more mangaka come up.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
The only name who should be on my list from the past few days is Stuart Immonen. His work on Legion -- and then on Superman-- in the '90s was during my favorite time for DC Comics. As Hokeyboy said earlier: he was a workhorse, which was especially important during the '90s when artists realized they didn't have to (or couldn't; the expectations from fans was for more-detailed pencils) hit monthly deadlines. If Immonen was the regular artist, you could count on getting at least solid 10 issues or so a year with his work.
Honorable mentions regarding inkers: Al Gordon's work on Legion's 5YL over Giffen's pencils is still a favorite to me (and I have read/heard he was far more than "just" an inker on that run) as well as Brett Breeding over Jurgens' pencils on Superman became the definitive depiction of that character for me.
My list:
Keith Giffen
Mark Waid
Bob Layton
John Byrne
Stuart Immonen
George Perez
Gary Larson
Garth Ennis
Geoff Johns

Not top 10, but Fraction's Casanova was one of my favorite books of the past two decades. Mind-bendingly amazing multiversal sci-fi espionage.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
Nothing for me the last couple of days. Inkers are a vital part of the creative process, but none are going to make my list. And I must not have good taste or be a true 20th century boy, because I have no idea who Naoki Urusawa is. My knowledge of manga begins and ends with Akira and Lone Wolf and Cub.
I read your post and thought, "huh, Casanova sounds familiar" and I realized that I bought it at some point on Comixology but never read it. Thanks for the reminder.

Reminder that guest posters are welcomed, so please PM me if you have an idea for a slate one day.
I have sampled pretty much every Matt Fraction series and enjoyed them all enough to put them on the finish someday queue. I’ve only finished one or two of his runs though, so can’t put him high on a list yet. Fwiw, I like his wife’s writing too, Kelly Sue DeConnick.
Jason Aaron is probably one of my favorite current writers, but a victim of my usual problem, most of his runs are still in my queue to finish. Southern Bastards and Weird World and a few one-offs are all I’ve finished I think. Really want to start his Thor run soon.
Haven’t read any of Joe Hill’s novels yet, but his comics have all been good so far. Loved The Wraith and Basketful of Heads, and Locke & Key so far.
Love the documentary on Crumb but haven’t read much of his work yet. And Urusawa is a total blind spot that it looks like I should correct soon.
My list remains at 9.
Frank Miller
Jack Kirby

Okay guys today I wanted to comic with a mixture of flavor even tho I kind of fear what’s left in lists is more vanilla but today I want to know if Emily Carroll, Alex Toth, Harvey Kurtzman, or Charles Burns are on your list.
I also am targeting a couple of people and wondering if Jim Aparo makes your list?

Carroll, Toth, Kurtzman, Burns - no x 4.
Jim Aparo? That one's tough. I love Aparo's art. Absolutely love it. When it comes to Batman he's right up there with Neal Adams, and he did some great work with Aquaman, too.
But, in the end, he's Top 20, not Top 10.
My list remains unchanged.
John Romita Sr
John Buscema
John Byrne
Neal Adams
Gerry Conway
Marv Wolfman
George Perez
Gil Kane
Stan Lee
Joe Sinnott
Cut from the list, but still great...
Sal Buscema
John Romita Jr.
In the Top 20, but never on the list...
Steve Ditko
Jim Aparo

I love Charles Burns, and Black Hole might be on my top 10 list of graphic novels, but i don't think he'll make my list. I'll have to ponder that for a while.

Re: Play a game with me, who are your top comic creators?
Jim Aparo? Eesh. I respect his work on early Batman and Aquaman, but by the early/mid 80s his art started to feel stodgy and dated, and having him on Batman in the 90s kept that title feeling stodgy and dated, no matter how good the writing was.
I give Alex Toth props for his design work for Hanna-Barbara, especially with Superfriends and Space Ghost.
List still remains as is.
My Top Ten:
John Byrne
Garth Ennis
Neil Gaiman
Jack Kirby
Frank Miller
Alan Moore
Grant Morrison
George Perez
Stan Sakai
Jim Starlin
Honorable Mentions:
Kurt Busiek
Chris Claremont
Darwyn Cooke
Jose Luis Garcia Lopez
Geoff Johns
Keith Giffen
Bob Layton
Stan Lee
Jim Shooter
Mark Waid

Still need to read some Emily Carroll, webtoons are largely a blind spot. Update! Ordered one of her books, Through the Woods, and started it last night. Gorgeous and hauntingly gothic stories, I’m in for whatever she does next.
Love me some Alex Toth. The cartoons he designed were foundational to my youth, and they were given new life with the often brilliant shows of Adult Swim. I love the comics work of his that I've found, but most of it was before my time. So as much as I love his work, it's mostly animation for me, I'm just too young and too broke to have enough of his comic book work to make him ‘eligible’ for my top ten there.
I'm ashamed at how little of Harvey Kurtzman’s work I've read. I’ve heard him referred to as the Orson Welles of comics, and while I'm slowly watching and loving Welles’ work, I still need to read most of Kurtzman’s.
I started Charles Burns’ Black Hole and loved it, but got distracted and it’s buried somewhere near my bed.
I like Aparo’s art a lot, but as I age I lean towards more stylized or unique artists.
I stand at 9.

Jack Kirby

Speaking of X-Men one of my nominees today had some mutant cred for sure in a mix of a group. I'm also going to see if anyone likes some people that I usually view now more as commission people than comic artists.
Today I want to to know if Paul Smith, Adam Hughes, or Jeff Scott Campbell are in your top 10.
For the writers out there let's also throw in Peter David and Steve Engelhart.
