I don't think people get worked up over that. They (for whatever reason) get worked out when their beloved characters are "replaced" by others whether it's a retcon or even a name. Even the Jonathan thing is mainly because he took up his father's moniker.

I may be underestimating the propensity for outrage though.
It was hard for Marvel to replace legacy characters back then as most of their superhero line had basically started 12 years earlier. DC on the other hand replaced their legacy characters to jump start the silver age but for the most part, all of them where white men and women (Barry Allen, Hal Jordan, Katar Hol, Ray Palmer). By the 70's though John Stewart arrived to the scene, during a period where the Green Lantern/Green Arrow book was 100% sociopolitical. Also, years before that happened, characters like Supergirl and Batgirl were introduced. Seeing how dumbfucks reacted this year to learning that there's a female Hulk character named She-Hulk, I could only imagine their moronic take if Supergirl and Batgirl were introduced today. Back then it was taken as adding a new character to the book. In today's social media/talking heads infested world, these characters would be attacked just for being females, like Carol Danvers has been attacked for being Captain Marvel.

My point is that there may have been some negative reaction to these character back then, but it was mostly contained to letters to the editor that never saw print or water cooler talk at work or school lunch talk. At most, we saw the overreaction by Fredrick Wertham. Now, social and right wing media amplify these negatives take to the point that is just spewing hate on things that these fuckers don't have anything invested in other than getting click and views. But that toxicity spreads to the LCS and comic cons and online discussions and continues the gatekeeping and the homophobia and racism in social media and the doxxing and the attacks.

What took them so long (I guess the lack of a successor)? They already killed/replaced Batman years and years ago (and of course he got better).

Actually I take that back, they did kill Superman, they just replaced him with... a better Superman. But for... other reasons, this will cause a ton more controversy.

The new Wonder Woman Historia #1 is one of the most beautiful comic books I've ever seen - great story too!

The art is certainly pretty. I imagine DC will sell it in one of their larger formats.

The book's already in an over-sized format (9"x11"), and since this one took 3 years to make, and the next issues aren't exactly around the corner, it's not going to be collected any time soon.
