Re: DC Comics - 2021 Thread
See the difference to me is that they weren't replacing the legacy characters, ie: there wasn't a new Jean Grey, Angel, Beast, etc., it was a changing of the guard, and we've had a ton of that in Avengers and other places. I don't think people get worked up over that. They (for whatever reason) get worked out when their beloved characters are "replaced" by others whether it's a retcon or even a name. Even the Jonathan thing is mainly because he took up his father's moniker.
I may be underestimating the propensity for outrage though.

My point is that there may have been some negative reaction to these character back then, but it was mostly contained to letters to the editor that never saw print or water cooler talk at work or school lunch talk. At most, we saw the overreaction by Fredrick Wertham. Now, social and right wing media amplify these negatives take to the point that is just spewing hate on things that these fuckers don't have anything invested in other than getting click and views. But that toxicity spreads to the LCS and comic cons and online discussions and continues the gatekeeping and the homophobia and racism in social media and the doxxing and the attacks.

What took them so long (I guess the lack of a successor)? They already killed/replaced Batman years and years ago (and of course he got better).
Actually I take that back, they did kill Superman, they just replaced him with... a better Superman. But for... other reasons, this will cause a ton more controversy.

The book's already in an over-sized format (9"x11"), and since this one took 3 years to make, and the next issues aren't exactly around the corner, it's not going to be collected any time soon.
