Marvel Comics - 2021 Thread

Decided to start a thread for Marvel so we can discuss upcoming releases, storylines and other related stuff.

Marvel has announced some cool Epic collections coming later this year

PhantomStranger 01-21-21 05:37 PM

Re: Marvel Comics - 2021 Thread

Marvel's Epic collections are a good combination of size and value. While I love the idea of omnibuses, the Epic collections are much easier to handle and read.

What If? Omnibus is being solicited for April but for some reason is missing issue #16, which features Shang-Chi and Fu-Manchu. My understanding was that Marvel had secured the rights to reprint these Fu Manchu stories several years ago when they released the Epic collections and Omnibus.

WHAT IF? THE ORIGINAL MARVEL SERIES OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC. Collecting WHAT IF? #1-15 and #17-22.

That MOKF stuff was confusing. I thought they originally said omniboo only so I bought all them plus DHOKF, then they started releasing Epics, which I agree are an easier reading experience for me.

Re: Marvel Comics - 2021 Thread

The MOKF epic line is in limbo. The latest (3rd?) volume was supposed to be out already, but it keeps getting delayed. I'm not sure there was even an official notice. It just vanished from the schedule. The speculation is that the rights agreement has lapsed. This seems to support that theory.

I hear Marvel is trying to bring back the What If? comic book back for another go at it because of the What If tv show or whatevver its supposed to be.

Eh.

Im old fashioned. i still enjoy and only the 1970s-1980s What If and the 1990s What If series. They had the best alternate stories. Even mid late 1990s issues of What If got pretty dark especially with Peter Parker and Bruce Banner

There was a time when What If was my favorite Marvel comic by far.

Marvel announced a Heroes Reborn revival for it's 25th anniversary this year. Preview images look like an alternate universe story where Doctor Doom has the Crimson Crystal of Cyttorak, Reed Richards and Ben Grimm are agents of SHIELD and Coulson running for President.

Anyone reading The King in Black? I might check it out when it hits digital trade form, as it seems similar-ish to War of the Realms, which I liked.

Do you have Marvel Unlimited? If so, there's a bunch of stuff leading up to it if you want to get started (and there's a reading list in the app as well)

edited to add: oh, I see you said digital trade form, nvm.

Been reading it and liking it a lot so far. Everything that Cates has done in Venom, Thor, Silver Surfer: Black and other Venom-related mini-series are paying off in this series. Knull is a great villain that will translate well in the MCU. Every issue has been action packed too, which adds to the story.

The original What If? was a little hit and miss for me, but some of the stories were great.

I always like it when they’re included in a trade of the material the stories riffed off of.

I really enjoyed the Spider-Man: Life Story, which was basically having Spider-Man, along with the Marvel Universe, aged in real time (as it was supposed to happen originally with Lee, Kirby and Ditko). Looking forward to this

Spider-Man: Life Story was the best Spidey story in years (IMO). Loved how Zdarsky was able to combine Spider-Storylines from each decade into the real world framework. Death of Gwen? Check. Secret Wars? Check. Clone Saga? Check. Civil War? Check. Superior Spider-Man? Check.

Looking forward to the FF version. Mark Russell is fast becoming a favorite writer of mine. His spin on the Flintstones was unexpected and I thought his Wonder Twins was great.

I'm looking forward to this new version of the team, but really, this title has had a lot of issues ever since it was taken away from Abnett and Lanning.

Feels like a death knell for comic book stores and maybe even comic books as we know them. Though once DC took the heat for leaving Diamond, I knew Marvel wouldn't be far behind.

And here we go with another X-Men relaunch. It’s still apparently under the Hickman long term plan for the X franchise but is now written by Dugan.

I'm guessing that the Predator series by Marvel will be indefinitely postponed as the original writers of the movie are suing Disney for the rights to the characters.

This confirms that Joe Bennett is an anti-Semitic piece of shit and his drawing on the recalled Immortal Hulk 43 wasn’t an accident

Also confirms that Al Ewing is pretty crappy, having no courage to take a stand until after his hit book ended.

First issue was good enough to have me get the second, but I’m not sure I’d call it great.

My understanding is that Ewing wasn’t aware of the drawings and tweets by Bennet until the day he posted his disagreement on Twitter so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt of not splitting his partnership before the end of Hulk
