Denny O'Neil has passed away at 81
Sad news today as Denny O'Neil, one of the greatest comic book writers of all times, passed away from natural causes at the age of the 81. His contributions to the comic book world, particularly DC Comics, are invaluable. I was able to meet him several times and remember that the last time I saw him in Baltimore Denny got sick and had to leave early. He look frail at that point but was in good spirits after con. We'll certainly miss him

This panel in particular is one of the greatest works ever and one that still resonates to this day

For me, his work was usually good, but not great - but he did write some great stuff along the way. That GL/GA run was excellent for sure.
I was always surprised by how bland and generic his run on The Amazing Spider-Man was, but I blame Jim Shooter just as much as O'Neil for that.
Denny was one of the legendary writers in the business, and I've always thought fairly highly of him. He had a great run, overall, and his impact was huge.
Sad to see him gone now.

This is a bummer. I met him a few years back at a local con. His mom lives in Des Moines, but I would have sworn she was his wife. Not that they were weird or anything, she just didn’t look much older than him.

Tried to get in his line at a comic con about two years ago to get him to sign a shield I had but every time I got to his booth he was either not there or they capped his line. I figured I would get the chance to meet him at another con, but hadn't seen him at any since then. Another veteran comic writer gone. RIP.

My favorite O'Neil BATMAN is from Detective Comics #457.

I was a Brandeis University student from 1988-1992, and we had a really strong Comics/Gaming scene. We set up some major cons while we were there, attracting talent like Peter David, Bill Mumy, Denny O'Neil, Mike Grell, Mark Lenard ("Sarek"), and many more. Anyway at our March 1989 con, Denny O'Neil was one of our guests (he usually came every year) and I was able to speak with him for quite some time about the upcoming "Batman" movie with Keaton and Nicholson. He couldn't talk specific story points, but talked extensively about the behind-the-scenes talent, the costumes, sets, vehicles, everything. He was also working on the comics adaptation with Jerry Ordway and mentioned that they had to produce most of the comic from the constantly-changing script and stills from the production.
He also spilled the beans about a third ongoing Batman title starting up in the fall. This ended up being Legends of the Dark Knight. The next year he signed all his issues for me.
He was always super nice, very approachable, and affable about his work. And agreed, that is a lovely tribute.
