The 6th Annual DVDTalk Horror Comic Book Challenge - October 2019

Horror Challenge

What's a Comic Book Challenge?

- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations

How does it work?

- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter

What makes it a "challenge"?

- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)

Who can participate?

- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not

When does it start and end?

- it begins at dusk on the last day of previous month, and ends at dawn on the first day of the next month
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges

How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages

Who wins?

- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

What is the schedule?

January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

Want a personal checklist to help you pick stuff to read?

Obviously you'll want to edit the below spoilered example checklist to fit your needs.

Spoiler:

Figured I’d start this one early to coincide with all the Horror DVD Challenge talk getting serious.

Happy 6 year anniversary to the four people still occasionally participating in these Challenges!

I’m doing 100 horror books next month for sure.

Ashamed to say I only read a few issues of that acclaimed run. I’m sure I’ll love it, Swamp Thing is my favorite comic character, but it keeps getting buried by my other hundreds of unread runs/books.

Maybe I’ll join you in read thru.

Did we decide in a previous challenge that Gaiman’s Sandman is dark fantasy rather than horror?

There are some horror elements for sure, and that’s close enough for the extremely lax rules around here!

Re: The 6th Annual DVDTalk Horror Comic Book Challenge - October 2019

I have an A to Z of Marvel Monsters on Google Play, and hopefully should be able to find some horror on the DC Universe app. Maybe Hellblazers is on there. It reminds me of a couple issues I used to have. When I was a kid, my parents bought me some comic books at a flea market. Forget the title, but one of them was a horror comic. I remember one of the stories was about a demonic rock band, and another had an archeologist possessed by a mask. Another one I used to have wasn’t a whole comic book, but it was a year book of sorts that had I think a Sleepwalker story.

Now that Walking Dead is over, perhaps this month would be a good month to finally finish that series. Well, no way I’ll finish, as I’m like 100 issues behind. Heck, I’ll probably just start at the beginning again.

^I was a few trades behind on TWD before catching up this summer then reading the last few issues as singles.

Currently reading Mort Cinder, a gorgeous Argentinian b&w comic strip.

Going to try to make some progress on Revival again. Loved the first few issues but put it aside and will have to restart.

Spoiler personal ramble:
Spoiler:
Total failure to keep close to my 100 goal this month (I’m at maybe 20) has had me re-evaluate my goals and monthly checklists. Think I’m giving up on them, at least for awhile. They’re starting to feel like a chore, and taking away from time that I should be spending organizing and reducing clutter.

Hopefully I’ll still binge read a few things this month. Broke open my Walking Dead hardcover the other day.

It's an ambitious goal but I can see how that can start interfering with more productive activity.

Yeah, and it’s not just these comic reading checklists. My OCD leans towards checklist obsession, and I have lists for daily activity like exercise and Bible reading, monthly viewing lists, etc. They’re useful but I need to find a better balance.

I see Jen has hacked Trevor’s account again.
