This is a 40th anniversary replica of the G1 Optimus Prime. Paid $70 for it. Wanted to get a replacement for the one I got in 1984 that was broken by my cousin back then when he was a baby. Probably won’t open it. I’ve gotten multiple smaller versions of Prime over the years, but nothing could replace the OG G1 version. This is as close as it gets. I guess these were originally sold at Walmart? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...2e6b67e77.jpeg |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
So, for you MEGO fans out there, I have a friend that wrote a book many years ago that was published by Twomorrows called MEGO 8" Super-Heroes World's Greatest Toys by Benjamin Holcomb. It is now out of print and goes for ungodly amounts on eBay and Amazon.
Spoiler:
He is taking pre-orders on a new book and I was going to post it here for anyone that may be interested. It is going to be a very small print run. Here is the info: After TwoMorrows published my Mego book in 2007, I swore I would never make another book. But now, nearly two decades later, it is finally possible for me to make THIS book… a book I once thought impossible. This is the one Mego collectors have always dreamed of owning. Last year, I realized I had to stop dreaming, roll up my sleeves and get to it. Now the dream is a reality, and I'm proud to launch the Pre-Order campaign for… MOC: Mego World's Greatest Super-Heroes | 1976-1982 Check out the attached JPEG for a sneak peek at the cover. This stunning, 60-page Prestige Format Hardcover will be the definitive Reference Guide to Mego World's Greatest Super-Heroes on fan-favorite 2nd Issue cards. EVERY CHARACTER? Every Super-Hero. Every Fist-Fighter. Every Super-Gal. Every Super-Foe. Isis. Teen Titans. EVERY COUNTRY? This global examination includes every carded 8" WGSH distributed in The United States by Mego… in England by Palitoy and Bradgate… in Canada by Parkdale Novelty and Grand Toys… in France by Pin Pin Toys… in Italy by Harbert. Even the legendary carded Super-Heroes distributed in Australia by Croner Toys. Packed with never-before-published photos, facts and information — including a complete Price Guide! — this Limited Edition, signed Hardcover drops next month. As someone who has read my previous work, you know the level of quality and detail I pore into everything I do. I plan to sign the title page of each copy of this limited production run. If you would prefer your copy personalized with your name and a note from me — or if you prefer it UNSIGNED — simply let me know. JUST HOW "LIMITED" WILL IT BE? Due to the considerable expense of self-publishing a quality book like this, the total number of books will be limited and based on paid pre-orders. I am crossing my fingers for a press-run of 100 copies. So, yeah. VERY LIMITED. Over time, I expect this book will be scarce and in-demand. Remember when I said I need your help? It's really true. The book is done, but the printer gets paid up front. So I can't get this beast manufactured without pre-orders. MOC: Mego WGSH is $75 + $6.95 s/h, available in USA only, and you can reserve your copy here: https://py.pl/2Gpt6M And just FYI, you can still get the old out-of-print MEGO original book for a decent price if you missed it and are interested. It is available here currently with a revised look and additional material: Mego 8 Inch Super-Heroes: World's Greatest Toys! Hardcover Book - Figures Toy Company I subscribed to his now defunct fanzine about MEGO and he does quality work. |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
I would hold my parents hostage at the store unless they bought me a MEGO in those days.:banana:Must have gone through a dozen or more, though I think my parents steered me towards the ones on clearance or discount.

I'm guessing they'll never do a 40th anniversary Megatron replica that turns into a Walther P38.
My daughter wanted to watch Transformers One yesterday and she started asking questions about if that's the true origins of Transformers. So I rewatched the episode of "The Toys That Made Us" again with her. Love the interview where the executive said that several times their employees were stopped at the airport and had to show them that the gun transformed into a robot and wasn't real. And she was like "it was edgy but that's exactly what we needed." Also the whole Hasbro GI Joe to Mego, imported to Japan, to Henshin Cyborg to Micronauts to Microchange back to America for Transformers always fascinates me. Plus the fact that Takara and Hasbro are still working so closely together. |

Not in the US, at least (which is kind of crazy considering how much easier it is to get a real gun than in Japan... or perhaps that's the reason)
One thing that they are required to do is put a bright orange end on the barrell of the toy gun to make it distinct from a real firearm. Several years ago, there was a Megatron produced in Japan that was a screen-accurate robot mode and a realistic-looking Walther. Big Bad Toy Store imported these, but had to open the packages and permanently attach orange plugs into the barrels in order to comply with US law. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...5fbcbfeaf8.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...54a9225b7f.jpg Really nice looking figure. Considering that there is an exemption from affixing orange plugs into replica weapons, considering that this sold for $250, I'd think it would qualify as a replica collectors piece and not a toy. |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
Yeah, I have that Masterpiece Megatron... in a box somewhere. Like most later era Masterpieces, it is a pain and a half to transform. A third party just made a "regular Transformers" sized gun Megatron though that looks pretty good (though I have no idea if that would get through customs now)

Magic Square Bumblebee (and Cliff) are tiny little bundles of joy but be really careful with the ankles especially during transformation.

Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
Well, first we got a ROM Marvel Legends, excited for that.
Now the Loyal Subjects is showing off their new MASK line: https://comicbook.com/gear/news/the-...ine-exclusive/ My nostalgia toy campaign may run out of steam soon (I can soon no longer use my kids as an excuse) but not yet. Also Mattel grabbed the DC license back, presumably from Mcfarlane, so that should be interesting in 2026. I still will always wish for another Legion of Superheroes set. |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
Many DC collectors had grown disenchanted with McFarlane. I liked some of their figures but the downsides like "chase" versions and odd facial sculpts grew tiresome.

The Toy Collectors Wish Book Special Edition: G.I. Joe by Retro Toy Quest LLC — Kickstarter
I know there are some big G.I. Joe fans here so check this out. This is by the same guys that did the excellent Toy Collectors Wish Books Volume 1 & 2 so this should be a nice book. Early bird discount is going on right now for the next seven days. https://i.kickstarter.com/assets/048...Z4IWLwf44tE%3D |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
Kickstarter for the Transformers Compendium is up:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...compendium-set I didn't back the Joe one and just got the softcover, but in this case there are two versions and I doubt the "Til all Are One" will come out in softcover |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
^Woah. That set hit over a million dollars in funding in a day. Holy shit!
Not my thing but it looks like a really nice set. |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
In a day? It's been like a few hours... ;)
|
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
Yeah, that's going to hit all its stretch goals. I never read the original Transformers series beyond the first 25 issues or so. If I was made of infinite money I'd take the chance on a complete set but a blind buy is not something I want at that price.
I'll probably settle for the first compendium. |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
I'm seriously considering buying up several of the "Til All Are One" editions. Seems like something that will increase in value once they come out.
Only thing is if I sell them online through eBay or whatever, the shipping would be astronomical. That, and the income tax on them... |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
It's up to $1,915,943 now. https://forum.dvdtalk.com/images/smilies/lol.gif It's going to hit two million before the day ends.
Wonder what it will eventually hit when it ends? |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
The Transformers comic books are weird. A ton of the Autobots are DEAD for several early issues, save for Ratchet, and it was dark but not good dark but what the heck is happening dark. Then after the first two years the book just didn't ever get to great, IMHO.
I skipped the G.I. Joe collection because the books spunded too big to actually read. I will likely skip this one, too. I have a lot of back issues, I'll page through them some time and maybe I'll change my mind. |

So they had them kill off Optimus Prime and Megatron in #24 and #25 for no real storyline reason, other than their toys were discontinued, and they had to introduce all of these new, lame toys into the book like Powermasters and Pretenders. But when they killed off Optimus Prime and Megatron, they didn't do the same kind of time jump the movie and cartoons had, or replace them with Rodimus Prime and Galvatron, so it just felt kind of lost in the wilderness. The UK series, from what I remember, actually sort of improved on the US comics because they were able to expand on what was happening in the US comics. The book did actually get kind of interesting once Simon Furman came on as the writer in the last couple of years. But otherwise it was a really messy and unfocused series that would be totally incomprehensible to anyone who wasn't already versed in either the cartoons or toys. Transformers holds a certain amount of nostalgia for me; it was really my introduction to comic books when i was a youngster, and that quickly led to picking up things like Claremont's Uncanny X-Men, David's Incredible Hulk, and Nocenti's Daredevil, then moving on from there to things like Sandman, Love & Rockets, and whatever Alan Moore and Grant Morrison were writing when I got a bit older. |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
I received this email from Big Bad Toy Store last night:
Hi Everyone, I’m writing to share with you how we are working to handle the rapidly escalating tariff situation. I want to be transparent and honest with you about the impacts of these tariffs. This is a complex situation so I apologize upfront for the length of my note, but I feel it is important to be as clear as possible in this difficult time. Tariffs – What Just Happened For 25 years, we have operated as a family-owned business under a 0% tariff rate. Several months ago a 10% tariff was enacted for goods made in China. It was then doubled to 20%. In April a 34% tariff was added to the total, bringing us to 54%. Last night another 50% was added, and today (April 9th) an additional 21% was added, bringing us to 125% total tariffs on Chinese goods. Vietnam was to be subject to a 46% tariff, but it appears that this has been reduced to 10% for the next 90 days. These two countries manufacture 90% of the goods that we sell. What is the Impact This unfortunately is going to result in retail price increases on products impacted by the tariffs, including new and open pre-orders. We are working hard to minimize these increases through discussions with our vendors, deploying the most efficient importing processes, and ultimately sharing directly in the financial pain. I’m heartbroken to have to do this, and I hate this tariff situation: it is ridiculous, poorly thought out, poorly implemented, cruel and punishing to everyone involved in affected countries and at every level of our industry. Who Pays Tariffs Tariffs are a tax on the US consumer. Foreign governments do NOT pay these tariffs. The US based companies who import these goods are directly responsible for paying the tariffs. And ultimately, the US based consumer pays for them through higher product prices. We are devastated that it has come to this, and we will continue to work hard to minimize the impact to you. When and How will Prices Change In the past month we have raised prices in a manner that was inclusive of expected tariffs, while also honoring previously pre-ordered prices. Unfortunately, the dramatic increases in tariff levels has now made this approach impossible. To minimize confusion during this rapidly changing situation, we will be changing newly affected pre-order product listings to reflect our normal, non-tariff-based price. We will also add a notice indicating that a tariff surcharge will be added at the time of the product’s arrival. We will inform you of the full amount before your payment method is charged. You will also be able to cancel your pre-order at that time if the surcharge amount is something you do not wish to pay. Our customer service team, as always, will be ready to help with any issues that arise from this situation, and we will be very flexible given the circumstances. Today, we expect the surcharge may be between 15% to 40% of the pre-order price, however that could change as the situation continues to unfold. Please note that any items currently In Stock are not subject to the tariff. We are working as fast as we can to make these changes clear on our site, but it will take us time. We have over 10,000 items listed for pre-order currently, and it is going to take us time to work through how each vendor will respond to their specific tariff situation. Our supply chain is complex and we have hundreds of vendors. The timing of when a particular tariff is applied will depend on a variety of factors including import shipping dates and any new rules set by the government. Finally I absolutely hate increasing prices to you, but the tariff situation is beyond our control. If tariffs are reduced or removed, we will reduce or remove the tariff surcharges on orders accordingly. My pledge to you is that we will be fair, and we will share the pain of this. I assure you we are already feeling significant economic and business disruption pain from these tariffs. We will continue to work hard to serve you with the quality and customer service level you expect as we navigate through this difficult time. I want to thank you deeply for all the trust and loyalty that you have placed in BBTS with your collecting passion. Whether you have recently joined our family or have been with us for years, we truly value our relationship with you and will do our best to continue to earn your trust every day. Sincerely, Joel Boblit Founder and President |
Re: The Official Toys and Collectibles Thread
Yup. Lots of uninformed people calling them out saying they're just scalping and oblivious to how 145% tariffs are going to affect them, but I applaud BBTS for coming out in front of this even if it means I move some of my domestic preorders away from them. I think they have some kind of deal to direct ship some of even their domestic stuff from overseas and that's going to hurt them even more, I think.
At least transformers and some others come from Vietnam, so "only" 10 percent at least for the next 90 days or the next tantrum. But I was all excited about the MASK revival and now I'm mainly wondering where their factories are. |
