I'll confess that I've read very little of it. I heard all the hype a few years ago, sampled a story, liked it enough to buy a collection, but haven't read it yet. Then they did the first hardcover FCBD a couple years ago which was a cool novelty worth seeking out. I definitely made sure I got one or two of them this year, but I can't say if the overall series is a good as my initial sampling of it years ago. It's one of the hundreds of series/books in my (mental) to-read-pile.

I really like the series, but I think the novelty of it being a free hardcover is a big part of the appeal.

The series is really well done.

I actually like Rust more than Mouse Guard.

Mouse Guard was the only one I really wanted but it was the only book my local shop didn't have. I didn't bother going to the other stores since their usually bum rushed by all the freeloaders including myself.

^ Probably some of both.

I've been with it since halfway through the original mini, so I'm a fan. And since so much else that I once followed no longer exists then I'm even more of a fan of the little that is left.

It is sad how many of my absolute favorite titles either no longer exist or come out extremely rarely.

Nexus
Flaming Carrot
Mr. Monster
The Masked Man
Mister X
Concrete

But then again, loving obscure things and not 'needing' to collect everything by many of the big guns like Superman or Spider-man makes obsessive collecting a bit easier.

Same with me. I'll collect pretty much anything with Savage Dragon in it, but he doesn't pop up as often as Wolverine, so that's helpful.

I was always surprised we didn't get a Savage Dragon movie back in the 90s.

We had a cartoon along with Spawn, WildCATs and UltraForce.

The 90s were magical.

The story in this year's hardcover is nice, I'll look for more.

Anyone remember the Rust from the early 90s and perhaps Now Comics? I vaguely recall liking it, but can't remember anything about it right now.

Correction: late 80s

I know nothing about Mouse Guard--it's the hardcover novelty for me.

I preferred Phantom Girl in the peekaboo pantsuit and other girls in the Grell-Cockrum costumes.

I don't know why, but it still surprises me how many people walk in, grab the free books and walk out. You'd think you'd at least PRETEND to look around for a minute or two.

Most of the stores I've visited don't really lend themselves to casual browsing on FCBD. It is a crass move but lines can get very long at the registers if you want to make any type of purchase. I usually come back a few days later, when the store is dead.

^ Yeah, my store actively encourages people with free books only to get in and get out. The line for purchases gets insane the first half of the day.

Oh... I glanced at it, but then someone else asked for it, and that was the last one gone. Wish I'd held onto it..

Trevor I read/collected every one of the titles back in the day. Hell, up till now I thought I was the only person who ever bought The Masked Man! And those original Eclipse issues of Mr. Monster were perfect. Man, I miss these books. I think I'll dig them out of their long boxes this weekend and revisit them. Thanks!

It's cool to see Mr Monster still pop up now and then, some current Dark Horse Presents, but whatever happened to BC Boyer?

He did very little outside of The Masked Man. Hilly Rose wasn't nearly as good iirc. He did some art for Hellboy back in 1998, and that appears to be his last comics work.

I think I'll dig out my Masked Man issues too! You have his appearances in the two Eclipse anthologies? He showed up in Total Eclipse as well, for completionists.

Some of those comic books look interesting. I'll have to see if I can get a ride into town with the nearest comic book store.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 3, 2014

Seems like a rather "meh" selection this year overall, but it does seem like there are plenty of "all ages" and kid friendly offerings, which is good.

I wouldn't mind getting the Bob's Burgers, The Tick and Bongo comics, as well as the 2000 AD and Dark Circle ones, but I'm not sure it's worth waiting in a line for.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 3, 2014

I understand it's about promoting comics in general but my apathy about the free books grows as Marvel and DC pull away from FCBD. Their participation has declined over the years in the event and I get the feeling now they grudgingly tolerate this promotion.
