Those Comics in Your Basement? Probably Worthless

Re: Those Comics in Your Basement? Probably Worthless
I haven't been really into comics in years, I mostly just pick up Star Wars TPBs these days. back in the 80's/90's I collected a few things here there, some Spider-Man, some Avengers, some TMNT and of course Star Wars and Star Trek. In the past few years, my wife has really pushed us on a "decluttering" campaign, and I decided I could lose my comics. I knew from seeing things like this before I wasn't going to get much, but I was still pretty upset at how little I got. I wish I had at least kept my TMNT (both B&W and Archie comics runs, more of the latter) as there doesn't seem to be any good TPB of either series that collects every issue.
It wasn't about not getting a "return on my investment", but for such a small return, I would have preferred to keep those few boxes I had.
Slightly off topic, but sorta relevant, I do wish Magic: The Gathering would do this. Because of their ridiculous reserve list, there's cards that are perfectly usable that can't be reprinted because of some nebulous "promise" they made years ago (I'm envisioning some mafioso-like group of hobby shop owners threatening them with replica ninja swords or something). So these cards go for thousands of dollars, constantly getting worn down from use, and they can't even be reprinted in obviously less valuable variant form. I just want to play the game, I don't want to invest in cardboard for my retirement.

(my bolding) I wish I could print that on a large sign and put it in the face of every storyteller, in every medium. (Esp. someone like JJ Abrams). One of many reasons I don't bother with single issue comics these days, all the winding storylines going all over the place and constantly rebooting themselves.

My take on the OGN is they are similar to Annuals that are not done by the "regular team" and feel more "disposable."
I've gotten to the point that I pretty much ignore "Annuals" as more and more they are not necessarily in continuity and are typically done by what seems to be new "creators" looking to get a foot in the door. While I don't begrudge anyone trying to break in it will not be supported by me with a overpriced annual that doesn't really add anything "new" to a character. Because of this trend I recently gave instructions that my file will not contain annuals unless I specifically ask for them.
For a OGN to get my attention it *must* be done by a "team" I recognize and respect *plus* be in continuity. That's fairly rare. I grew tired of the "Elseworlds" mentality that seems to pervade most OGN's as anyone can tell a (fill in your favorite character here) story that doesn't fit anywhere. It takes more storytelling ability to tell a story that *fits*.

There are Magic cards that go for thousands of dollars? Huh. I thought most of them dropped in value after a few years because they get phased out of tournament play.

And then a few years ago they introduced a new rarity (mythic) that shows up about one in every eight packs, and of course they often end up being tournament powerhouses and they keep their value because they also introduced a new format that goes back about ten years (Modern). So you can keep playing those cards after they rotate out of Standard.

Well, there's some from the first sets that are absurdly broken and had short print runs so they're the uber expensive ones

And here's why I dropped Magic years ago. I started playing during the early 90s and sold all my cards for a pretty penny a few years back. It funded a family trip to Sea World and Comic Con.

Yeah, the Gecko's guy is really, shall we say, penny pinching. But Gecko's usually has the best selection of current and recent issues, and decent selection of back issues.
Just down the street from them is Collector's Maniacs. They are usually good for current issues, but sometimes run out. Organization is bad though. And back issues are a mess, and not many of them.
Other Realms doesn't get enough new issues. Their back issue selection is OK.
Jelly's doesn't get enough new issues either. Their back issue selection is very large and old, as has been noted.
And that's all the comic stores on Oahu.

Jelly's is pretty close so I'll try that as well.

Yeah, it's just a couple of blocks over. You should try to head down to Aiea. The other Jelly's is behind a Ford dealer and a Goodwill store on Kamehameha. They have a larger selection of back issues.

Sounds like they are bankrupt or having a going out of business sale without announcing it. Hoping to get their financials in order to stay in business.

If you're collecting comics for the $$$ value then you're doing it wrong.

There's something to that. I've only been in the store twice, but their business appears to be all secondhand other than new comics (floppies and trades), which would be a different financing model.

I don't really know. The last time I talked to Percy (owner) he said everything was going well. They were moving things around the store and straightening out their stock. This was back in October, though. I won't be back to Oahu until June. Hopefully, they'll still be there.

Unforeseen circumstances might mean that they're having a problem (or are behind in their bill) with their distributor (likely Diamond) or maybe a sub-distributor.
