How is Love & Rockets? Is it's reputation inflated from being an early popular indie title or is it altogether 'epic' on it's own?

I tried it several times but personally, couldn't connect to it and put it down eventually.

I bit strange to me that there are no Clowes and Crumb items in the Fantagraphics catalog on Comixology - they are kind of the 'bigger' stars there, but there's still enough intriguing stuff on sale now - any recommendations would be welcome ! :)

Yes and yes.

It's definitely an acquired taste, and can be a bit overwhelming to new readers who don't know what they're getting into.

The Cliff Notes version:

Love and Rockets was originally published in the early 1980s as a magazine-sized black and white anthology by two brothers, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez. Each brother wrote and drew his own stories, which ranged from one-page strips to longer, continuing stories.

The bulk of Gilbert Hernandez' work involves the fictional Mexican town of Palomar. This is a fairly "epic" piece involving multiple characters and families over a span of decades. Children in the early stories become adults and have children of their own. Gives off a strong Robert Altman vibe.

Most of Jaime Hernandez' work involves the Locas, which centers around the lives and loves of two sort-of punk rawk chicks named Maggie and Hopey and their circle of friends. This one can be a bit strange at first because the early stories were street-level tales about characters on the fringes of society, but also involved things like robots, and space ships. It helps to think of Locas as an adult Archie with magic realist elements in the background. (Magic realism is a predominantly Latin American genre of literature that portrays magical or unreal elements as a natural part in an otherwise realistic or mundane environment.) The longer Jaime's Locas runs, the more the more fantastic elements fade into the background.

Though these are potentially fighting words, it is generally believed, at least in the earliest stories, that Jaime is the better artist while Gilbert is the better writer.

The easiest way to get into these stories would be the new "Love and Rockets Library" books, which are separated by creator. You can start Gilbert's Palomar tales with Volume 1, "Heartbreak Soup." With Jaime, you can either begin with Volume 1, "Maggie the Mechanic," or Volume 2, "The Girl from H.O.P.P.E.R.S" -- Vol 1 contains the more sci-fi based stories, while Vol 2 is where Jaime really hits his stride as a creator, so you could start at either of these volumes.

The Library books are the ones that are on sale. I don't remember why, but I only picked up the Locas books from an earlier sale. It's some tough going making it through Maggie the Mechanic, though. Maybe I'll try the first Palomar book.

I like the Cliffs notes summary. I say that as someone who has some autographed L&R books that I haven't read. Wouldn't be a bad choice for the September challenge, actually.

The Atomic Robo sale was confusing since I owned the books, and it wasn't showing as owned. Finally realized they are being published under a different publisher/line.

If you purchased the second Transformers IDW Humble Bundle then it included most of the titles in this Combiner Wars sale except for Windblade 1-4.

How about an extra 25% off all your Marvel, DC, Vertigo, Dark Horse, (and a couple others, I forget which, Image and Boom maybe, whoever has an app basically)?

This is odd. This 142 page GL Corps collection doesn't show up in the list of Green Lantern sale items, but when I hit "add all to cart" it appears for 99 cents. It collects issues 27-32. I think I already owned those issues, but, for $.74, I couldn't resist.

Week two of the Marvel Firsts sale adds another two girl hero books for $.99 each.
