Not Amazon, Marvel is the one sticking it to Jim Starlin by putting a $24.99 newly released book for $.99. Artist and writers like Starlin get paid a base guarantee for their work but make more by getting residuals on the books that get sold with their names. It's very hard to get a residual from something that Marvel/Amazon is selling for $.99.

You're talking physical, right? Amazon does do massive discounts on physical. However these digital deals are beyond that, a digital book that sells for 24.99 and up was on sale for 99c on the day of release (heck, the day before release). That's some loss leader.

My main experience has been with physical, yes, but the point of my comments is that Amazon wants to be in control of pricing. They feel its their right to price as they see fit and the thing that they desire beyond all else is a monopoly on the marketplace. I'm sure they would love nothing more than to convert as many comic readers as possible to digital given that Amazon/Comixology is more or less the only option.

Ok then. Let's put it this way then. Marvel is absolutely 100% not giving away HUNDREDS of books by HUNDREDS of writers/artists for pennies on the dollar in order to screw Jim Starlin out of residuals on his one book that happened to come out last week.

I didn't say the rest of the sale was to stick it to Starlin, but selling his newly released book, that is priced at $.99, is certainly sticking it to him. And to the comic book shops that sell the hardcopy of the book

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I’m sure it has nothing to do with Starlin. For two years now, first with the 80-90% off and lately with the 99 cents, it’s been every collection.

Anyone know what the pricing dynamics or ‘rules’ are with digital comics? I imagine it’s not just a flat fee that Comixology/Amazon pays to sell each book. There can’t be any sort of allotment or min/max to sell. Wouldn’t it be something like: Marvel/whatever company gives Amazon the digital file for each book, and Amazon pays them a set amount for every copy they sell. I thought there were limitations on new books needing to be full price for a set time, but that hasn’t been the case for quite awhile, and some of the single issue sales have included new issues.

I’ve always said that I’d never subscribe to Comixology Unlimited. I buy so freaking much that it really makes no sense to pay to rent when I’ll likely never read everything I’ve purchased. And even if I do become a systematic voracious reader of incredible speed, it’ll still take years to read everything once, and I enjoy re-reading things. Plus the thousands of games and movies to play and watch, but I digress.

But anyway, the $6 per month CU is really not something I should even consider. Yet here I am, strongly considering it. Talk me in or out of it please.

Pros:
  1. there are books on it that I want to read, but think I don’t need to own
  2. the extra discounts will probably make it at least pay for itself, if not turn a ‘profit’
  3. it may help shift me away from a ‘buy for later’ mode and into a ‘read it’ mode
Cons:
  1. the extra discounts may encourage me to buy more
  2. even if I don’t buy more, and the subscription is cost neutral, it’ll make my backlog keep increasing
  3. much of it is on Hoopla, and I rarely read all ten of my titles per month

I have Marvel Unlimited and Comixology unlimited and it is saving me a fortune. 90% of what I read I think is ok, but I will probably never pick up again. So the renting aspect is perfect for me. They also allow me to try things for free rather than getting sucked into buy long runs during sales only to discover that they are not good. If DC would get on board with Comixology or there own thing I would be in heaven.

If you buy books thru the iOS Dark Horse, DC, or Marvel apps, now’s a good time to stock up on iTunes cash; save an extra 15% on your comics. The DC and Marvel app purchases are comixology compliant.

Thanks Dave! Ebay just sent out their ebay bucks, so this is a good opportunity to not forget to use those up.

More $0.99 new release trades today (same prices on both Amazon & Comixology) including an Avengers Defenders War Epic Collection; guess the disgruntled brick and mortar retailers aren't winning this fight. Likely expect some other additional trades added at $0.99 tomorrow.

Now I regret not picking up Jean Grey volume 1 with the earlier sale. Oh well guess I save a buck.

I was also expecting more 0.99 TPs to be added tomorrow, but seems now the sale is suddenly over - it's not listed in the Sales page and the prices are no longer 0.99$. Maybe all of the complaints did finally register.

Edit: Oddly enough, yesterday's new books seem to be selling for $0.99 on Amazon, but not Comixology.

IMAGE18 for 60% off Image singles and collections. If you have unlimited, it is another 10% off.

When looking back on when I took the unlimited plunge, I can blame Ron.

For anyone who likes old 50s Horror/Sci-Fi/Crime comics, Comixology has the EC Archives for $7 a book this weekend, which is the lowest I've seen them (they've occasionally gone on sale for ~$10 a book).

I also noticed that Comixology has the Carl Barks Library, Don Rosa Library and the Mickey Mouse newspaper strip books on sale for $9 a book. I might pick up a few books (anyone have any suggestions of which ones to get?)

I still haven't gone for unlimited. For me, the Spider-Man Clone Saga is kind of my benchmark for a title I want to read someday but don't want to purchase, so either I'll wait for unlimited or just get it at the library. :)

Donald Duck Lost in the Andes is considered a signature Barks book. Only a Poor Man is a good starting point for Scrooge. I've liked all the Rosa material I've read, so you could simply start with volume 1, Son of the Sun.

I'm not as well-versed in Gottfredson but have always enjoyed Sheriff of Nugget Gulch (included in Color Sundays volume 2).

The new release Marvel collections are not 99 cents at Amazon or comixology.

I get that the Comic Stores are upset about this, but what is more of a hit? The new release collections for 99 cents, or the quarterly(?) Amazon sales where basically all the Marvel collections are 5 bucks at most?

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

^ Yeah, I’m going to wait a few months before I buy anything Marvel. Those quarterly 80-95% off collection sales are my new maximum price for now.
