Go Batgirl!

Following YAHOO.COM’s exclusive preview of ACTION COMICS #1 and the NEW YORK POST’s exclusive preview of BATGIRL #1, both first issues will receive a second printing, while JUSTICE LEAGUE will receive a third printing since the second printing sold out in 24 hours.

The second printing of Justice League #1 has already sold out? I read somewhere that the first printing was 350,000 copies. How many was the second?

I wonder how many of the buyers are just speculators hoping it will be valuable in the future. The irony is that with the largest print run of any comic released in the last decade, it will probably be the least valuable comic of this decade. Just like X-men Vol. 2 #1...

The true test will be how well the #3 and #4 issues sell.

I've been seeing the figure of 200,000 for the first printing, but I can't say with certainty that's accurate.

What I fear is that those who bought the "combo pack" with the digital download code won't open the damn bag because of the speculation mentality. Those who bought just the issue itself might actually read it, though, and that's all any publisher can ask. If sales drop dramatically after the next issue, I would interpret that to mean that readers want actual content and not just pretty pictures. Then again, I'm perfectly willing to concede if sales remain solid (they don't have to go through three printings to convince me regular issue sales are respectable), then this more style-over-substance approach is what the current readers want. Since I'm not bothering with Justice League, I'll just be happy they have a hit on their hands.

DC Comics: The New 52 [Hardcover]

Yeah, I posted that previously but I don't think I had cover art to go with it and anyway, that was a few pages ago so a healthy reminder now that we're actually starting to see these issues is probably a good thing.

I somehow forgot to order the set of 52 #1s that I had in my DCBS cart. That was probably a sign to stay away, especially with the wedding and move coming in 10 weeks, but this hardcover is giving me a second chance.

It will be a little unwieldy, having 52 #1s in a single book and then having the #2s as floppies, but it's quite tempting, and about the same price as the discounted #1 set iirc.

There were 200,000 pre-orders alone, so that isn't counting people that walked in and bought it off the shelf. I don't recall where I saw that 350,000 figure, but I know it was definitely more than 200,000.

I say put it on your wedding registry. Non-comics people are likelier to respect an expensive hardback book than they ever would 52 individual issues. And, let's face it: You're both grown damn adults who have been living as such for a while. It's not like you're just starting out and need someone to actually buy you stuff for your kitchen. At this point in your lives, if you don't already own it, chances are you're not likely to use it anyway.

I'd like to know how they're sequencing the collection. For instance, as I noted in a recent post, Stormwatch spins directly out of Superman, but will be published three weeks earlier. It can be argued, of course, that encountering that issue in the hardback will be no different than buying the individual issues; that you can either hold onto it and wait till you get to Superman, or you can go ahead and read and take the chance that the spoilers won't adversely affect your enjoyment of Superman. It's a minor thing, of course--getting the collection is obviously the important thing--but it's the kind of thing on which I fixate.

Personally, I'm simply not interested in all 52 titles. When I drew up my initial list of titles I might want to take a chance on, I didn't even come up with half. From there I've whittled it down to about ten. Still looking to trim that in case I wind up actually wanting to keep up with what I buy. (But you guys should totally buy everything I want to read so it keeps getting published!)

Gotcha. So by going to a third printing, it's entirely likely they'll have printed more than half a million copies of Justice League #1. That's pretty encouraging, even if a certain percentage of those sales are just to speculators. I wonder what the digital sales are like.

Preorders is from shops, not customers. Whatever preorders are would normally be the upper limit of what actual sales are, and DC would count the preorders as actual sales since JL isn't returnable.

Of course, DC also did a healthy overprint on this issue. So it will be well over 200,000.

In fairness, though, shops also take pre-order requests from customers so a certain percentage of those shop pre-orders therefore represent customer pre-orders. If Twitter is to be believed, a lot of shops have in fact sold out of the issue; Gail Simone has re-tweeted several shop owners sharing their excitement over this.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

The point about the preorders stands, though. Comic books are usually ordered three months in advance by comic book stores with no return policy, so the numbers are store orders not customer preorders. Some stores may sell through an reorder, others may sit on dead stock (which doesn't seem to be the case here).

Of course this is their premier creative team here. Johns and lee with the big 7 on JLA even without DCnU should've done solid numbers, we'll see if retailers guessed correctly on the other 51.

I rarely ever buy things like this but I just might spring for it, especially if Cheapassgraphicnovels or someone else runs a decent sale on it.

Went to my LCBS at lunch just to check out the books (I have a DCSB order in already). They had hundreds of Action, Batgirl and Detective comics out. More than average of Batwing and JLI. But they were already sold out of Swampthing. Judging from the number of Animal Man they had, I doubt they ordered very many. It'll be interesting to see which titles are still publishing in a year.

My guess is that the titles not being offered for subscription are the ones we'll see fall first. Batwing, Swamp Thing and Animal Man are on that list, so today would be particularly discouraging for Animal Man fans, I would think.

To save you the trouble of going back two pages to the list I posted of the titles not offered for subscription, here they are:
Spoiler:
Batwing
Captain Atom
Mister Terrific
Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E.
I, Vampire
Resurrection Man
Demon Knights
Stormwatch
Voodoo
Grifter
Deathstroke
Suicide Squad
O.M.A.C.
Blackhawks
Men of War
All-Star Western
Static Shock
Hawk & Dove
Legion Lost

Ha! Yep. the other titles that shipped today (Hawk & Dove, Men of War, OMAC, and Stormwatch) and had small amounts on the shelf are on that list. Although I suspect the store ordered more than a few extrra Batwings because of the Batman tie in.

Went to the local shop today and decided to try the following:

Action Comics
Batgirl
Stormwatch
Justice League International
Animal Man

I got the final copies of Action and Animal Man and the second to last copy of Stormwatch. On the other hand, the owner was quick to tell me that as of 4pm, only 2 customers had purchased copies of Hawk and Dove. If that holds up nationwide, that might be one of the first to get the cancellation axe.

I decided to give Action Comics, Detective Comics, Swamp Thing, and Batgirl a try...but online. I know that I'm contributing to the death of the LCBS, but the fact is I rarely go into them anymore as I mostly read graphic novels and get those through Amazon. And if I were to buy comics from a local store, it would be rarities or import magazines and not new issues from DC and Marvel. But getting them digitally might convince me to rejoin the fold for mainstream superhero comics.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

i picked up 4 of the tiitles today (well 3 actually, because Im dumb and was in a hurry and picked up both Action Comic cover thinking one was Superman  ).

Detective - So I get that Action Comics is supposed to be the introduction of Superman and set in the past, but is this supposed to be set in the past too? I was hoping, even with all the number 1's, Batman was going to be business as usual, and if this is what it like for it to be set in the current timeline, I think I'm going to be disappointed with the awkward character interactions. That said, I was really intrigued by the ending...

Action - I kinda liked this a lot. It wasn't what I was expecting...I guess I'll see how it progresses with Morrison, but so far, I'm in.

Batgirl - I really liked this one too, but I didnt buy any DC the last few months, and
Spoiler:
I don't know how Barbara is walking again...what was her "miracle?"

I might go pick up JLI later this week, I hear good things so far.

I picked up the Justice League last week as a combo, to try the online read. I was hoping to like it, but I didnt enjoy the process...it would probably be much better on an notepad than it was on a laptop...

I don't love reading comics on a laptop, but on an iPad it's aces. I just wish they charged less for the digital versions since you don't get a physical copy and they don't have to pay to print and ship it.

I picked up Detective, Action, Batgirl, and JLI. Detective is the only one I really enjoyed. :(

Yeah, I kind of got the feeling that Detective is set in the past too, although I am not sure. Jim Gordon looks a lot younger, like he looked during his lieutenant days. The comic never gives his title as lieutenant or commissioner. I don't know if that was intended or not. All the police, except for Jim, not trusting Batman is also reminiscent of the early days. I agree the ending was very creepy and left me wanting more. Of all the new 52 I have read, I can say that only Detective has left me wanting more...

Spoiler:
The miracle is Flashpoint. Barry changed the timeline. That's why some things are still the same and others aren't. Its just screwing with the timeline, kind of like how Superboy Prime's reality punch screwed with the timeline and brought Jason Todd back. Its pretty stupid, but that's about all the explanation you are going to get. DC's reboots have always been messy.

Honestly, I thought JLI was by far the worst of the six DCnU books I've picked up so far. Clumsy writing, nothing but setup, but it's the sort of bland setup that doesn't make me care about anything that's going on.

I'm not really sure what to make of Action. It didn't have that usual Morrison sparkle to it. Not that it's bad or anything, but I was expecting more. I'll stick around for a little while longer to see where it goes, though.

Liked but wasn't blown away by Batgirl. As for your spoiled question, it seems clear to me that there's more to it than what kgrogers1979 suggested, but it hasn't been spelled out yet. I'm sure that's something we'll get in the next few issues.

Spoiler:
It can't just be Flashpoint changing the timeline that's responsible for Barbara walking because the book makes it very, very clear that she spent the past three years in a wheelchair. If it were just Flashpoint reverting things, she never would've been in a wheelchair in the first place.)

Same general sentiment with Detective, but I'm right there with you on being intrigued by the last panel. The surprise ending of Animal Man #1 will definitely have me going back to it too.

Spoiler:
The Killing Joke still happened and works with Barry's messing with the timeline. Basically, The Killing Joke happened, Barbara spent three years paralyzed, then Flashpoint happens, and *poof* Barbara isn't paralyzed anymore.

It's basically the same thing as Superboy Prime's reality punch. Joker did kill Jason. Jason was dead for several years, then *poof* Superboy Prime does his punch and Jason is alive in his coffin and digs himself out.

I guess that is kinda what i meant, I either REALLY love morrison or I don't get him, there isn't usually any in between...and this was kinda in between. I wonder if he had more of a leash on for this since it was the "flagpole character" in-continuity.
