Let's talk about what comics you're reading in July, 2007

I'm also miffed about the Action Comics storyline (Johns/Donner/Kubert) being relegated to the Action Comics Annual.

DC is finally soliciting the end to the Alan Heinberg Wonder Woman arc he started with the opening arc of the re-numbered WW title last year in the form of a WW Annual as well.

The scheduling at DC is just getting ridiculous with the amount of fill-in issues for many of their titles these days.

Countdown continues to tread water for me at this point, 2 months into it.

Read the Funeral issue for Captain America. Good excuse for some Cassaday splash pages, but wasn't impressed by Loebs' writing.

I was reading this week's CSN (Comic Shop News) and noticed that on the cover of the upcoming issue of Amazing Spider-Man 544, it say in the top left corner "Still only 299 cents!"

Are we going to see an increase on the cover price of comics in the next 3-4 months?

Crap. Doesn't that usually mean that a price increase has already happened somewhere, which is why they "brag" about still being only $2.99?

I can still vividly remember how outraged I was when I saw an ad in a DC comic that showed the price was going up to *gasp* 15 cents. The horror, the horror.

Seriously, I've been giving a lot of thought to dropping (almost) all current titles and just concentrating on Silver Age gaps I have. Another price jump could very well sway me ... *sigh*

That pretty much describes how I feel about monthlies. Too freakin' expensive. Nowadays the majority of my comic $$$ is spent on specials, OGNs, trades, and backissues. I've collected nice runs here and there, mostly complete series that only ran for 12 or so issues. Hourman, Slingers, and Aztec were really great reads from the late 90s.

I haven't been posting much b/c the site just isn't working for me. I can't edit posts, start my own thread, & sometimes things just look weird, so posting has become a pain in the ass.

But I'm still buying my mass amounts of comics every week.

With this forum I must say though, it makes me sad that pretty much everyone here only buys trades, & even more so, when a great trade comes out, nobody seems to buy it. Mouseguard, Batman: Ego & Other Tales, , which every Batman & comic book fan should own, The Other Side, Crossing Midnight, I can go on & on with all the great trades that have been recently released.

So please please please, all of you trade junkies, this week, go out & buy the first True Story, Swear To God tpb, I realize this is pretty much a superhero only crowd, but if you are going to ever try a slice-of-life comic, this is the one to get. Issue #6 may have been the best single issue of a comic I've read all year.

I think that the Still only 2.99 cents is just a throw back to how comic covers used to look just like the rest of the cover. I don't think that it means that we can expect a price increase.

Yes you see that correct the special Spiderman One More Day issues are going to be 3.99 Now after this fiasco Marvel will sneak in another price increase, no I am not sure of it but I have a strong hunch this will happen. My LCS will be even more in trouble financially than they already are now, I will drop 50% of my titles instantly and I won't even feel remotely bad....

What other stories are included with Batman: Ego? I have the original prestige format, so I want to know if it's worth it to pick up the trade for the extra material.

TSSTG is comic goodness. So is Local. For some reason, I really identify with broken characters...

Embarrassing Purchase of the Month: I'm ashamed to admit this, but after suffering through the "Who Wants to be a Super Hero" series last year, I was curious about how the comic would be, which came out Thursday. What a stinker! I have nothing but respect and admiration for Stan Lee for all the wonderful stuff he did back in the '60s but he really needs to put the pen down now. I just hope that Stan does something else quick so this doesn't become his final work! Lordy, what a stinker!

Suffering? Oh come on, it was a cheesy-bad-can't-look-away-train-wreck, but I wouldn't call it suffering.

Season 2 premieres July 26th.

I've been reading an issue or two (or four) of 52 for the past couple of weeks and only have 2 to go. I've been enjoying it. Did they publish all 52 issues in trade format yet? I didn't get Countdown, figuring I'd just pick up the trades and save a few bucks.

Also just finished Savage Dragon Archives Vol. 2 and Gotham Central - Dead Robins and am reading the first volume of Classic What If.

According to Amazon:

52 Vol. 1 came out in May
52 Vol. 2 comes out July 25.
52 Vol. 3 comes out September 19
52 Vol. 4 comes out November 7

If Marvel goes ahead with that big of a price increase, they can go fuck themselves in the ear. I will drop every book like a hot cock and walk the fuck away - actually, I need to get the hell out of this hobby, so if they do this, it'll be the kick in the ass I need to walk away. Though I'll still be buying Omnibuses, as I love them and unlike the monthly floppies, I can pre-order them at almost 50% off, and even if I paid full retail, they still come out way less per-issue than the floppies do, even though the monthlies have ads and shit.

I'm already down to 4 Marvel books a month, and a price increase will prolly take it down to 1. It is funny how floppies full of ads are more expensive than a nice trade or sometimes HC.

1 trade series I always get is New X-men, which always has a 4 issue story arc for $10.99 or 11.99, before discounts.

Yay, new thread (sorry for bumping the old one)!

Got my monthly shipment in last weekend.

Annihilation Book 1 HC: Ordered this late, but if it's as good as people say, I'm going to order the other two volumes

Blue Beetle v. 2 Road Trip: Unfortunately ordered this before reading the first volume, which I thought was pretty meh and tried too hard to be teenager-"cool" Still like the art, so we'll see how this volume goes.

Hulk Planet Hulk HC: Huge volume, I'm saving this one for last

Justice #12: now where did my other 11 issues go? Ready to marathon this one as well

Justice League of America 10: Oh, so that's what this storyline was leading up to? Ok, I guess. I like that the Legion is now officially (again) part of Superman's past, and that the classic Legion exists in at least one of the universes. But Sensor Girl and Karate Kid together? Did I miss something? Why not just have her be Projectra?

Killraven Premiere HC: Love me some Alan Davis, though I still haven't finished reading his FF: the End.

Supergirl 18: Is it just me, or did they reboot this book yet again with this issue? I'm sure I'm missing something not reading Countdown with the whole Monitor thing.

Supergirl and the Legion 31

Teen Titans 48: Ok, not reading Amazons Attack beyond what was included in Wonder Woman, but the whole concept here makes little sense to me. I get that they're trying to make some kind of modern day political parallel with the internment camps, but it seems very heavy-handed. And has hanging out with Supergirl dumbed Cassie down or something? What kind of stupid plan is that?

Ultimates 2 vol 2

Wonder Woman 10: Seems like by having WW apologize for her previous actions, it pretty much invalidates a key component of the splitting up of the big 3 during Infinite Crisis. Weren't they trying to make her more military before? I hope that the reboot of this title will right the ship.

On a side note, I had gotten the New Avengers/Runaways Civil War book and realized I had no idea who half the runaways were. So I went back and reread the first hardcover, then cracked oven HC number 2 for the first time. Man, I love reading a good story in large chunks, with actual writer AND artist continuity (though I realize this changes later on. On to HC 3. Then Spider man loves Mary Jane, for some more Takeshi Miyazawa goodness. The whole "adults are evil" thing is starting to wear thin for me, but I guess they have good reason to feel that way.

edited to add: with Countdown dropped and no JSA this week, and Justice ending, my non-tpb bag was super, super thin this month...

Spoiler:

Karate Kid's death at the hands of Nemesis Kid?

Not sure if I needed to spoiler that, as it was so long ago?

I was also a little confused by

Spoiler:

Wildfire talking like he was somehow connected to Red Tornado?

Continuity is so screwed up these days, I can't make myself keep up with stuff that happened 15-20 years ago.

True, it's just that I remember the era that Sensor Girl was introduced, and that was one of the reasons she disguised herself.

However, they do mention something about

Spoiler:
Karate Kid getting resurrected

which may solve the continuity problem. Then the mystery becomes, why does he still wear that ridiculous collar?

Schlock from the man who gave us Solarman, Ravage 2099, and Striperella!? Say it ain't so!

You will find no bigger fan of Stan Lee's Silver Age Marvel output than me, but I'm sad to say it's probably been 30 years since he has written anything I thought was good. I mean, I bought each and every issue of "Just Imagine ..." from DC, and each time, I was disappointed.

Wait .. I take it back. I thought the "Stan Lee Meets ..." books from Marvel that came out last year were lots of fun.
