Me too. I actually had stopped reading FF till Byrne came in and I really liked the look of it. Ran across that floppy a couple years ago and read it again.

How about a What If? Omnibus...that I would love to see.

Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
Nick Fury Omnibus
They could probably get all of the early appearances (Kirby, etc.) AND all of the Steranko issues in one volume. I'd also like so see some collections devoted to Marvel westerns (Rawhide Kid, Kid Colt, Two-Gun Kid), but that ain't gonna happen. The two RK Masterworks are as close as we're ever likely to come. Better chance of seeing Sgt. Fury omnibuses, which would be really nice. |

One wrinkle to the above: the decision to remove Kirby from that cover was done at Kirby's request. Given his dispute with Marvel, he didn't want to appear on the cover. In light of that fact, is it more respectful to restore the picture and give him his due or to respect his wishes? I don't know.

I misread that as "Warriors Three Omnibus"

Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
I just wonder how long the omnibus/absolute wave will last. It's really an anomaly that we're eating up deluxe-priced physical media. At some point many of us will hit saturation, whether it's from storage space or just that we'll have bought all the titles we want to own. I know I've bought a number of them because the price was good, but haven't actually read that many.

Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
Yeah, one parallel would be the deluxe collector's edition video games, but I have no idea how well those sell. I know I don't buy them because I don't need the extra crap.

Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
I can see them publishing these forever. Even if floppies go away and everything moves to digital. The print runs are already so low. Of course in 2025 they will have a list price of $250.

Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
Space is definitely an issue (and the weight of some of these means they need to stay on or near the bottom shelves of my bookcase). I think content is the other one. Did we really need a Secret Wars II omnibus? An Avengers Crossing one? An X-men Fatal Attractions one (it may not officially be an omnibus but it retails for a hundred bucks)? I'm curious to see how many people actually bought these.
But as long as Marvel can make money off of this stuff, they'll do it. I'm sure the print runs are pretty low for these, and they can gauge demand well enough to not lose money. They do collect everything in trades or smaller HCs anyway, so reselling stuff they've already made money on in larger editions to the suckers who buy it, like us, makes sense. They basically just solicit as many collections as they can, then refuse to keep them in print, making them basically larger periodicals. I've heard complaints (I think from Brian Hibbs) that they basically will have something like volumes 1,3,4, and 6 of something available to re-order but not 2 and 5. I also wonder how many comic stores actually order these? Maybe for special orders, but they take up space, they're expensive, and Amazon basically cuts the profit margin razor thin anyway. I'll continue to collect the stories that I've either already started in omnibus form (Bru's Cap) or those that I know I enjoyed and want in hardcover form (Byrne's FF, runs like X-Statix, etc.). I'll skip over those that I have no interest in. I'll waver on those that fall in the middle. For instance, I like Secret Warriors but I don't think I need it in an omnibus format. For space reasons, I'm leaning towards digital purchases anyway. |
Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
Yeah, the "we'll have bought all the titles we want to own" in my original post was an unclear reference to the fact that a lot of these releases are stuff I've never heard of--maybe not bottom of the barrel but certainly not the top. Not that I'm an industry scholar, but I like a lot of stuff and have a visa card. A few I bought just from this forum and what we thought were pricing errors so I decided to lock it in and never felt the urge to recheck and cancel.
It makes sense that they do short print runs. Then they can rerelease it later and get another wave of sales in. My LCS has a number of them, but they've had the same stock for what seems like forever because they sell at list price. Just looking at the ones I have, I've only broken the shrink on one, JLA New Frontier, and I haven't finished it. The inconvenient size means I need certain situations to read. Looking back, I guess I really haven't picked up many of these. I'm sure I would enjoy the FF, Spider-Man, and X-Men volumes, but when I already have the content in Masterworks or other form, it's hard to justify the storage room and price tag. Marvel Cap Brubaker 1 Cap Brubaker 2 (on order) Thor Simonson Byrne FF 1 DC Hush New Frontier Sandman 1 New Teen Titans 1 |
Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
Ah, you're talking DC (and Absolutes) too. I'm actually much pickier about my Absolutes because they are generally more expensive and much harder to read, so it really has to be something that "deserves" the prestige on my bookshelf. Because of this, while I like Johns's run on Green Lantern, there's no way I'm springing for Absolute volumes. And their omnibus prices seem way too high... I have the first of Johns's Flash omnis, and that retailed for like 75 bucks for less than 450 pages... I'm not sure I'll pick up the second. In fact, I sorta regret getting the Hush Absolute, even for the deeply discounted price, mainly because I bought the 9.95 Kindle version just a few weeks before it shipped.
I'm in for: Bru Cap, whatever else they come out with Byrne FFs TMNT hardcovers Usagi Yojimbo HCs Hellboy Library Editions (despite the fur-magnet covers) Invincible Ultimate HCs Walking Dead HCs the new Savage Dragon HCs as ongoings. I would strongly consider a Peter David Hulk run (with McFarlane, Keown, and Frank). And whatever happened to the Groo collections? |
Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
Yeah, I'm lumping together hugely sized and hugely priced comic books :), and I admit I haven't studied closely the price/value differences between Marvel and DC. I did decide to not discuss the smaller stuff like the Kirby New Gods omniboo. And while I have picked up all the Invincible Ultimate HCs, I haven't gotten the huge ones.
Coincidentally, I just got notification today that my Geoff Johns Hawkman omni had shipped. I had pre-ordered it back in July at $29.92 including Gold Box discount, and when I was looking over some of my orders I saw this book was now listed at $75 so I didn't cancel it. :) And I kind of regret Hush as well. I was looking at a friend's copy a while back and was dazzled by the art, but it's never been my favorite story in the world. |
Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
Personally, while I enjoy the collections of material readily available in other formats, I'd like to see things that haven't yet been collected come out.
In addition to the Sgt. Fury stuff (well, there are 3 published Masterworks) & Kid Colt, I'd like to see some of the following long-running series from DC: Blackhawk (the Quality comics, including Military/Modern) Sea Devils Tomahawk |
Re: Marvel Omnibuses you'd like to see
Maybe I missed this one in the Official Solicits? Or are Marvel Solicits skipping over a few things? We knew it was coming at any rate. Available for order on DCBS.

More important than a new cover is that this one has a stitched binding rather than the old one's glued binding. That's pretty much a necessity for a book this size.

I don't know why they don't use this image for the omnibus cover. It's really quite perfect. Group shot by Quitely, captures the themes of Morrison's run. I see the cover they used, and wonder who the asshole with a soul-patch between Xorn and Cyclops is. |
