I'm actually amazed at how small the World War Hulk series is. Look at how few titles it crosses over with. No Spider titles, no Wolverine, and the only X book it touches is an X-Men mini series made for the crossover. The Iron Man crossover is expected as Tony had a hand in sending Hulk away. The Heroes For Hire crossover is a stretch but could be rationalized. My big "what the fuck" is for the Ghost Rider crossover.

After finishing this mini, I realize why I have dropped so many Marvel titles over the past 2 years to the point where I read only 2 of their monthly titles now - Astonishing X-Men and Captain America. I'm tired of the constant delays, and the subpar plots, and the big crossover events where you have to buy 30+ issues just to get the whole story. I do not plan to read World War Hulk now basically for that reason. I enjoyed Planet Hulk overall, but I'm incredibly tired of the constant crossover events that Marvel has had going for, what, 4 years now?
Actually I found this series so manic that I couldn't predict what was going to happen from issue to issue, only really panel to panel. For someone who wrote a post-modern Avengers in The Authority, and an Avengers team that reminds us it's not REALLY the Avengers we're reading, Millar did a really bad job with Cap and Iron Man here.

I also think it's funny you still read Astonishing X-men despite trying to avoid delays and subpar plots.

Maybe Hulk will come back and kill everyone in the world. Then Marvel can do their relaunch.

Only if it was pencilled by Fred Hembeck.

I do realize that Astonishing X-Men seems to be constantly delayed but it's actually been pretty regular as a bi-monthly title, which it has been for a while now. I have no plans to read it after Joss Whedon leaves the title, the same as I don't plan to read Captain America after Ed Brubaker leaves it.

I do agree with you about the job Millar did with Cap and Iron Man in CW, though. If you read the monthly Cap title then look at him in Civil War it's almost like looking at 2 completely different characters.

That's because in Captain America he's written like a character. In Civil War he was written like a characterization of himself.

I haven't read Captain America in a while, but I would argue that CA is very often written as a characterization of himself.

I was somewhat disappointed with the last issue of Civil War. I just didn't buy the ending. Switching gears I noticed that according to Wikipedia there were more than 100 books tied in to Civil War! That's a lot of damn books.

This week's Frontline #11 gives more of a closure to the story, as Ben & Sally interview Steve & Tony.

Wow... from this thread alone I went from wanting to order most of the Civil War collections to not ordering any that were solicited in Feb, including the Frontline books. I even skipped over the Brubaker Cap book because of the tie in. I'm still stuck with the ones I preordered from the Jan. Previews, but otherwise thanks for saving me some money...

Speaking of laughing and Civil War, if you haven't checked out Christopher Bird's rewrite of the series, it's well worth reading:

The CW rewrites are actually much more entertaining than what Mark Millar wrote. I'd love to see the author's take on DC's 52.

Tom Brevoort answered questions about CW today at newsarama.

This particular answer pretty much seals my hate for Marvels current state:

Q: To what extent do you think that this "big event that changes everything" sort of storytelling can be sustained? Readers know, on some level, that events like this are temporary. In ten years, odds are good that Nick Fury will lead S.H.I.E.L.D. and Spider-Man will have a secret identity again...

TB: ...For all that we constantly hear that readers don’t want more crossovers, they always, always turn out for them.... And when you’re talking about a timeframe of ten years, you’re really speaking of a hardcore audience—traditionally, the average reader of years past read the books for three-to-five years, and then moved on to other things. At the point where you’re worrying that everything is eventually going to go back to the classic status quo eventually, you’ve been in the mix for longer than normal.

Guess I shouldnt be surprised, but Ive been reading Marvel longer than I should? OK. I can fix that....

And if the average reader is around for 3 years, then they just spent 1/3rd of that on Civil War. Poor bastards.

Brevoort is full of shit. For years now, Marvel has tried to explain some of the darker turns of characters as "as our readers grow, our titles need to grow with them."

But hey, it's nice to know that Marvel doesn't want me as a reader, and that they don't want me to stick around.

What's funny is that, according to the spoilers in the article, someone was brought back who only readers who have been around for over a decade will even care about...
