I thought Superman said that she "thought" she was stronger than he was, but only because he had been taught restraint, and that he could stop her at any time. Of course, he didn't stop her from tackling the other Supergirl into a building one second later, so what does he know?

Also read last month's Titans, with the two Superboys. If I had known it would just be an elongated version of EXACTLY WHAT THEY SHOWED IN INFINITE CRISIS, I wonder if I would have bothered. Eh, who am I kidding, I'd buy it to complete my collection, but still... I did enjoy Nauck on the title, though they still credit Daniels on the cover. And I had NO idea they had messed up the Doom Patrol that much...

That was the best IC tie-in I read. It wasn't really exactly the same and that fight deserved to be expanded. They expanded the Superman fight with 3 tie-ins and that fight sucked in comparison. I liked what they tried to do with those 3 Superman comics, but the execution wasn't that great and the final result in IC was even worse.

1. Superman says that the solar panels in her ship exposed her to yellow rays BEFORE she got to Earth. So "maybe" this is why she's strong.

2. Superman said that he didn't have her powers whe he was her age and that he got his powers later. (I stand corrected)

3. Batman's -theory- is that Kal's upbringing is what keeps him in check. I guess this implies she has no means to keep her powers in check interms of her being destructive and powerful if she wants too.

Well, I guess I'm not most people. I thought of Captain Marvel(The Marvel one) first just find that it was spelled differently.

I like the Infinite Crisis series so far, even though I was skeptical at first...but the way the crossover is trickling down into the core titles is done VERY poorly, ALMOST as bad as anyone who was reading (or read retrospectively, the way I did) the original Crisis on Infinite Earths. Many books were totally out of synch with what was going on in the crossover, characters that supposedly died at one point showed up the next month in another comic as if nothing happened even when timelines were compared, and lastly, it took some books/characters YEARS to catch up to what happened in COIE. Many DC fans love to tout how great DC is for streamlining their continuity, when in reality, to this day, it still nearly impossible to get a clear picture of DC's history *cough*Hawkman*cough*, and furthermore, major players like Batman who were revamped *before* Crisis in terms of writing style/characterization were composed almost totally seperate than their Crisis incarnations and later, their post-Crisis incarnations for no discernable reason.

Infinite Crisis is one of those crossovers that simply, should not have happened because the timing is so off. You're either reading a book right now that you know will lead to events that you don't find particularly attractive, you're reading books that make almost no sense even IF you are reading the crossover (like the Superman books), or you're reading a book that takes place after said events take place, even though the conclusion to the story won't happen for another year or so making most of what you're reading a lead-in into a story that really only BEGINS a year from now... Just like with the Infinite Crisis Preludes, the stories are too vague to be entertaining until your'e reading them in retrospect after reading another story that hasn't even been written.

Sorry for all the negativity...just for the sake of balance, here are my positive opinions of Infinite Crisis:

Just like every other pretentious art critic out there, I like to think that art is heavily influenced by the trials faced by society. You can see this especially in comics. In the Golden Age there was an unfettered idealism, there was black and white in the morals, and the right thing was always what the heroes did, although that doesn't always mean that heroes did the right thing. In the Silver Age, that's when the comic dream's world was ripped away just as in reality, when the American Dream died and people could no longer hide behind their rose-tinted glasses. Sometimes heroes failed, but what they did was always the right thing, even if doing the right thing meant sacrificing everything they had, even what they believed in. Now in the modern age, we have an entire generation searching for meaning and trying to regain what we prized most - our ideals, lost to moral ambiguity. Are our heroes REALLY heroes when what they do, much like our leaders, to protect the common people involves lowering themselves to the very evil they proclaim to be fighting against. Furthermore, is what they're fighting really evil, and in the end, really worthwhile to fight against when it only seems to cause more innocents to get caught in the crossfire? these are the hard questions are comics are asking us now. Infinite Crisis is trying to give us a world that is strong enough to answer these questions, that can provide a hard fight against evil without any sacrifices.

That's all I got.

Exactly. I saw the B&N USM in stores and tried to calculate the per-issue price, but it's too massive. I've been picking up the hardcovers but even those are awkward to read.

Has the new Warlord come out yet? Haven't seen it and I thought it was coming in Feb.

fujishig 03-07-06 12:59 PM

I got Warlord #1 in my March shipment (for Feb titles). So yes, it's out. Now was the last issue of Infinite Crisis late, because it wasn't in my shipment, and I'm getting a little worried...

The B&N Spiderman hardcover is massive, but they were pretty much clearancing them out for months, and I jumped on it. A bit unwieldy, but cheap if you can still find it.

I have no idea if it was late or not, but it came out on 03/01. I'm guessing that would've missed a Feb title shipment.

BassDude 03-07-06 02:51 PM

Not sure if this is the thread. Plz let me know if there is another for this question.

I heard mention of a new Batman story by Frank Miller about Batman taking on terrorist. I asked at my comic store but the normal guy wasn't there and didn't know anything about it.

Anyone here heard of such a thing?

It's been kicked around a few years now, and has just recently gotten mention again. At last report, Miller was half-way done writing it. There's been no release date announced yet.

BassDude 03-07-06 03:46 PM

Thanks! Will keep my eyes/ears open. It was brought up on the Howard Stern show of all places a week or so ago.

JasonF 03-07-06 05:00 PM

I have the B&N Spider-Man book. There's no denying it's a hefty volume, but I didn't find it too big to read. Then again, I have the Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes omnibuses (omnibi?), so maybe I'm not a good judge.

Warlord #1 did come out, but it was pretty bad, IMO. I wish DC would reprint the original Mike Grell stories.

FantasticVSDoom 03-07-06 07:11 PM

Well I decided to start back into comics again by starting with the IC books. Through the first 3 issues and I didnt know what to think at first, but enjoying it now. Also picked up Green Latern, The New Avengers, Hellblazer, Batman (starting with 650, is there another issue I should start with), Runaways, Birds of Prey, The first 2 issues of the Morrison Superman book, and Astonishing Xmen. Will look to see what is coming out tommorrow. Is there no monthly Flash title anymore? Also, any buzz on the Ion book bt Marz? Looks kinda interesting imo.

Geez, I'm sorry. :(

Giantrobo 03-08-06 04:17 AM

Not a comic but Comic related and I'm sorry if it was mentioend already in this or another comic thread:

I was at Barnes & Nobles and I saw a book called <b>"Last Sons"</b> by Alan Grant. It had Superman, Martian Manhunter, and "The Main Man" Lobo on the cover so I did a blind buy. Has anyone heard of this book? Is it a novelization of a comic story?

I don't have time for no stinkin' spellchecking. :p

brianluvdvd:

I'm in the same boat. I quit collecting probably 89-90, and though I dabbled and stepped into a comic shop every now and then since then, I haven't really kept up.
A couple of the titles that I did read to catch up were Preacher and Sandman, like you.
Even now I'm not buying comics--with the average one costing 1-4 bucks, and when I can read it in like 20 minutes, it's not a hobby with a high ROI for me.
I've got a coworker who suggests titles to me and lends me books to read. I did read the first 8 or so TPBs of Ultimate Spider-Man and enjoyed that as a way to kinda 'catch up'.
I've been checking out TPBs from my county library system, turns out they have quite a few to choose from, and I can request they get sent to my local library to pick up.
I read all the JLA TPBs they had [The JL/JLA are probably my favorite group of characters].
My coworker lent me Identity Crisis to read, and yes, that was pretty powerful.
I've primarily been reading Justice League, Batman, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Superman TPBs from the library.

Are we allowed to talk about older titles in this thread, if we just read them?
I finished "Superman: Red Son" last night [what if Kal-El landed on a Soviet farm collective instead of in Smallville]. It was interesting. I l ike alternate histories, and it's cool to see the similarities and differences. Some people just have a destiny. Luthor's hyperintelligence seemed a little exaggerated, but I guess there are 'savants' like him, they're just usually working in the background somewhere. And I guess all things considered, I can suspend that little bit of disbelief :)

Although at the very end, I honestly thought that

Spoiler:
Kal-L was going to be sent to our Earth and land in Smallville, rather than be sent back in time to land in the USSR. I normally like the time travel/"All You Zombies" type stories, and while the typical time travel paradox wasn't really discussed, this ending seemed a little off somehow.
And I didn't need the big splash panel making the creation of Batman obvious, the pose and the event on the page before told me enough.

And of course the author tried to include lots of staples/anchors of the DC universe, and while it was cool to see them, and how their origins or purposes were similar/different, it seemed like they could have used some more pages to flesh them out. Or maybe that's just my wishful thinking, because I'm a fan of pretty much everyone in that book.

nny 03-08-06 10:49 AM

FantasticVSDoom, Batman 650, along with the annual, are the final 2 issues of Winick's run. For the next 4 months, Batman and Detective are doing an 8 part story that should be a good starting point. You might as well read 650 just to know what happened right before the OYL jump. Winick's run was pretty good, but I hated how he ended it.

fujishig 03-08-06 11:46 AM

dtcarson,
Have you read Justice League: the Nail? It's an Elseworlds by Alan Davis, with the premise that a single nail in the road caused a flat tire for Ma and Pa Kent, preventing them from finding baby Supes. So it's the DC universe without Supes. That's my favorite JL Elseworlds, even if the sequel wasn't as quite as good.

MBoyd 03-08-06 01:46 PM

I'm in Austin this week during Spring Break and went to check out the local comic store I go to when in town. Austin Books and Comics. Neat place, really huge, put their comics out at 9 am on Wednesday and I think they must have every DC Direct figure ever made. It takes all my powers of resistance not to buy some. If you are ever in town check this place out. I don't think I have ever seen a larger selection of graphic novels and hardcover collections.

This place seems to order so much stuff that they rarely sell out of anything even when sell-outs are announced. I thought it was interesting today that the 1st issue of Planet Hulk was still in stock, but I also found it interesting that Detective 1yr later was gone as was Batman Year 100 which I was going to pick up for a friend. Both not announced as sell outs AFAIK.

Oh and the first issue of Marvel Zombies was $35 and behind the counter. Whoa.

tonyc3742 03-08-06 06:17 PM

fujishig: No, I haven't. That sounds like one I'd like. I tried searching and I don't think my library carries that one :(

Jackskeleton 03-08-06 08:00 PM

This weeks teen titans was pretty good. Had a little of the ol' young justice and a good mix of the modern teen titans in it. One of those that you'll read before the next Crisis issue.
