Original Dark Tower Comic series by SK from Marvel
Marvel will release an original series by Stephen King based on The Dark Tower, exploring the origin of The Gunslinger. Art by Jae Lee.

I'd love to see adaptations of the novels. That series would last for years.

I guess you mean these lines in the interview.
JQ: Right – there will be more than one. After he told the stories, Robin encapsulated them all and has done her best to break them down into issue-by-issue chunks. After she’s done that, I took a pass at it and broke things down into page-by-page structure to give to Jae – something written in the Marvel style. From there, Jae and Richard Isanove will be collaborating on it to produce the look that they’re famous for when they get together. And of course Mr. King was involved each step of the way.
NRAMA: And then the final scripting?
JQ: Right now, we’re concentrating on getting the visual rendering of the story finalized. The actual scripting will be the finishing touch.
Although I routinely called bogus on authors like Tom Clancy doing that with that paperback novel series, for some reason, and maybe because it's a comic, it oesn't bother me. I will check it out.

I wonder if I'll be picking up the individual issues, or the hardcover collection for Christmas 2006. Or both, which is more likely, since I'm a King completist.
What this does though, is bring The Dark Tower more into the mainstream, and with any luck we should be seeing a live-action adaptation of the novels. My hope is for HBO to do it, as an ongoing series.

How could you possibly forgo the initial release and wait until December? April is far enough away as is.
I know it has been discussed before, but I would rather see a Final Fantasy:TSW, type CG film/tv adaptation of the dark tower. I don't think the budget this type of story would attract would do it justice. Nor can I picture any actual actors in the roles.

I can totally see The Dark Tower as an ongiong live-action HBO series. It could be a co-production, like Rome is with the BBC. Meaning more budget. And I don't want well-known actors to play these roles, so a TV show is perfect for that. Plus there are no restraints on HBO. It would rock.

The only problem with an ongoing live-action DT series is the aging of the child actors, especially when the get to Wizard and Glass. Will Jake have aged a year by the time they finish the backstory? That backstory would have to be a whole season. If you are making a long lived series, cutting anything out is silly.

No, they could film it in chunks. The actor playing Jake could film the majority of his stuff within a year, to be then cut into the series as they go.
The structure of the novels could also be altered a bit for the series. That would be the job of the screenwriters, etc., to have a more natural TV show-like flow to the seasons. They would probably only need 3 or 4 seasons to tell the whole story.

Also, I doubt any company would allow the extensive amount of shooting they would need to do for Jake. It would be much more than all the LOTR films. Especially if it was a series. It would probably be a headache too, trying to match up the footage they shot with Jake for a later date.
I completely understand why King never wants it adapted, unless it was extremely faithful, it would be a failure.

Stephen and Marvel have decided to push back the launch of the Dark Tower comic books to 2007. "Given the size of the project and all the creative talent involved, I want to give the Marvel series all the room to breathe it needs and deserves," said Stephen. "I've got so much else going on in 2006 - two novels coming out, CELL and LISEY'S STORY, and the work with John Mellencamp on 'Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.' The Marvel series is going to be a blast, and I want to have the time to enjoy it."
The 1st issue of the yet-to-be-named first arc of the Dark Tower comic series will be shipping in February 2007. The last issue of this six-issue series will be shipping in July 2007. The first hardcover collection will be shipping in October 2007.

t.v. adaptations of King's work are crap. I've seen many of them and can't name a single good one. I'd much rather see The Gunslinger on the big screen, and that's it. No sequels. Just adapt the first book (it's the only one small enough to fit into a 2 hour movie) and get tons of people interested in the books.
