Comic talk for july. CONNNNN!!!!!!!
Well it's july. Means SDCC is only two weeks away and it means that comic talk for july has begun.
Batman is brooding and untrusting Spiderman will go through EPIC LIFE TURNING EVENTS for the 100th time House of M vs Countdown to Crisis. Let the discussion begin! |
Well, you made your's first so...
Continuing what I said about Batman though, it's not that I'm surprised that Batman is a little nuts sometimes, even though that characterization really turn me away, it's that everyone seems shocked by it, and then quickly moves on. I agree that in many storylines recently Batman has been his typical distrusting self, but that everyone around him now still trusts him. I would think after the 90 millionth time someone that devious betrays you that you learn to stay away from them. It's really beginning to annoy me how naive some of these heroes are, especially since many of them have been operating for years and have experienced countless tragedies. They're either totally disassociated from their emotions - making them potentially sociopathic - or they have a very poor memory. I thought continuity was invented to keep stuff like this from happening. I'm still split on Identity Crisis. I can't say it was a bad story, but I didn't enjoy reading it. It was very emotionally manipulative at times, and I felt like there wasn't a satisfactory conclusion. I don't mean that everyone flies off into the sunset smiling, but there wasn't a real sense of closure for me. I know that in the real world not everything wraps up so neatly and so quickly...but it would have been nice for the last issue to be a long epilogue as opposed to primarily focusing on revealing all the secrets behind the story. The story X-ed over into many monthlies but even then, aside from the Teen Titans issue, there wasn't a lot of emotion from the characters. The Flash tie-in was a little too long and melodramatic for my tastes, and Wally having to deal with that kind of emotional burden shouldn't be anything new, although that probably doesn't make it any easier. |
To answer Rogue's question from the previous thread: if you just place the order for a trade, they'll charge you when it ships. If you place an entire month's order, they (well, dcbservice) charges you at the beginning of that month.

Just read X-Men: Phoenix - Endsong. Did anyone else read this when it came out? I enjoyed it for the most part. It felt right. Sure, we don't really need another Jean Grey back from the dead story, but I liked the way this one was handled. And I'll enjoy Land's art any day (even though he draws heads too big and not always centered).
|
I was a bit bummed to see at the end of OMAC issue 3 that I would need to read 4 different comics
Spoiler:
|
I thought DC stated you didn't need to read anything else to get enjoyment from the Invinite Crisis minis. Lame!

I'm such an old man. House of M? Countdown to Crisis? It all looks like crap to me. Right now, I'm working my way through a backlog of Marvel Essentials and loving it. Hulk smash! The fight against Absorbing Man from #125 is one of the first comics I ever read and it's reprinted in Essential Hulk #3. Fantastic Four #83 and the fight against the Enclave where Him (later Adam Warlock) were introduced (other early stories in my reading experience) -- those are in Essential FF #4, which is next on the reading list.

Are you serious? Awe maaaan. I just picked up OMAC 3. :( While I'm ok with these over the top universe changing events, like you I hate buying books I normally don't jsut to keep up. |
Is anyone reading the "Albion" mini by Alan Moore and others? I picked up the 1st issue the other day.
http://dccomics.com/features/albion/ |
I got the first issue of Albion, and thought it was just OK. Mostly setup, and kind of hard to follow in some points. These are such obscure (to the U.S.) characters they're bringing back that it could've used a little more explanation. Not sure yet if I'll pick up #2 or not.
(Alan Moore only did the plot and his daughter and another guy did the writing, so it's definitely not like Moore's best work.) |

I'm glad I haven't started collecting the Infinite Crisis tie-ins. From what i'd heard most issues were just a waste of space and everything was still being kept very vague. |

I'm glad I haven't started collecting the Infinite Crisis tie-ins. From what i'd heard most issues were just a waste of space and everything was still being kept very vague. I was thinking today about all the uber crossovers from the past and I realized that I haven't been satisfied with a single one. I loved the concept of a bunch (especially No Man's Land) but the books usually vary so much in style and content that I ultimately come away feeling let down. In fact about No Man's Land, I think that whole thing works so much better in the novelization. Everything was streamlined and it was easy to see how things went from point a, to b, and finally c which I think comes from having one author. Makes me anxious to read the Crisis of Infinite Earths novel. On this same topic I found the Death of Superman novel worked really well for the same reasons. Has anyone here read Fade From Blue? I just started this and it's rocking my socks off. Great art, cool story, and really fun characters. |
I just finished The Maxx volume 1, and I'm starting on The Maxx volume 2. I'm err, kinda selective about what I read. And I don't often read new stuff because I prefer to wait until it comes out in a trade paperback.

So I'm still a month behind, but just finished reading the Ultra graphic novel by the Luna bros., and I enjoyed it. Is that an ongoing series now? Also, for some reason I've always been fascinated with DC's Who's Who, so I've been picking up some of the pamphlet Marvel Handbooks to catch up on the characters I haven't been following monthly. Just finished reading "Teams, 2005" and it makes me wonder who picked these teams and why? Are they all related to some book that's already out, or is soon to come out? Otherwise why have entries for stuff like the "All Winners Squad"? If you're going to do that, why not have "Rom and the Spaceknights" and stuff like that? And man those things are expensive for how thin they are... So a new Previews is out... anything new or out of the ordinary that people can recommend from the new volume? |
I usually use the comments/feedback at thefourthrail.com to uncover stuff that might be below my rader in Previews, as I don't get to an actual comic shop much anymore (about once a month or so). They should post the Sept stuff soon.

IIRC, that Previews has a new printing of Squadron Supreme. I never seem to find a good used copy, so I'm certainly happy to see a listing for it.
|
Just read Street Angel vol 1 which was ok. Also read Invincible 20 to 22 which is great. I have the TPB on order. The OMAC pissed me off also with that crappy buy these books to keep up. I'm thinking of dropping all this crisis crap. Though I did like OMAC and a few of the others.
Oh I read Gotham Central vol 1 also which wasn't all that good. |

So a new Previews is out... anything new or out of the ordinary that people can recommend from the new volume? Here is a quick rundown of the stuff that EVERYONE should check out . . . The Goon: Fancy Pants Edition HC - One of my two favorite comics being published & the most pure masterpiece of an original comic being published today. There is nothing I like more than a good hardcover & this sure looks to be one. The first Gon hardcover collectin the life of the Goon in chronilogical order with loads of extras. I cannot recommmend this comic enough. Frank Miller's Sin City Library HC - A little pricey but well worth it IMO. All the Sin City books in an oversized hardcover format with a slipcase. no way can any true Miller fan pass this up. Conan vol. 2: The God in the Bowl & Other Stories TPB - The 2nd trade from maybe the greatest Conan run of all-time by Busiek & Nord. Crisis on Infinite Earths: The Absolute Edition HC - I'm pretty sure I'm the only person here that gets these, but they are SO worth it. This is a must own for me. Seven Soldiers: Mister Miracle #1 - I'm not going to list all the single issues comics worth buying, b/c there are too many of them. But this is just a reminder. Seven Soldiers has been brilliant so far & with Pasqual Ferry art, this looks to be maybe the most interesting of all the SS mini-series. Ex Machina: Vol. 1: Tag TP - Another of rare true masterpieces being published right now. Collectin issues 6-10 of this brilliant series. Sleeper Book 4: The Long Way Home - When this was out, it was my favorite comic on the stands. With this, you can now own the complete Brubaker masterpiece all in TPB format. If you never read it before, wait for this & read it all at once, you are in for one hell of a ride. FEll #1 - Warren Ellis & Ben Templesmith on an on-going series, that should be enough to get anyone to buy this. The preview pages look amazing, my only fear is that we will see 2 issues a year. Invincible. Vol. 5: The Facts of Life TPB - The best superhero comic being published today. Bigfoot TPB - The single issues sold out incredibly fast. This was an awesome mini-series by Rob Zombie & the always mind-blowing Richard Corben that was a sort of realistic take on the legendary monster. Atomika - Vol. 1 TP - Pretty cool new series about an alternate past where the Revolution has become the State & gods now walk the earth. Atomika is the first man made god, its a pretty good read. I'm probably forgetting a lot of stuff, but those are the must haves. |

I still have the Squadron Supreme GN with the Alex Ross cover. What does the new one look like? Last month's comics should come later this week, so I guess I'll be able to take a look at Previews then. |
Here's the missing page:
http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/images/...RITAIN0405.jpg Poking around on the internet reveals that this is just a new printing of the TPB that originally came out a few years ago (albeit with the missing page restored to the story). I wonder if they got Alan Moore's copyright correct this time? |

DC has a sweet coffee table Encyclopedia out in the bookstores that I've been meaning to pick up. A long time ago my buddy would give me all his old Marvel Universe Handbooks and I loved them. I especially loved the ones with all the Dead heroes a villians. |

"OCTOBER IS GOON MONTH @ DARK HORSE Press Release Special signed hardcover, 25-cent issue, and monthly Previews comic strip keep Zombietown residents happy. Dark Horse is making October 2005 official “Goon” month, and kicking it off is the release of the hardcover title Fancy Pants. This volume collects the essential stories of the Eisner-Award winning Goon, presenting his life in chronological order for the first time—along with a boxcar-load of extras—all in a handsomely designed (and handsomely priced) signed hardcover. Chronicling the histories of the Zombie Priest, Buzzard, Labrazio, and of course, Goon and Franky, this collection is the perfect introduction to the entire Goon mythos. Eric Powell personally arranged the stories (spanning three publishers and nearly ten years) so that the life of the Goon could be read as one complete story. This hardcover is a must-have for every serious fan of the Goon, containing a comprehensive cover gallery and a three-page, never-before-seen Buzzard story. What’s more, every volume is signed by Powell himself. Buying this book should be like dodging a brick—a no-brainer! “Much like the Godfather saga, we’ve taken the essential Goon stories and put them together for the first time in a linear timeline,” commented Goonfather Eric Powell. “This is an excellent primer for the material that is to come.” And if the signed hardcover isn’t enough to satisfy your zombie-bashing appetite, Dark Horse is proud to present the original The Goon #1 in a new 25-cent edition that includes a brand-new short story and painted cover by none other than the illustrious Mr. Powell himself. Additionally, a monthly Goon comic strip will appear in the Dark Horse section of the Diamond Previews catalog. This strip will feature an ongoing all-new Goon tale in each installment. Over the last few years, The Goon has earned both critical and popular acclaim with its tales of a lone thug and his fight against a never-ending onslaught of zombies, giant lizards, and killer robots. For one measly quarter, see why Entertainment Weekly put The Goon on their “Must” list and why Ain’t It Cool News said, “The Goon is a wild ride filled with imagination, intrigue, horror, and laughs.” You know you want to. The Goon: Fancy Pants hardcover is a direct market exclusive that arrives October 13 with a retail price of $24.95. The Goon 25-cent comic arrives October 13. The Goon monthly comic strip begins in the Dark Horse section of the October Diamond Previews catalog. " http://images.darkhorse.com/covers/12/12464.jpg |

The last panel of JLA Classified #9 (I think that's the number?) certainly has an interesting tone to it. Ironic? F-U to DC?
As for the trades, I thought I would stop with Squadron Supreme. I didn't look well enough to see Conan and Ex-Machina. It'll be an expensive month. :D |
You just convinced me. I've added the Goon HC to my order.

Really thought The GOON HC would be 50% off at DCBS this month...at least the Sin City HCs are on sale :) However, I don't think the Sin City HC set has ALL the released Sin City stories, I think its just four of the arcs (Sin City, Dame to Kill for, Big Fat Kill, and Yellow Bastard). As for the Goon HC, what issues does this reprint or how many pages is it?

DCBS is so evil. I start ordering to save money, then I end up buying all these hardcovers!
